spy, glad to see you are supporting BG
dont get me wrong, the girl can sing.... the song is a bit weird lyrically, though very bulgarian folky (and i mean real folk, not the new poop-folk chalga stuff), but mayby this is because i understand what she is saying.. kind of, since she moans a lot... and the drumming is great, but with such stage performance it will not even pass the semi.......the girl has NO presence....but if they work on some crazy performance, sure, at least its original... though her moaning will killl meeeeeeeeee listening to it |

My comments on the entries
Belarus ( yeah I heard it on the Greek selection show - it doesn't do it for me and a little bit of this and a little bit of that but it's not powerful - it will fail in the semi stage imo ) Denmark ( oh dear, is that a transexual? never mind, very weak song, awful performance ) Norway ( truly awful and very kitsch disco/electro performance of old by a hapless duo ) Albania ( a duo singing some kind of quirky Balkan ballad - the singing is a bit annoying and the orchestration all over the place- choruses are nice though) Armenia ( like last year's entry only a lot slower - another ballad in English with an Oriental touch - it's very mediocre and won't make an impression imo. They won't do it twice in a row. Belgium ( haha, what the hell? a disco/soul ballad straight from the 70's? Motown? Tha style died 30 years ago! really incredible they feel they have to revive something like that in Eurovision - The music is more pleasant that the others, I guess. the whole group wears shades Bulgaria ( as I explained above my favourite song so far and I have discussed it in length ) Cyprus ( my second favourite - go Cyprus! ) Estonia ( another "rock" effort in a modern style that didn't quite catch up with ESC - mediocre song and static performances. Nothing special. They try but they're no Vanilla ninja ) Finland ( like Estonia's only a bit "heavier". Too serious for ESC. Unimpressive ) Fed Macedonia ( Balkan ballad - the usual stuff only this time sung by a woman. Big pompose choruses and long legs. ) Greece ( As I said I don't think Greece will do great this year. Rehashing the same ideas and choreography will get people tired of it. ) Iceland: Another one of those heavy rock ballads. I listened to the Icelendic version and it's decent. It might be better in English. However this type of song hasn't done well in recent years. One I like. They managed to fit a guitar solo there as well. Strong performance. Ireland: Wow, very folkey this one, beware - They're desperately trying to replicate their former glories but this is way too Irish and too folkey imo. I really can't see who will vote for this one, it's not Eurovision material, but Irish folk contest material. Certain FLOP. Israel: The controversial Israeli song. (ok, they obviously have to change the lyrics - This is a bit of a farcical song, remember Lithuania last year? Well, this is even worse it's got a "rock" chorus and they change styles in the middle of the song singing in different languages etc. It's not eurovision, it's the comedy central. Latvia Is the questa Notte? Really stupid this, like Il Devo or something similar. Semi operatic, semi pop. CRAP Malta: This is a gypsy ballad, violins and all. Really dunno how the public will react to this, it might do well as the Maltese ballads ususally do. For me it's boring but I have to listen to a better version. Moldova: A gothic rock song in Eurovision? yeah that's what it is! Very unusual for ESC to do well. Montengro: AOR with a Balkan touch. Very limited. Holland: Yet another ballad turn disco. Boring, unoriginal, no chance once again for the Netherlands. They're really bombing it year after year. Norway: Disco/Latin style. She sings the chorus in spanish toi fit the style. Very trite. No glory for Norway this year, though with the absence of decent songs they might be voting for this one which is a shame. Poland: American r'n'b style with rap.. There's no way they will vote for something like this one. Girl trying to sing like Beyonce. I changes halkfway into another rthythm abruptly and then back to the beginning etc. No coherence at all. Romania: Proper kitsch. A guy wearing a taxudo and a hat like Abraham's Lilcoln' sings in different languages and different styles. Then another dude sings in Russian. Another shocker after Israel, wonder who votes for these ones. It's a disgrace actually. Slovenia: Another Balkan ballad. Woman's voice is so out of tune it's difficult to listen. It then turns into an Il Devo style of song. RUBBISH but lots of cleavage. Spain: Eurodisco by a Spanish boyband. It might actually get points due to the fact that there are so many rubbish songs this year - and they have to vote for something at the end of the day. It's got verve but of course it's totally unoriginal. [b]Switzerland[b]: I have commented on the Swiss before, they're trying to cash in on the Lordi success in a different way. Turkey: It's ok, it's got a good rthythm and might do well after all. Very repetitive though Verdict: another rubbish selection of songs so far with the obvious exception of Bulgaria, Cyprus and Iceland which are the only songs I like. |

