Waterloo rip-off. Hehehe. Tonight we're gonna party like it's 1974.

forre

Portugal can't sing even if they are trying so hard with their "Waterloo". Byeee :bye:

Anouk
18-05-2006, 21:26
Exactly what I was thinking.. I'm sure they had a better chance of succeeding if they just ripped all of Waterloo..

robbie
18-05-2006, 21:27
Portugal is like ABBA vs. Spice girls after reactivation :p

Rachel
18-05-2006, 21:27

Sweden's got the best song so far. They should get top 3 at least.

Anouk
18-05-2006, 21:30
Sweden's the best so far.. But it was easy to beat everyone else that was on earlier tonight, but Kate Ryan..

Ah well, they won't win anyway :p

Have you seen anyone better tonight? I sure haven't.. Ok, maybe Kate Ryan, but I had heard that song before..

Sweden is through, like it or not.

Well, in that case.. That much cockiness should be cooled with a bucket of icewater.. Down with Sweden!! :p j/k

freddie
18-05-2006, 21:32

Estonia should be through also

forre

Yep and the singer is Swedish.

Estonia should be through. It's neutral and the performance is confident.

18-05-2006, 21:35
Props to Estonia for finding a young version of Agnetha.. Down to the outfit..

So many ABBA references this year

Rachel
18-05-2006, 21:36

God help Iceland. LOL

Anouk
18-05-2006, 21:41
LMAO.. Everybody's booing Iceland

I heard the Dutch voice over say she's a spoiled bitch? Ah well, she deserves to lose royally then  Not to mention - the song is almost as crappy as Lithuania's

spyretto
18-05-2006, 21:42

Maybe Estonia can make it too. Hopefully Belgium though the performance was too weak.

Dutch people are such hypocrites.. They voted Treble to win the National finals with like 75% of the votes, leaving the other 2 finalists with 25%.. And then they all voted that Treble wasn't going to amount into anything at Eurovision.. I don't care for the national finals and stuff, but that just seemed stupid to me.. Why vote for someone you don't feel confident about anyway

BTW - that Sakis guy annoys me

Or maybe that Eastern Europe STILL got the upper hand in voting? Look at the demographics of the countries through.
It's obvious this year that some really undeserving songs went through, which means that we should be start thinking about an Eastern European winner again...Romania perhaps?

Anyway, the semi was pretty crappy indeed..needless to say...with an appropriate ending

That's what I've been thinking for the past few years, that the Eastern Europeans are taking over Eurovision.. I think it won't be long before at least Holland calls it quits - the tv station that's been broadcasting Eurovision ever since the very beginning doesn't even want to host it anymore.. Maybe another commercial tv station will take over, but whatever.. I don't think it'll work anymore for us westerners :p

I wanted Kate Ryan :( And the cute short haired dancer chick from Slovenia

spyretto
18-05-2006, 22:33

Bulgaria and Slovenia are still outsiders with no pedigree, both need to do more ass-kissing to go through next year.
Though Bulgaria was nice. They just need to find a more suitable ESC song.

Having said that, I'm watching Slovenia again and it was an OK performance with a ESC type of song so my verdict is that his beard is to blame.

More likely the fact he's only 19 and that hairy. It had to take some hormonal therapy to get him to this stage.

I'm actually more sad for Bulgaria, though.

i'm actually glad that Lithuania got through... but i'm a newcomer to the contest but as we (a group of people with no real ties to any country, or can understand neighboorly voting) liked Lithuania the best, it stood out and had a fun, light hearted nature and seemed to be performed well. We also liked Monaco (even though she was flat most of the time) and Bosnia. Most of the people here had never heard of the contest until yesterday... but yeah.

Well, I'm sure there are fans of the Lithuanian song, otherwise who else would have voted it through. Lithuania
never made it to the final before while the other Baltic counties are both recent winners so..well I don't know... :p

I think he was just being sarcastic. OF COURSE there's neigbourhood voting, come on. :p ... it's a very accepted (and obvious) fact.

