Simon, I liked the song a lot. I don't think it was shit. Just not the kind of material for Eurovision.

In that episode Irish officials were looking for the worst act possible for the following year so they would finally *lose* because organizing Eurovison 3 times in a row was costing the country too much money.
It was a joke, but i'm thinking it may not be so far from the truth.
That was then, this is now. The British regard Eurovision as a joke, so it's been hard to find anyone who's any good to volunteer to go. The UK hasn't won since 1997; there's no question of the BBC not having the money. I thought this year's British entry was much better than usual, one of the best songs in this year's competition. A sort of melange of elements of 'Where is the love?' (the music) and 'We don't need no education' (the lyrics), with just a little bit of 'Baby one more time' (the costumes). It made me laugh, but maybe the humour was too subtle for most. The victory of Lordi points to a new solution to the perennial problem of the British song - submit a more obvious joke entry. If it becomes a contest for who can take Eurovision least seriously, the British should win.

I feel bad for Kate Ryan because she had the best song and so the pundits naively made her the favourite. I don't think it was a French title that did for her in the semis, it was that it was too modern. Music that sounds like it belong in this millennium is too avant-garde for most of the Eurovision audience. As spyretto said, maybe a trance song will win in 30 years' time.

It's the same for the UK and Germany. It should be pointed out that Eurovision was traditionally dominated by the far west of Europe and countries like Finland and Greece never got a look in. The new order in Eurovision is the revenge of the formerly oppressed and excluded.

Out of the simple fact that I take Eurovision as it is, I'm not dissapointed. France will win when they send again something like Natasha St-Pierre. So it's not about any rigged voting. Finland won even when Ukraina voted for Russia and Germany for Turkey.

At least two! But let's be happy, if he had only an average song, Russia would have won easily. They have strong minorities in quite a lot of voting countries to get high scores plus the other slavic countries' friendship points, nothing could stop Russia from winning. Thank God, they have nothing really good to present. They would win every ESC!

Yeah, but that something would have to sing in English like everyone else to win, and that ain't gonna happen.

But she didn't win when they sent her, although she did better than they usually do. That's the kind of music France always sends and it hasn't won for a very long time.

Where did you get this idea from? Russia has been trying to win this contest for a while now and nothing helped so far.

Btw, the Turkish trassexual Superstar entry has been spinning in my head all the day today. Speak about a devilish sticky crap! Ha-ha!

Russia has a lot of talented artists, but they would never go to ESC, and tatu will do it never again. (And their 2003 performance was certainly below average). Not against Russia, but for fairness and equal conditions as much as possible.

Turkey lies at least about 0.1% in Europe. It's also consequent with it being considererd to join the EU (not that I'd favor that).

The thing with Israel is somehow understandable, because the arab league doesn't recognize it and excludes it. But somebody has to.

But I really don't understand the inclusion of Armenia.

Trying with some Troll or Prime Minister, a boring Savicheva, Podolskaya. Come on, a bit more quality should be easily available in Russia.

For an ESC-song I thought it was kinda decent, not the worst, but still I didn't like it. Heh. It's not my cup of tea, but I saw a bunch of other songs that were alot worse by far. At least his performance were ok. It's not good when people sing awfully false, as maaany did yesterday!

I don't think Israel is in ESC because Europe feel sorry for them not having any friends down in the middle east. I guess it's much rather the fact that it's the only "western" country in the middle east, and therefore there's no reason to keep them out. I think more and more countries "down there" will join up as they get westernized. I have no idea about Armenia, but I'm guessing it's the case? hehe. Either way, I don't mind some countries outside europe joining up. Get some fresh blood into the competition...

Just my thought excactly. I don't think artists in Russia don't give a damn. Russia has been up there fighting in the top every last year, aye? I think they're trying, and it's bound to happen soon...

Armenia is culturally European and politically it's a member of the Council of Europe. Why on earth would we want to exclude them? Israel is culturally more European than Middle Eastern. Turkey is geographically 3% (not 0.1%) in Europe. Any country that belongs to the EBU can participate. Morocco took part in the contest once. Lebanon was going to participate in 2005, but it turned out that Lebanese law forbid them to show the Israeli entry so they had to withdraw. I think Georgia wants to take part too. Why not? Europe should be defined by culture, not geographic pedantry. I read that the number of countries that can take part is capped at 40, so Georgia will have to get in quick before Kosovo joins Montenegro in getting independence. (I liked it when the Serbian announcer on the show last night said he was speaking from 'Belgrade, the capital of Serbia and Montenegro' - until tomorrow, I thought).
