Holy crap!
I turn my computer off everyday... before I go to bed.
If I had it on any longer, it would probably explode

As I said ....you are not alone
I'm like old grandma who never get peace before switched off the telly , the lights and check how properly the door was locked before she goes to bed. I don't really know myself why I switch it off everyday ...i never check if my door is locked though.... but the comp should be shut down. Just so

I think people who know next to nothing about computers and such things( or simply dumb as me ) are more likely to switch it off every day ..

Sometimes I actually go downstairs to check if the door is locked, even though I know my mother locked it. I'm just like that - when it comes to everything. I can set my alarm clock at night and I will still check it three times before I decide to actually put my head on the pillow, just to make sure I actually set it.

I usually have my room locked and every 10 minutes I check if the key is turned the way it is when it's locked. I'm just weird.

I don't get that. I mean, it doesn't take any knowledge just not to press the off button. It would drive me insane if I had to turn my comp off! It's great my comp being ready for me when I wake up LOL

I did the same thing ! It's only happens to me when i'm under some sort of stress or great worry ....Actually it's pretty normal , it always happens to people who under the stress and cannot control the situation so they try to control anything else(checking the gas cooker 5 times before they leave home , touching the alarm clock's button 4 times to make sure) ...even they know it's okey and set but people need that kind of reassurance...

See you know that NOTHING actually happens if you leave overnight......dumb people would think the other way -- it could catch the fire , explode , brake from being on too long time and lots of other rubbish my granny would probably add something about radiation as well

It's actually safer to leave it on. Hard drives don't like constant temperature change - they prefer one constant temperature. So by leaving it on your hard drive will probably last longer.

Weird, because I do it even when I'm not under any stress at all... just to be perfectly sure. I guess I lack control in life.

LOL I ALWAYS think that! I even turn my TV off "correctly" - not just turning it off by the remote control, but actually pressing the button on the TV... Same with the computer! 'cause I'm always thinking it will explode during the night and my house will burn down. One of my biggest fears is that I'll lose everything I own in a fire and that I get burns all over my body.

robbie, I can't copy the files at all, because the laptop won't even start. It says that a file is missing, and I need to re-install it, which is the reason to why I am installing Windows again.

Looks like my files are gonna go bye-bye

It cannot explode, as it's not high enough voltage. The PSU (electricity-box-thingie in the computer) reduces it to 12 volts. And if the PSU starts making sparks it'll turn off, cause there would be an error on electricity source to the computer. Usually every part of the computer that produces an dangerous amount of heat will turn itself off. The cpu for instance (at least Intel) will auto-shutdown for 20 seconds (I think) if it over-heated. And it will clock down before trying to start again. I'm not reeaaally sure about this detail, but I'm pretty sure the new cpu's from Intel does this. And all other things SHOULD shut down if really hot and starting to melt. That thing in your computer that started to melt a little while ago must've been something really bad. Hehehe. I guess errors can happen, nothing is perfect...

My computer is online 24/7. When it gets really slow I give a little restart or let it stay off for one night before it's back on track again. Hehe. It's always like this and nothing bad has happened. I've even left the cabinet open, so sparks could have been flying down on the carpet if so could actually happen, but it can't and won't ... so really, computers aren't that big of a danger when coming to fire and such. There a muuuch bigger chance that malfunctioning wires and plugs in the wall are the problem, and honestly, that's not the computer's fault

Last year my computer would shut down at random times for a while until I realized it was overheating because the fan had been broken for quite some time.

i always turn off my computer when leaving it. I do the same with the computer at work. No way I'm letting it stay turned on when it could save power by being turned off - AND it's less noisy
