Everyone who keeps saying "they are this" or "they cannot be that" with such conviction and, dare I say, flippancy, should keep in mind that they most certainly do NOT know the true scope of this special female relationship. How could anyone except for Lena and Yulia themselves know that?
Just be a little careful with your judgement. We wouldn't want anyone to feel like a fool again after the next documentary, no? ![]() xena225 |

How come Lena faints so much? Is she sick?
I am 17, and I never even came close to fainting, despite the fact that in Novermber 2003 alone I sat University Entry Exams + NZEST Scholarship Exams + My dad had a heart attack + a few nerve-wreaking fights on TatySite.net. I wanna faint!! Gimme a reason to faint!! ![]() |

katbeidar, i'm 19 and i've fainted a few times... it's not that great.
I can understand her faint... one of the times i did was when i had a high fever but had to write this paper for a class [the teacher was bitch and wouldn't except any excuses ]. And i just went under.... i fell out of my chair... not good [my dad was an EMT, so he knew what do to] Or maybe she just has Epilepsy |

I hardly have anything to add to the preceding posts, but I just wanted to say that yes, I think coolasfcuk is right in saying nothing like that could happen in America.
![]() ![]() I'm not sure what it's like here because I haven't seen the 2nd episode, but from the 8-minute video of the first episode I felt like everything was more or less staged ... to an extent I didn't feel in the Manskii documentary. |

Really?
In my town in NWPA USA, which is very conservative protestant christian society, Girls constantly held hands and skipped down the hallway of school. They would lay or lean on each other, stroke each others hair and ect. But non of them were gay, they were just friends who were so confortable with each other it didn't matter. And i'd seen them kiss or rub arms and foreheads and stuff. They are just that close... But maybe that's just my town [ we are an odd people ]. And in my Russian Class Last Semester we discussed the Similarities between Russians and Americans and lot of people felt that Americans were more like Russians than they are like the English and even Canadians. So, i dunno... :: and may i note that it wasn't just girls who would do this, hell, i've had male friends just lean on me like how Yulia does sometimes to Lena. It's just like that, i don't care, and they are my friend, i'd known them for years, so it's like... hey there... :: |

thegurgi, really? ...
I'm thinking; I remember in my high school it was in fashion to give each other massages ![]() ![]() I remember walking arm-and-arm with one Russian friend and a girl I knew looking at us in shock and a sort of revulsion. Although I see some girls, American girls, doing the same thing and it being no big deal at all. Maybe it's a question of individuals; this girl is very conservative, and proper, and not very adventurous or exciting; we were good acquaintances for a while but I don't think I've ever touched her, or she me, either. It's kind of funny to think about it that way ![]() For Americans I think physical intimacy between friends is not necessarily a given; there are a lot of people not comfortable with it - like that girl I mentioned, for one - and I think a lot of people I know would hesitate before touching someone even on the shoulder unless they knew them pretty well. Or if there's a big age difference: you might shake their hand, but other than that, nothing ... unless it was something out of the ordinary, like they were hurt. And I think in America it's possible to have a good friend and never physically touch at all; I mean, a lot of times it happens, but sometimes it doesn't. Then again most of the people I know are either much older than me or foreigners or both, so maybe I don't really know for sure what's normal for Americans and what's not ![]() ![]() Anyway the only reason I posted is cause I remembered thinking once that I was such good friends with this one guy, it was crazy we were always so far apart ![]() ![]() |

Yes... It seems like in my town, personal space just isn't an issue. Probably because of how small a town we are and just that we really do know everyone... so, it's more of a village. And i always get the impression that in Europe, people are compact and they interact with each other. So they get to be closer.
As for that discussion in class, we talked about cultures, intimacy and just they way we act. And that's what most people assessed. Of Course, the closest thing we had to a Russian in that class was a Ukrainian. [ the teacher is Polish ] |

My own two cents...
Well, I must say that from what i've experienced, Americans create a lot of distance btwn each other. I mean, my roommate, for example, she knows everything about me and i know everything about her but I doubt she would even hug me if I was totally upset and crying. I come from a family that's very physical - always hugging and stuff...
Anyway, there are a few exceptions and girls are more hugey (i invented a word) than guys, for the most part. But seriously, i mean, ppl here, aren't physically close - or maybe that's just me 'coz i've always lived in big cities. OMG, when my roommate met my mother for the first time, my mom hugged her and I saw a total look of discomfort on her face. Back to the topic - yeah, i'd really like to see the video. |

ITA about the hugging thing here. I live in Toronto, one of the most unfriendly cities in Canada and North America !!! I find places like Boston, Vancouver, Montreal, Florida, Montana, Seattle, Sydney, Chicago, (especially Maine and New Hamshire) way more friendlier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most people do not hug here. I am making a generalization but I don't see a lot of people hug in subways, in university, in high school, etc. I also come from a family that rarely hugs. They hug by patting each other on the back. I had a roomate from Mexico in boarding school and she was always like, "Why don't you hug me properly?" It took me 3 months to actually hug somebody properly. That was in grade 9. I feel aquward hugging strangers that I don't know. People don't touch a lot here. I find people from places like Mexico, Spain, Israel, the netherlands, Jamaica, Iran way more huggy! |
