[Confused] Bigger avatars?

Is it possible to have avatars bigger than 45 x 45 pixels?
Because on the "Edit Avatar" page it says:

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 45 by 45 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).

So, does this mean that if I use an avatar bigger than 45 x 45 pixels, but which is under/exactly 19.5 kb, it's okay? Or have I confused everything?

well, if you'd rely on what it says, than it should really be possible to have higher res avatars, but it actually doesn't work in reality, so i guess that "whichever is smaller" stuff is incorrect
