There really isn't one other than that. They actually do serve no practical purpose. But looking at it from a..."Different' perspective, I guess it's kind of like a virtual style? You dress how you want to in reality, and on the net, nobody can see you, so you can express your personality through colors and images and such. Personally, I like displaying my work becuase I like it when people comment on it, its fun to see the reaction of someone towards something I've created. I'm not exactly sure why, but for some reason it does.
Other than that, no, there is not a reason why the forum needs them.