I think Lithuania came through simply on the symphaty vote, though. People thought "awww... look at these poor deluded people... let's vote for them so their utopia will last till saturday at least." If they win on Saturday though... I'mma shoot myself. :p

hey that was not a wonderful show but it works i think.the performances were weak as they all countries can do just better.as for the results im happy that we could get to the final!Sibel's performance was weak at times but ahow was good.its not her best.the results im not happ about are lithuania, armenia and ireland get to the final.the performancesof those countries, especially that armenian guy that couldnt get the breath to sing some parts and lithuanian guys that couldnt add anything for fun, fifnt deserve to make it at all and sıhould be replaced by Belgium,Slovenia(even though i dislike the song) and Estonia

p.s:thank you rachel for capping sibel's performance.you rock!

im not that crazy about eurovision but this year is specal for me that its the first contest i can feel the improvements of songs and listen them all before the shows.

"Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" LMAO
Silly Greeks. It's not silly. :D The Slavic people who live in that country are basically Bulgarians, they have nothing to do with the genuine Hellenic Macedonians, they have no rights on the name. Why not rename the country West Bulgaria? Or better yet, merge with Bulgaria altogether. :D

LOL @ Lithuania…I'm taking that as a not so subtle "fuck-off" to the show itself, and i can appreciate the humor in that. Something Tatu didn't dare to do 3 years ago.

Poor KateOh well, it's better for her to go back to what she does best, dance music. The good news is that she's releasing a new album in September, yay! :D We'll talk about it in the Begian Dance Music thread.

Goodness. You'd get slaughtered for saying that in Skopje. :p That's like saying merge Belarus with Russia. Ain't gonna happen. And yeah sure... Macedonia was hellenic in the genuine sense of the word. But it's not really a trade-mark if you know what I mean. That part of the region was always named Macedonia (or at least a part of the original hellenic Macedonia) and it just so happens it's currently being run by slavics who call themselves Macedonians and identify as such. It'd be asking much of them to start calling themselves Bulgarians all of a sudden. That's like asking Spaniards, Italians and French to call themselves former citizens of the Roman Republic. :p

Anywayz... my hot pick for saturday is still Finland followed by France (though their chances are limited considering they don't sing in English).

took a while to dl but i just watched it once (will re-watch later, gotta run out now), but first impressions:
ok, at least she looked good, the dancers looked good... Azis and the other guy didnt look that good on that stage, but Azis was SO background, I am not used to seeing him like that... and so little drag for him!
Also, at least MAriana can sing, just too bad it wasnt an eurovision song... i cant comment on whether it shouldve qualified or not, as i have only seen this and Turky;s performances...
btw, i cant watch anything from the official site on a mac... it was not the case last year,... any other fellow Mac user streaming the show?

Haha, well, the guy was basically saying that the singer reminded him a bit of Tina Arena, and then the girl said she liked the backup singer, and then the guy replied that he looked like the supermodel Satia (http://lesrobinsdesbois.free.fr/gfx/stars/saita.jpg), only after eating a bit too much, which made the girl laugh. :)

They can call themselves Slavo-Macedonians, that's what they are, aren't they? you said before 'that wouldn't be fair to the Albanian minority or whatever; I say it's perfectly fine. A nation of Slavs who occupy a small part of what used to be territory of the Ancient Macedonian kingdom.
So you have just admitted yourself that we do have a case about the name here, didn't you? - depite the 'siliness' :p
Actually they were on the brink of being recognised as Slavic Macedonia in the early 90s and they would be if we stupid Greeks weren't so cocky in our demand to lose the name Macedonia completely. At the end we got a worse deal than what we were bargaining for.

As for the name nowadays, I can see no siliness in calling them 'Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia'as which is the officially recognised name in the whole of the EU, and that is what they were called in the ESC last year in Ukraine, and the year before, can go back and check.

As for the history, and to set the record straight, only a small region of what it is proclaimed now as Republic of Macedonia used to be part of the ancient Macedonian empire - the rest of it - before the expansionism under Alexander the Great - laid in what is now modern Greece; I've been to the ruins of the capital Pella -not far from my home town in fact - and seen the tomb of Philip II, son of Alexander, discovered by the late Manolis Andronicos. What were the Macedonians? There was a debate during the hellenic and hellenistic times as to whether they were Greeks or not; maybe they weren't Greeks at all. Athenians for sure didn't recognise them as Greeks; however the fact remains that they spoke a Greek dialect, had strong ties with many of the Greek city states, their culture was very much Greek-oriented, their kings proclaimed themselves Greek Macedons; and Alexander the Great in particular went to great lengths to prove his Greek heritage.