I've now watched all the videos of songs selected so far on YouTube. I pretty much agree with spyretto about a lot of the songs. Most of them are really poor, extremely bad even for Eurovision. To avoid repetition, I'll only comment on the songs where I have a different opinion or something new to add.
Andorra A song that was selected very recently. It's a slightly punky rock song performed by an all-male band. I really like it. I love the lead singer's faux-cockney accent when he sings in English. My second-favourite song just from the sound. Listening to it again, I realised the lyrics are about protecting the environment. This one is definitely getting my vote. Belgium Totally seventies, but fashion be damned, it's not bad at least compared to most of the dross this year. Bulgaria I disagree with spy. It's good, but it's too Balkan for my taste. I expect it to do very well, though. Bulgaria is well-placed to benefit from both the Balkan and Slavic voting blocs and may be unbeatable. Cyprus Wow! Electronic dance music with French lyrics. It's completely different from all the other entries. There hasn't been a Eurovision song I've liked this much since 'Take Me To Your Heaven' in 1999. But I thought Kate Ryan was the best for years last year and she was knocked out in the semi, so that's no guarantee of success. This one is better and more distinctive, though. I hope it's not too avant-garde or too French for the voters. Do I need to mention that it's my favourite song this year? Iceland I find this one boring. Sorry, spy. Israel It's so unbelievably bad it has to be seen - once. Don't say I didn't warn you if you develop post-traumatic stress disorder afterwards. Nuclear war is a difficult subject for a comic song, although the brilliant Tom Lehrer certainly managed to do it well. These people have no talent. A potentially good idea, but lousy execution. Netherlands I disagree with spy. It's certainly dated, but it's much more listenable than most. Romania It had to happen after Lordi won last year. Romania enters with a Dracula song. It's very funny and wonderfully kitsch. I can just picture all the Romanians I know hiding their faces behind their hands when this one comes up, but I enjoyed it. This song has a big problem, though: the Swiss entry. Switzerland Rather than use Switzerland's own export, Frankenstein's Monster, the Swiss rather unfairly decided to use the vampire idea that by rights belongs to Romania. It's more professional, not as kitsch as Romania's entry, and actually has rather good music. The Swiss are obviously going for Lordi-style comedy and the more low-key approach the Romanians take in the video has more charm for me. I have to admit this is the better song, though. Actually, this is one of the ones I like most, although it's not as good as last year's Lordi. |

There were a couple of other alternatives which I think would've done much better than this one in the the international finals. So it's not that we don't have the alternatives ... (well, actually I guess that might be the problem... None of the songs were GOOD!) but the norwegian public seem to vote for the most fucked up song each year. Allthough, last year was actually fair enough - the best song won and it was pretty decent, but not what europe wanted of course Nothing could beat Finland. But this year we're screwed all over either wait. We won't make the semi with this one, I'm sure. Hahaha. |

spy, ok so i re-listened and i have to admit that i now really like the song.... though, i have to agree its a bit too balkan and most likely too much balkan for westerners and people up north.
But i am happy to see people that can actually sing and professional performers.... i looked them up on youtube and i found an interwview for Eurovision that they gave - their english is really bad, but i can tell they are genuine and nice people. Elitsa also reminds me of Alanis Morissette must be the jaw, the eyes, the hair, and they body type .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTQdI...elated&search= Stoyan yankulov looks like he came straight from the 80s but i know him from before, he is the most famous bulgarian drummer/percussionist - and man, he is good. Elitsa is almost my age - born in '77 and studied in Special Music schools since 1st grade! first for folklore and then for percussions. oh and i wanted to add that they should invite 3 female folk singers to acompany her in the chorus.. which makes it really like bulgarian folk (the mystery of the bulgarian voices for example, where the women's voices are layered and few franctions apart so it sounds like an echo) - i thought of it because in the original (the studio recording) you can hear in the chorus more than one voice - and it sounds SO much better than the life performance |

The songs from Georgia and Lithuania have now been selected. All the songs so far are listed here and mp3s can be downloaded from links there.
Georgia A decidedly mediocre song, but the singer is very pretty. Lithuania A pleasant slow ballad, but nothing special or memorable. Romania's song has been disqualified because a fragment of it had been performed before. That's good news for Switzerland. Listening to the better ones again, I think I was too unenthusiastic about Belgium's song. It's actually fairly good. It will probably bomb, though, because that sort of retro song usually does badly in the voting. |

