kate : that was going to be my last ditch response :) that she backup / format / reinstall

that way youre starting with a clean slate :done:

I had this problem several months ago, that was my experience. I think it's a sort of easier to unistall a single soft than to rerun the entire os.

Most of the bugs I have been removing from my machine have been data-miners but - like I said before - as soon as I remove 'em they just keep coming back!

Well, at least it does't sound like a virus to me.

Kate 24-06-2004 23:47

I deleted my KaZaA a loooong time ago. First of all, when you download a file from KaZaA there's a 70% chance that it's corrupt or fake, and second of all... well the first reason is good enough. With mIRC available, who needs KaZaA?

By the way, if anyone has trouble using mIRC, tell me by PM, and if we have enough people I'll make a tutorial thread. That way we'll never have to download fake movies and bad mp3s!! :D

it is easier to try and sort out smaller problems for sure, but sometimes if it isnt possible to sort out the smaller ones ... then unfortunately a complete backup/format/reinstall is a better solution :(

speaking from experience tho, as long as your OS is still intact, then technically the machine is salvageable

Kate 24-06-2004 23:50

It is in my experience that the longer you use your installed Windows, the slower and more annoying it becomes. So, it's a good thing to reinstall it once in a while anyway. I like clean starts, anyway.

worked great, mossopp.. happy first attachment mail.. may the next be for better reasons :rose:

edit: just noticed.. might want to install the updates ready for windows. It's the globe in the right corner.. double click and click install if ready for installation

rosh 24-06-2004 23:57

omniscient.exe is the culprit ! doing som reading will post findings in a few. not going to bed yet :)

forre 24-06-2004 23:58

yay.. good thing you're staying up, rosh :rose:

edit: hehe.. didn't even know what you were thanking me for at first, forre. Guess it's the hosting and thats no trouble at all.. it's the easiest part actually. After suggesting it I figured we could have used the member gallery for it.. though I guess it would be misuse of the system? :lalala:

Only thing I can suggest from the top of my head is installing the windows updates. And then go check at the update page afterwards to check for more. At least one of the updates is the firewall option that can prevent some troubles later on :)

rosh 25-06-2004 00:01

flddrrk.exe is also worrying me ... but cant find anything on this just yet

Thanks again for trying so hard to help me out. :rose:

rosh 25-06-2004 00:06

okay ! i have answers

uninstall Windows SA

its whats running omniscient which is a known dodgy program ...

rosh 25-06-2004 00:07

also also also !!!

shit i am trying to type this fast enough without editing so youll see the posts :

your hosts file ? its just called host or hosts,

delete everything in it !

rosh 25-06-2004 00:09

hosts file is located here : C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

just delete everything in it. if there is anything in it.

if omniscient.exe isnt gone ... you can also just search for all files called omniscient [search for omniscient.*] and paste a list here. ill tell you which you can delete.

forre 25-06-2004 00:10

Mossopp, Okay, just stop those processes and see if it will be better.
Ctrl+Alt+Del > Processes > omniscient.exe > End Process

Edit: Okie, Rosh has a good plan I think. Go for it, Mossopp.

Mossopp 25-06-2004 00:11

OK, Windows SA is now gone.
Currently trying to find this host file of which you speak.....
