I know this much is true....

The "Beliefs" thread got me thinking.....what do we know to be true?

I thought it would be interesting for us to post what we believe to be true. Something you've thought up yourself, or that you've heard from another person that made you think, "Yes! That's *so* right!"

I guess I should start.

1) If I have to choose between being kind, or being honest, I'll choose being kind.

2) Anything worth doing is worth *overdoing*. Take big bites out of life.

3) If you are good enough at what you do, they *can't* ignore you. (That's basically the theme of the book "Ender's Game.").

Ok, Next!

true is an understatement

ok let's be clear nothing is certain so truth has to be dealt with as a variable in life..........

so keeping in mind that truth is a variable i think that it is true:

that we live in a three dimensional world
that there is something like a universe
that things still occur on earth that we can not explain rationaly and there for are seen as devine occurances.
that i love my ..........

oh well there are many things that i considder true,
.......for now at least..........

You have a good point---rarely can we say for sure something is certain---and it's possible that we can say *nothing* is certain.

Maybe I should change the title to "What I believe to be true"?

Anyway, here's another.

1) No matter how bad things get, they seem to not hurt so much as long as at least one other person understands your pain.

truth and hypothesis...

well now im not realy in pain so... lets get going and make this an thread to twist your mind.....

I do also take for true:

that the speed of light is not the maximum speed in the universe.

for example: if one ray of light comes from point A going in a straight line towards point B and if at the same time another ray of light comes from point B going in a straight line towards point A, then the speed between these rays is twice the speed of light.
in other words speed is just measurement from an object into relation to another object when atleast one of these objects is movingin relationt to the other.............

still with me?

certainly c is not the the fastest speed in the universe, it has been proven that entities travel faster than the speed of light, However, nothing with any fraction of matter can be accelerated to the speed of light, as its mass would become infinate.

Still with you...

...I think. Even if there is some danger my brains might melt out through my ears if I think about it too much. LOL

1) Shared pain is lessened, shared joy is increased. (Spider Robinson. I've been re-reading his books lately).

Good point....

....and it's interesting that you should mention that, Rosh, because in the Spider Robinson book I am reading (Stardance) he makes a point that an army that was telepathic would have an advantage over everyone else. Communication would be so much faster.

1)It's not that you find what you're looking for last, it's just that you stop looking when you've found it.
2)When life gives you oranges, make juice.
3)People will never understand you, dont try to explain.
4)Dont cry over something not worth crying for

Queenbee--do you mean that people won't understand you at all, or that they won't understand *everything* about you?

Ok Queenbee, I understand.

1) One day you look in the mirror and realize that what you see is all you will ever be. You either accept that, kill yourself, or stop looking in mirrors. (The character Londo on Babylon 5).

I think this is not true.
it just seems to be so, because we still standing a point we are measuring from and we can not see things that are moving away from us or towards us at c (yet)
All our measuring devices conceived until now have c as a limitation of their capabilities no matter in what way you look at it.........

actualy when you take a look at a blackhole (if there are) and you would send something into it then this thing will disapear out of sight long before it has reached the blackhole because it has passed c

yo next mind breaker!

another home truth :

reality isnt a predefined concept. our own personal reality is that which we perceive it to be.

Here's one my dad used to say (he was in the military for 20 years).

"The more you sweat during peacetime, the less you bleed during wartime."

Which, I always took to mean, the more you train the less likely you are to be harmed during the actual fighting.

rosh, -funny you've mentioned it, since I think about it more and more lately.
We don't really know, if we even exist, do we? We suppose it may be true, given what we know, or at least WHAT WE THINK WE KNOW.
One good movie touching the subject ,which impressed me lately (that is, after "Matrix", of course) - "The Others"
If we were dead- how would we know it? What if for some reason the same life story would continue to go on for us, this time - as an illusion?
