Computer help thread

I'm not all knowing about computers or anything, but since there are some questions coming up from time to time, it could be fun to help out when there were problems about computer related stuff.
And I'm sure that someone on the forum knows the answer to a problem if there should be any. In case I don't.

About missing codecs or problems with videofiles:

go to: http://avicodec.duby.info/
Download AVIcodec v1.1.0.4 - run the file.

When the file has been opened in the AVIcodec program it should tell you what codecs there are missing, and provide a link to where to get them too.. Never tried it though. But looks like some of the codecs could be updated at my computer too.. so I'll get that done in a sec.

im too big a nerd for my own liking at times so if you guys need any computer help with schtuff im happy to be a little helper ant too especially since im on all day during the day GM + 2hrs

when im at work im generally bored when im not working so have loads of time to sit on tatysite and read the ramblings and help out if i can

Actually I have the exact same problem. It used to work better. Now I get redirected to perfectnav or something all the time.
I'll see what I can do..

Edit:
Ok I found out why I have the problem at least:
"Perfect Nav is an application that is bundled with the Free Ad Supported version of Kazaa Media Desktop. Perfect Nav can be removed when Kazaa is uninstalled."


Anyway if this is not the case at your computer go to:
Functions -> Internet settings - Advanged
In the buttom: choose "don't search from adress bar" (or similar, since I run the Danish version of Explorer)

queenie : still searching for a solution for you. its hard to make suggestions without actually being in front of the damned pc at times unfortunately cause a lot depends on what people have installed on their pcs in the first place.

TLFdk's solution sounds like it will work tho !

yeah.. and with the stupid perfect nav I had installed my solution didn't work. Now I installed another version of kazaa and removed the old one, and the adress bar works like it should

You could try installing Kazaa Lite. Kazaa comes with lots of excess crap that installs on your pc. K-Lite claims not to

for all the crap websites put on your computer ( like spyware, toolbar and all that shite - they should be prosecuted for invasion of privacy but anyhow ) can try a program called ad-aware which will find many spyware programs and remove them.
It doesn't remove all though as some creep into and make changes on the registry so you need some program that will find those and remove them. I use a program called "registry mechanic" which is quite good.

Try those two Queenbee and your computer will be releaved


For codecs you need the wmp 8,9 codecs, Divx, and Xvid as well as a DVD playback program that will install the mpeg-2 codec. That's all I use and they're sufficient. Those codec packs like Nimo are not recommened on the basis of being particularly crappy.

I have some program that my dad installed for me, which also has a registry tool, and so a registry cleaner.. It's good. Oooh, I totally forgot about ad-aware... Thanks for reminding me spyretto.

lol.. well no convincing needed.. It's not like I'm out of money because of software or something, that would require one thing which isn't the case.
