You should just go for one of the free anti virus programs. They never hurt anyone.
If u decide to go for one heres some freebies www.grisoft.com http://www.avast.com OR if you can't be bothered get a free online scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com OR if its Mydoom you're worried about download McAfee Stinger Avert http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ It also searches for about 37 other newish viruses and only takes 50 seconds to download on a pishy wee dial up like mine!! |

darje, mainly cases. I just made a new one not too long ago, with cutout flames and a spray painted case + monitor. As for internal, I'm limitied towards just improving performance and over-clocking, as well as whatever my crazy friend does to it.

DAZ, thank you for the link to free anti virus.
I think Antivirus should be FREE. I think the best solution again email virus is to install the Anti Virus on the mail server itself .. where all the email gathered before downloaded by users to their computer. So the Anti Virus software should target the company server and ISP. But of course for home computer .. second protection will be good. for virus tranfered through diskette, cdrom or messenger from someone like .. Queenbee for example. ![]() They'll find way. |

sunwalk, are you ripping dvd to vobs or directly to divx (or xvid)?
i mean, i never get such problems, but i use Smart Ripper to rip to vobs and then DrDivx to encode it to divx, or Gordian Knot for xvid. but if you want to encode it to xvid, i'd recommend you use Auto Gordian Knot, which is as good as the "normal" Gordian but MUCH simpler. good luck ![]() |

I have a big suspicion that system restore gets rid of all that crap, cause it always does it for me. So I don't have an anti-virus program installed anymore ![]() |

I'm serious
![]() system restore will not clear the registry but you can run msconfig to do that. Msconfig/startup/cleanup Anyway, if the virus is in the restore folder your antivirus program will find it but won't be able to get rid of it. So you can either use system restore - as I do - or disable system restore and use your antivirus program. ( but I found it a very bulky and time-consuming software ) It all depends how many programs you have on your computer. If you only need a few programs and you do not install - uninstall programs all the time, having a starting point ( and using system restore ) is ok, cause if it's for one of two programs you can always go back every now and then. But using system restore and creating restore points all the time will eventually wipe out the entry of your original restore point. ![]() What I do is this: I have a starting point with all the programs I need and if I run into any sort of trouble I go back. Then I clear all restore points and make only one where I can go back to. It all depends on the operational system ( I think that with Win XP you can erase restore points at will, right? ) Cause I've got ME so everytime I go back I clear the hard disk space that the system restore takes up by disabling, enabling it back and making another restore point. the whole process takes five minutes. I just luv system restore ![]() edit: Maybe you need an antivirus program, all I know is that using Norton was a pain in the butt for me, took ages to scan my files ( my computer is old and slow ) then find viruses that wouldn't be able to erase. ![]() Stinger? well, that one never found any viruses for me , maybe it works better for XP. From a point on it started freezing when scanning a specific file. So...my opinion is that you don't need any antivirus programs ![]() |

I added something else on my post above.
Well, basically I was having headaches too...for years ![]() Oh, and M$ don't include uninstallers for their programs anymore so if you don't like one - I hated wmp 9 for example - they advice you to use system restore to go back. The only other solution is to format your root partition and start again ![]() Basically, you don't need any more system programs than the ones M$ provides you with. Those programs will probably create more problems than solve problems ![]() |

System Restore is good .. yes .. you should backup your computer often.
But just that this virus problem .. Anti Virus will catch the virus before it could harm your system. If you dont have anti-virus to detect there is virus in your computer.. how you going to know when is it time to use the System Restore? |

yes but you need to have the anti virus program always enabled in your system to do that. Doesn't it slow the computer down and cause other compatibility problems?
I haven't got much experience with the latest viruses, for some reason they only affect Win XP and 2000. but if you have your files in another partition - would the virus affect your files there? If not then you can use system restore as soon as your computer starts behaving funny. |

Thinking that only antivirus slows down the system is not entirely correct.
1. Data Mines/Advert, does it a lot more. 2. MSN messenger slows down your computer dramatically. 3. Unnecessarily launched programs at startup - too. 4. Too many programs at Quick Launch Bar - of course. Anti Virus programs don't slow down the computer. If you have a huge HD to scan, you can always leave the scan during the time you are not at the computer. It's not dangerous to have the computer on because it "eats" very little electricity and has qute good cooling system. Uninstall MSN for fun to see the difference. To uninstall MSN with one click: 1.Start - Run - [the following command below, copy and paste in the command window] RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove 2. You'll be prompted to uninstall MSN. Queenie, Get an Anti-Virus soft! ![]() |