haku, darling, thank you very much! :rose:

took a while to dl but i just watched it once (will re-watch later, gotta run out now), but first impressions:
ok, at least she looked good, the dancers looked good... Azis and the other guy didnt look that good on that stage, but Azis was SO background, I am not used to seeing him like that... and so little drag for him!
Also, at least MAriana can sing, just too bad it wasnt an eurovision song... i cant comment on whether it shouldve qualified or not, as i have only seen this and Turky;s performances...
btw, i cant watch anything from the official site on a mac... it was not the case last year,... any other fellow Mac user streaming the show?

haku, I am actually more interested to know what the french commentators were saying at the end... with that cute laugh lol
oh and it also shows you how UNPOPULAR we are when it comoes to europe... even Armenia surpasses us :dead: and speechless!

The bottom line is that to see Bulgaria qualify would be good, to see Belgium qualify would be even better but watching Lithuania being booed by the spectators for making it to the final was indeed priceless.
Finally, this year should be a wake-up call to change the voting system. I propose that each country should not be allowed to vote for a) any neighbouring country b) any country where people speak the same language. Only then would we see a fair contest :p

some comments about the final rehearsals

As for the performance, the only ones worth talking about are;
NORWAY : Strong prformance. Very good reaction.
MALTA : Fabrizion has thankfully shaved:D and moves much better. Change the bad haircut.
GERMANY : Better than before but not he big hit in the arena which I expected.
RUSSIA : I now think that this could win. Top 3 at worst.
ROMANIA : 100 times better than earlier. A HUGE reaction in the crowd. Grece will give this 12.
BOSNIA : Another huge reaction.
GREECE : I'm afraid this wasn't better than before. Anna's head movement are not as distracting, but it was poor vocally and she still looks like one Little Bo Peep gone wrong.
FINLAND : Power but very static.
FRANCE : Better than before, but it will still struggle not to be last.
CROATIA : Good, but not getting the reaction in the arena, that I hoped it would get. ot a winner I'm afraid.
IRELAND : Same as before, and Top 10 is the best we can hope for.
SWEDEN : A VERY shakey performance by Carola, who is missing her cues and was holding back vocally. It's like herself and Anna Vissi are shadow-boxing.
TURKEY : Great performance and a surprise candidate for the Top 5

I am not a fan of Eurovision but I think the UK entry is far worse than usual.

I quite like Lordi though :D .

spyretto
20-05-2006, 03:08
Hopefully the UK will flop. I expect Greece to flop as well. People who saw the final rehearsal are reporting that Vissi's performance was weak and as she has no supporting cast on stage - no backing singers or dancers - it all depends on her mood on the night but it's certainly not good at the moment. Even the most optimistic of Greeks think this won't live up to the hype.

Anyway, as long as the UK and Greece flop below the top 5 I'm happy.

As for Lordi, there's a conspiracy orchestrated by metal fans who never watched Eurovision before to get them as high in the rankings as possible. Expect the UK to be giving a lot of points to them.
Greeks like Sweden, Bosnia/Herzegovina and Romania and will be voting for them. Lordi will get points too.
There are some other wild cards in the contest, namely Norway and Russia, though a surprise might come from the lower regions too.
I personally liked the Ukrainian "Shakira" Tina Karol; she's cute, energetic and got a powerful voice, great falsetto towards the end of the song as well; dancing's good too.

I'm not gonna be voting but this will be my only bet for the night...so good luck to me

Finland
Russia
Romania
Greece
Bosnia
Sweden
Croatia
Ukraine
Turkey
UK

ok , here's my definite top 8

1. Sweden
2. Finland :p
3. Romania
4. Bosnia
5. Russia
6. Ukraine
7. Croatia
8. Germany

if I was forced to include a number 9, I'd say Turkey; though the performance was a little weak considering and Sibel looks a bit weird herself; perhaps they should have opted for a different presentation. Probably Norway for #10.

So its Nordic heaven vs hell battling out for my top spot; though I tipped Romania to win because a) it's probably the only song we will hear again after the competition is over b) they'll get a lot of neighbouring votes as they're consistenty getting good positions in the last few years c) haven't heard of a single person who didn't like it so far d) a male solo performer hasn't won the contest in ages.

