QueenBee,no dont worry about the files, there are so many ways that you can access your files. If a file is missing you can repair it.as you are installing you can choose the repair option.

She needed to boot from her OS CD-ROM then reinstall windows on top of the current version. That would fix the problem without losing any files. I also do what robbie says, I copy my windows directory including all the hidden files ( but excluding my program files folder cause it won't be affected anyway ) so if I run into trouble I can always delete the windows folder and copy and paste everything again. That will save you a lot of hassle from having to format the c: directory. But to be able to do that you need to have another version of windows otherwise it won't allow you to move or delete the wndows folders ( like system32 )
Another option to copy files and move or delete windows directories is through DOS.

I'm about to "build" a new computer, do you think I should stick with Pentium 4 or should I opt for Athlon 64? I don't know much about these things...

Athlon 64 is cheaper than Pentium 4, for sure. But then you have the heat-factor. AMD usually produce more heat than Intel + they don't really handle heat as good as Intel either. Buuuut things might've changed with the new 64 CPUs. I guess you won't be able to get hold of Windows XP64, but when the new Windows (if you use Windows that is. I'm assuming you do) is released you should be able to make even more use out of your 64bit processor, so yeah, go for AMD. Hehe. I think I'll go for AMD when I'm building my new computer when the summer is over ... we'll see

Pentium 4s are more useful as radiators than processors. Seriously though, Pentiums are history now, you better go for Intel Core and soon Intel Core 2 processors (unless you prefer AMD of course). The Intel Core family is much more efficient and powerful (and much cooler) than Pentiums.

Well there you go. I haven't updated myself on the issue since I built this computer, which is a couple of years ago. I won't dig into it before I'll build my new one, so yeah ... hehehe. I'm really not the one to ask. Anyways, I'm guessing Intel Core have the same prices as Pentiums used to have? Intel aren't known to have low prices on new products. Hehehe. AMDs however are a bit easier on the wallet.

Thanks...yeah, after some consideration I'm gonna opt for the Athlon as I've heard good things from several people - including you.
So what can I do more with this 64bit processor that I couldn't do with a 32bit? Excuse my ignorance here.
Oh and about the heating problem, would a more expensive heatsink/fan make any difference or are all the same and it all depends on the processor? thanks in advance.

As for the Intel core family, they're a bit higher than my budget at the moment but maybe for a future computer. anyway, I'd appreciate it if you could you provide a couple of examples of an inter core processor?

Probably but i have no idea, i'm a Mac user and we don't exactly "build" our computers. All i know is that current Macs have Intel Core Duo processors, and Intel Core 2 will arrive soon.

The disk may simply not be formatted, i don't know the name of the formatting utility on Windows, but well, launch it and look if it sees the drive. Reformatting a new drive is always a good idea anyway (factory formatting can be a bit off), personally i always reformat a new drive.

If you're using WinXP, try this: Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management. Here you can partition and format your disk drives.

Another reference: I can see my second hard drive in Device manager but not in 'My Computer'

Hey guys, I set up my new computer, I got a bit of a problem with one driver, actually the nVidia WMD video capture driver. I know you guys are experts in capping video, so I'd like to know if getting an error message "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" is normal if I have installed no special software for capturing video and have made no cabling connection with the source I might want to capture video from yet ( say, satellite receiver etc ).
If no, any idea why I get this message? If yes, what software do I need to use the video-capturing capabilities of the card and start capping?

A million thank you in advance for your help people.

ps. Everything else with building up my computer went smoothly, it was a lot easier than I thought, just connecting cables, lol and it's faaaast

Can't be that. If the system can't see it can't format it. It's either wrong connections, or the motherboard's not supporting it ( or it could be of course, faulty ).
I wouldn't go to windows to reformat, it's better if you do it via DOS. bootdisk.com got boot disks images for old OS ( need the Win98 or ME versions to make a bootbable "floppy" disk with DOS support ) Boot from the "floppy" disk, choose minimal start from the menu then it'll load DOS, type fdisk and will get you the program where you can partition/format your hard drives. It's a new hard disk so you need to make a primary partition and extended partitions, and logical drives inside the extended partition if you need more than 2 partitions. Don't forget to make the primary drive partition active
But if you sent it back to the shop then just get a new one and see if it works. If not then it's the connections/compatibility issue.

I use MediaCoder. It has myriads of options and does it all. You can find it there

Just choose the download-mirror you like.
