They won because they had the daftest costumes, the flashiest show, the biggest publicity, and a half decent song

Strangely enough they are not, as someone said on another forum, a bunch of trekkies on their way to a convention who were sent through the wrong door by a BBC stagehand, but an established band who have already released two albums - see http://www.lordi.org

Hang on, established act, lots of controversy, doing this at the request of their government?

Where have I heard that before?

I know they already released some albums. I just think give it 12 months and they will be nothing, we will see

Half decent song? I dunno about that!

I don't think Eurovision will have much of an effect on Lordi's success either way. They have their fans who will stick with them, and they may pick up a few more, although I don't see them getting much bigger outside Finland.

Hald decent in comparison to the rest of Eurovision

I dunno. I'm sure someone like Alizée would make it to top 10. Especially with a nice catchy synth pop number.

Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Well, that is where we most definately disagree then. I think it was the worst "song" there.

But hey, I just hate this kind of music LOL

They were nothing before and they'll still be nothing in 12 months. A band that would make it to the Headbanger's Ball once or twice a year is not "something". Though the costumes are awesome, got to give them that.

French? It wasn't! As Terry pointed out she was singing "Shut That Door" all the way through.
btw, Rachel I think the caps don't work, you get the sound but no picture.

spy, they work for me. You need to make sure you have all the relevant up to date mpg2 program and stream codecs. The vids are raw satellite stream caps.

Quite a while, as Lordi were very popular long before participating in ESC. They've toured with Nightwish, were a big name at Wacken Open Air 2003, have given out several albums and have been well known for hiding their real identities. I think they'll get alot of publicity with their next album and after that they might not get the media's attention as they have before, but people will buy their stuff, and they won't be forgotten I think they'll stick with us much more than the greek winner from last year. I honestly didn't remember what song won last year before I listened it in the introduction to the show. I hadn't heard it a single time since last year. But I've heard that it has been played alot down in europe and only 2 times on norwegian radios that might explain it.

And Lordi have given out 3 albums. Get Heavy, The Monsterican Dream and The Arockalypse... Hard Rock Halleluja is track 7 on the last one. Their webbie isn't up-to-date.

Eurovision certainly won't turn you into a big name but if you're a little established it certainly won't harm to make your country a little proud then go back to what you were doing before.
As for Paparizou, relocating to Greece and singing sucky songs like "my number one", will certainly not help her solo career. It didn't happen for Ruslana either. Antique were great though, everybody knows Dynata Dynata because of Antique.
Lara Fabian is now an established singer in Francophone countries and she did take part in Eurovision but did that help her career? No.
So I guess Lordi will go back to what they were doing before. Their songwriting is not strong enough to turn them into stars. Their songs are all on the same tempo and very old fashioned. Singer's howling is not the best either.

I'm guessing Lordi are popular in the rock community, personally I've never heard of them before... and I'll probably not hear of them after all this Eurovision drama is over.

They won because they were different, wearing "monster" costumes and just making a big joke out of themselves, which is perfect because it stands for everything Eurovision is. I hope people voted for them because they finally had someone show that Eurovision is not taken seriously, by anyone. I mean, it was just so ridiculous that it HAD to win!

Yeah they were awesome for Eurovision, just what people needed to see to rekindle a bit of interest in the thing...but I'm hoping that we won't be inundated with rock wanabee's next year as a consequence of their win. It's good to keep a little variety.

if Rammstein ever decided to represent Germany it'd be different though...I think what Lordi did was to pave the way for random acts to appear in the ESC - just for kicks. Before it was like "shit, it's Eurovision, no bloody way!". Now it might be like "we don't give a shit, lets go and have some fun". Very Tatuish.

Their songwriting is pretty decent I'd say. They make rock'n'roll with a twist of heavyness and morbid humour. It's like Kiss reincarnated into Monster bodies - and that's good.

And the vocalist is great! That's one of the main reasons why I like Lordi really, cause Sentenced is one of my fav bands (and I'm convinced it is the same vocalist. Their voices are just too similar for it to be two persons, and since both bands are finnish I more or less know it's the same guy. Hehe.). I'd recommend Sentenced to everyone as they have more varied songs, but soft and heavier songs, and the vocalist uses more clean vocals as well.

It's all about the show. The image is very important, but I hope people did vote for the music as well. It's pretty acceptable music I'd say. It's hard rock, not black metal. They were there to be provocative, and they got - as said earlier - alot of bad pr. But the rock and metal communities have loved them for their stunt, and they have gotten alot of good pr as well, and all pr are good pr really.

Personally I think it was by far the best song, both their scene show and the song itself. The other songs were awefully one-dimensional, old and used, too trendy, too retro and really we've heard it all before in ESC.

Well... yes and no. I hope they helped pave the way for ROCK, not random "new" acts (f.ex Lithuenia's shitty song). But I'd like to state that it was actually Norway who first paved the way with the glam rock band we sent last year. Someone had to break the ice, and the ice-breakers always have a hard time winning. It's like being first in a battle - you will die, but people will follow your steps and manage to go even further. Lordi took the heavyness a couple of inch up the ladder + they had a scene show that were much more extreme in its own way, which honestly did pay off quite alot.

Some lessons to learn for all future ESC wannabees: creativity over cut&paste, individuality over currying favour, fun and vitality over boredom and triviality. It has not to be a great song or a professional appearance, you don't have to be beautiful or glamourous, but convince with your very presence. "Listen to me, this is ME!"

The Israeli winner did it a few years ago, Ruslana did it, the turkish winner Sertab, too. And the fun performances did well in the last years, oh wonder, did nobody see that ESC is entertainment? The big surprise this time was, that there were so many retro, ABBA-esc and howl songs, white uniforms like the maiden voyage of a cruise ship. Has nobody learned anything?

It was definitely because of Norway last year, I mean what else could the West juxtapose to rival the balkan ethnic trend other than mighty rock itself? On the other hand, Norway didn't win and Lordi did, so Lordi will be regarded as Eurovision "pioneers".
As I said, being a rock fan I wouldn't wanna see Eurovision inundated with poor rock or metal acts, and I'd say the same if it were for old-fashioned ballads, balkan ethnic songs or just plain pop. But then again, Eurovision is not about the music anymore, so lets hope that next year acts are as outrageous and interesting as possible. And that's the lesson.