On thursday I was sat on the steps in Syntagma Square when I heard some Russian voices, then I spotted the Eurovision bags and ID's and the Dima Tshirt. Rachel
20-05-2006, 21:41

spyretto

freddie
20-05-2006, 21:44
Ethno throwback from Armenia... hmmm... it's definitely catchy. He seems like a less goodlooking Tarkan. :p

Argos
20-05-2006, 21:45

spyretto
20-05-2006, 21:47

coolasfcuk
20-05-2006, 21:48
the last song HURTS LoL

my vote goes to Romania... i really cant pick anyone else... ummm... this was so bad!
i enjoyed Croatia.. and kind of enjoyed Russia and Turkey.... i think that's about it... oh and greece was kind of OK....this year was def a lot less chalga... .maybe the ethno is finally dying....

So, go Romaniaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.. if BG doesnt give 12 points to Romania i will kick thier butts!

muaaaaaaah nana... lol... she is great looking..i dig the glassses!... what language, honey?

Argos
20-05-2006, 21:52
Romania was very good, Bosnia had a great song. but not the most appealing singer, Vissi from Greece was a perfect performer with a song, which may not be the best, but I pray fpr LORDIIII!

The rest, forget it!

spyretto
20-05-2006, 21:53
Romania for me also...song's nothing special but the performance was great. Plus I have my money on that boy.

20-05-2006, 22:00
ok, commenting on the re-cap

from the top 9 only Norway gets a point for being hot and Spain for the cute 'Muchas Gracias' at the end lol
Russia gets 7 points
Macedonia gets 4.5
Romania 12 points
Bosnia 5
Greece 6 - i am not a ballad person, but this performance i liked
Croatia 10 just because i like the Balkan song.. and the chalga dance
Turkey .. oh god, 8.. because its stuck on me

so really, if i judge by that, my voting would be, notice not who i think would win, (i wanna see if i am as close to the bulgarian vote like last year):

Romania: 12
Croatia: 10
Turkey: 8
Russia: 7
Greece: 6
Bosnia: 5
Macedonia: 4
Spain: 4
Norway: 3

sorry, i cant even fill all the spots LoL
All the rest get somewhere between 0 and -10 points!

Is this Elena on the stage... that was bad LoL

spyretto
20-05-2006, 22:07
yeah, same for me, I'd only replace Germany with Greece - because it was a great performance and reshuffle the places a bit.

So:

Romania 12
Sweden 10
Finland 8
Bosnia 7
Russia 6
Croatia 5
Ukraine 4
Norway 3
Greece 2
Turkey 1

forre

I just watched the scoring for a little bit.. What a f*cking disgrace that Lithuania still got that many votes.. I'm appalled

Dutch votes up now.. I wonder who got 12 points.. Turkey?! But ofcourse, what else is new  Almost half our population is Turkish.. We could just aswell change our countries' name from the Netherlands to New Instanbul or something

Paul de Leeuw embarrased me as a Dutch person

spyretto
20-05-2006, 22:37
That was Paul de Leeuw? well, even Sakis made a joke out of him which doesn't speak much of the guy.

France is on the nil pois :(

Menouros brings such an American flavour to the show..."amazing" :bum:

freddie
20-05-2006, 22:37
Eastern Slavic commeradery strikes once more. Ukraine 12 to Russia... however Russia doesn't return the favour. Odd. There must be a huge Armenian diaspora in Russia.

UK 10 to Lithuania?! Jesus Christ. :p

Who is Paul anyway, some gay comedy reject? Don't even know the dude, he seemed a bit high and drunk at the same time, delaying the voting with his stupidity and that's what the whole of Europe saw.

At least we all know Sakis is a dumbass, don't even have to try, it comes naturally to him. Paul tried too much to prove exactly the same.

Anouk
20-05-2006, 22:53
Reject? Are you serious? Not even hardly.. He's has his own shows for decades.. He's a very well respected, happy go lucky guy and he's fucking halirious.. His show rocks!! If he was American, he would've been on Saturday Night Live for sure, just to give you an comparision.. He's also very straight forward - maybe that's something other Europeans aren't used to

Ofcourse you wouldn't know him, or do you watch Dutch television?!