Georgia's song reminded me of the songs in Madonna's Ray Of Light. Not strong like them but still sounding nice.
I just didnt like the Croatian and Lithuanian entries in the first listen, and i didnt have a second for both. I watched the Romanian final like two weeks ago and the best song for me was the Spanish one,the guy in 2002 was singing. The winner was not impressive. Greece has a normal song this year, can be improved by the stage act. I agree with many of you about the Bulgarian song,i like it. Cyprus can make it to the final but i dont enjoy to listen to this song.Poland is in the same category for me. Finland seems to get in the semi final next year. I didnt listen to the entries like Norway,Estonia,Belgium,Iceland,Denmark but seeing the different comments,i dont have a thought what they are like |

Elitsa looks better, imho, of course.
Russians speak well about Bulgarian entry this year. Well, that's a good sign. Edit: I just checked this entry and I can't imagine it look enough well on stage. I'm afraid it will sound/look boring on stage. |

I'm listening to what coolasfcuk said is "blowing everybody" etc. Turkey English Kenan Doğulu Shake It Up Şekerim Shake It Up Sweetheart Already announced issit? ok, let me go back to listen to Bulgaria's song a 100th time now, do I still like it? get the mp3 version, it's good. Quote:
They're really getting cheeky in Greece now thinking 1) they will win or at least get top 5 with this one because europe voted this stuff before and will continue to do so, so they got eurovision by the balls now 2) put some more elements of kitsch to "enhance" the stage presence to give more Greek than oriental flavour, how about 100 bouzuki players in the middle of the song..oh wait they're not allowed. What about 2 gigantic pots oozing tzatziki and taramosalata on some equally gigantic pitta bread replcas made of plastic?? that would be pure aphrodisiac delight ...ta ra ram Yassou, Maria, Yassou spyretto yassou everybodyyyy, yasou, yamas, yia harantan, moussakaaaa!! Quote:
So Holland is good, simon? Don't you find it excruciatingly unoriginal and boring? Yeah maybe it's gonna make it to the final by the sympathy vote. That or Iceland... Now for the other ones Georgia sounds pretty cool for first entry. not sure if it's gonna make it to the final but it's definitely interesting and she's got a good voice. I hope I don't hate it after a few listening sessions. Lithuania Sounds overall pleasant but the way I see it it might be passed unnoticed. Croatia So no Balkan ballad for Croatia this year but a "Carlos Santana" type of song. Oh man, that live version is really BAD Hmm, the Belgium entry is not bad after all, despte horribly dated. Jamiroquay does that for years ( only with better songs of course ) But they can make it to the final with this one, I guess? Would spread even more embarassment. So which ones of the kitsch songs will be a blast? Romania? Israel? Denmark? another one? the vampires perhaps? I can envision mid Europeans voting for the Israeli entry like mad if it's allowed to compete. I probably would |

I think they do and they have a sense of humour too. It's called "Love in a French way" or similar and it perfectly represents the country. LOL. This rubbish has very good chances to score high... really... really high.

Lets add this to the rest of the "cool" songs, so we have Denmark, Israel, Romania, and France so far..4 songs(!) twice as many as last year's, and it must be a record for the ESC...and there still might be more! So who will step into Lithuania's shoes and win the battle of the jokers this year? and will we see a joker win the whole contest one day? Soooo 8 points to Denmark! 9 points to France!! 10 points to Romania!! and the 12 points from spy go to: yeaaah!!! Israel! push the button you ayatollahs!! I forgot to mention the maths sign in front of those points..it's the MINUS sign ( feels so exciting to watch Eurovision to see if any of those 4 sods will score high this year...it might be all 4 of them ..oh yeah, so exciting indeed France, loooool |

With all the Slavic and Nordic countries, it's become impossible for a song in French to win Eurovision, so we can really send any crap we want, it'll make little difference on the final result.
Fatals Picards' song is essentially a joke and a mockery of the dominance of English actually since it's in horrendous Franglais. Fatals Picards is a band mainly based on parodic humor, here's another of their songs 'Goldorak Est Mort' to get an idea. |

That's about right. None of the winning songs were sung completely in any other language than English since 1991. The last winner singing fully in other than English language was Carola in 1991(Swedish) and maybe Dana International 1998. Though Dana's lyrics were kinda international "Viva-la-viva-viva-victoria-afrodita-cleopatra..." You want to win - you go English.

Oh boy... Last year Germany send some folks singing country and this year they send a dude that swings in German. A couple of minutes ago the German entry for this year's ESC was chosen. And the lucky man is Roger Cicero with his song "Frauen regier'n die Welt" (Women rule the world). This guy sucks as do the song and lyrics.
pic: http://www.bonnaparte.de/redadmin/bilder/8447-2.jpg I think any mp3 should be online soon. |
