Unexplainable Star-Wars Hysteria

I almost feel bad for not liking the Star Wars series as much as the majority of people. With all the pomp surrounding it, all the people telling me about it all excited and enthusiastic, I still remain the one who just.. doesn't get it. Don't get me wrong - there's nothing bad about the series. First time I saw one of Star Wars movies was in 1991 (Empire Strikes Back, I believe) and I remember thinking then: "Hey, that's a damn good B-movie Sci-Fi thingie!" I wasn't even aware of the cult behind it. But now seeing people on CNN spending $50.000 on Star Wars memorabilia, I'm kind of speachless. I don't get it. What IS it about this series? The stereotype battle between good and evil? Cute furry animals? Rat-like Yoda the Buddhist monk ripp-off? Rober Redford? Kitch golden android? Home-appliance like robot?

Though I did thoughly enjoy Space Balls, the 1987 Mel Brooks parody of Star Wars. That was freaking hillarious. John Candy as a part man, part dog creature (a mog!) called Barfolemew 'Barf', Rick Moranis as the evil Dark Helmet and Mel Brooks himself as the great Yogurt. Ahhh, there's nothing sweeter then a good Mel Brooks parody. I miss those. *whistles the lead tune to Men In Tights*

A bit of trivia: Frank Oz, the voice of Yoda was also on The Muppet Show and gave life to such characters as Miss Piggy and Fozzie Bear (the later was even named after him). *bows in respect*

But anyway... as far as I'm concerned American Graffiti is still the best work George Lucas ever made. And I have a sneaking suspicion he'd agree.

Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Im definitely with you freds - never really got the big hysteria. I have seen all the episodes (excluding the one that just opene), but it is just an ok movie. Maybe it was a brilliant PR work at the time that hyped up the people ... and then they really well PRed it decades later and kind of 'sucked in' the new generation of sci-fi lovers... there is definitely a group of people who go crazy for sci-fi, but I was never one of those so I cant really comment on their obsessions

woo, and i thought i was the only "weirdo" who didn't like star wars! i've watched episode 1, i guess, and i thought it was an ok movie for a night at the cinema, but no more. i dont get what the big fuss is about

Haku, why dont you tell us all why do you love Star Wars? what's so special about it? maybe then we'll get a picture as to why there's this whole cult around it. i mean, lets say it's understandable why it was a hit in the 70's (special effects and uh... yeah), but why is the mass hysteria still continuing?

To me Star Wars was fun, mythological and inspiring... when i was little and in the hospital Star Wars meant a lot to me, and stuff... it's really something i've noticed that you either "Get it" or "You Don't" ... i've never met anyone with a grey view of it, it's so black and white of liking it or loving it. And well, i love it and i always have. There's just something about it's Epicness, drama... it's classical and you'll find that George Lucas had studied mythology and borrows alot from other peoples studies of the field....

And Ewa, i'm sorry you find us so boring (jk) ...

But i'm not a crazy fanatic, you'll have to talk to my older brother for that or my friend Jeff (haha) or maybe Haku ( maybe he has a Boba Fett costume in his closet )

Because i'm old and boring.

For me Star Wars is Sci-Fi meets classical mythology, that's brilliant. I'm a Sci-Fi geek anyway, i also like Star Trek (TNG and DS9 mainly, but i've seen all 5 series, over 600 episodes), my fave show now is the new BattleStar Galactica (those new Cylons kick ass), and my holly book is Frank Herbert's exalogy Dune.

so, the fact that you like science fiction stuff explains why you like Star Wars. you know, i've met some people that were mad about sci-fi and all two of them (three, including you) loved Star Wars. so, if you're not into the sci-fi genre, guess you can't understand the star wars mania...

Actually the old star Wars trilogy and especially the old Star Trek series are very watchable affairs . Everything they made afterwards sucks, especially when people with animal faces are involved. I'm not someone who'd revel in all things old, it's just the truth and nothing but the truth.

Well, the current Star Wars hysteria ( it broke the record of gross earnings in a day in the U.S. ) is yet another unexplainable thing among the many other unexplainable things in the showbusiness. Like this year's winner of the ESC, for example...or Britney Spears.

I don't really understand how one can not like Star Wars. But then again it was a big part of my childhood. I remember getting a star wars figurine for not biting my nails any longer.
My mother doesn't like the movies though. Think it was chewbacca that turned her off big time, and when the movie was showing every once in a while she would go "oooooooo" or whatever the sound he makes sounds like. Which is really annoying when trying to watch the movie.
My dad enjoys the movies just as much as my brother and I.
Guess I like it because it's such a classic. I guess if I had seen the movies now for the first time I wouldn't enjoy them as much. None of my friends seem to like it though, which is a puzzle to me. Wonder if it's because they watched the special edition versions as their first view and therefor expected more?
