I'm sorry it didn't work. Let's try another way:
- First, configure the Windows Explorer to
show hidden files.
- Click on the Start button and select "Run".
- Type in "
%APPDATA%\vlc", without the quotes, and hit Enter.
- Now you shold see one folder "
cache" and one file "
vlcrc".
- Delete these folders & files, they'll we be recreated when VLC starts.
- Run the "
Reset VLC defaults and quit" from the start menu again.
If this doesn't work either, consider downgrading VLC:

suggested here, sometimes older versions are more stable than newer ones.
Uninstall your current version, reboot, and try the older version. You can find 0.8.4a
