"Kill Gays" Singer to Begin US Tour

'Kill Gays' Singer To Begin US Tour - Yesterday at 7:16 PM by Beth Shapiro
New York City - A Jamaican pop singer who advocates "executing" gays will begin a US concert tour next month. Beenie Man, whose real name is Anthony Davis, will appear in 33 cities from August 1 to November 8, including New York City, Chicago,Miami, Philadelphia, Cincinnati and Atlanta. Beenie Man's hit tune, Bad Man Chi Chi Man (Bad Man, Queer Man), instructs listeners to kill gays: "If yuh nuh chi chi (queer) man wave yuh right hand and (NO!!!)/If yuh nuh lesbian wave yuh right hand and (NO!!!)Some bwoy will go a jail fi kill man tun bad man chi chi man!!!./Tell mi, sumfest it should a be a showdown/Yuh seem to run off a stage like a clown (Kill Dem DJ!!!)". In Jamaican patois slang, "batty man" and "chi chi man" are the equivalent of "poof" and "faggot." Beenie Man has dueted with Janet Jackson and Missy Elliott and is trying to break into the lucrative US pop market. In a recent interview he defended the homophobic content in his music saying it reflects Jamaican culture. "The music reflects how Jamaican people see it," he said. "I think there are things that are a part of Caribbean culture just like any other culture in the world. Everybody has their way of life. People have beliefs and that comes from who they are. The music come from that."Last month, Jamaica's most notable gay civil rights leader was brutally murdered in his home. (story) A Beenie Man concert scheduled for London several weeks later was cancelled following a protest by British gay rights group Outrage. (story) When the singer arrived at the airport he was questioned by British police but allowed to enter the country. Friday, Outrage called on American gay rights groups to put pressure on the venues which had booked Beenie Man to perform. "No one would give a platform to a singer who advocated killing black or Jewish people," said Outrage spokesperson Peter Tatchell in a statement. "A performer who brazenly glorifies and encourages the murder of lesbians and gay men should not be rewarded with concerts and financial success."
"Securing the cancellation of Beenie Man's concert is very important. By hitting him in the pocket, it will help pressure Beenie Man and other anti-gay Jamaican singers to abandon their murderous incitements," Tatchell said.

Jeez, what moron would even allow that kind of garbage to circulate, anyway?? And where does he get off thinking that "a person's beliefs" can justify murder? That's so much BS. And what's worse, is there are haters who would probably go to crap like that. What kind of message is justifiable murder just because your beliefs say it's okay to kill those you hate. Murder is murder. I can't believe people would follow that crap and that jerk-off will bank on hatred.

...no wonder some people are so screwed up in the head.

You can bet I'll be at that protest if it comes to my state.

For some reason, it's really entertaining to think that this guy could get this far. Oh, you have to love people's ignorance.

Seriously, I kind of think this is funny.

I don't mean to resort to stereotypes when I say this but you would think that an artist coming from a country known for its laid-back demeanour would not be so riled up about this. Or, at least not to this extent.
But then one must must wonder where the phrase "Kill Whitey!!!" came from.

What's next, "Kill Poonanie!!!"?

Beenie Man has "one of the top 10 albums of 2004"

This here is a real shame

Now I am not gay, but my sexuality is beside the point. A man who feels this strongly against gays needs to be shunned by anyone and everyone, until he either fades into oblivion, or changes his opinions, and the second option just isn't going to happen. The fact that he lives in a place where these feelings are common is a reason, but *not* an excuse. He needs to learn to keep his mouth shut when he comes to places like the U.S. and the U.K. where the majority of people do not share his views. I think, and sincerely hope, that you had no idea of his previous hateful preaching prior to mentioning him in your article. I hope this is the last time Beenie Man gets any favorable mention in the media.

I remember there was an incident on 'The Word' involving this very issue. The only problem is that I can't actually remember if it was Beenie Man who was involved.
'The Word', for those of you who don't know, was an entertainment show which used to be shown late Friday nights on Channel 4 in the early 1990's. It had somewhat of a cult following and ran for several years before it was cancelled.
Anyway, I remember an instance where a rap artist was being interviewed on the show and he expressed some outragously homophobic slurs. As a result he almost got into a fist-fight with presenter Mark Lamaar who told him (quite rightly) that his views were "a load of shit". Mark Lamaar went up considerably in my estimation when I saw that. Normally TV presenters just kiss their guests arses. They way he stood up to this guy was truly admirable.
The only problem is that I can't remember if the rapper in question was Beenie Man or Shabba Ranks (remember him?!). This has been bothering me for a while. If anyone who saw that episode could set me straight (boom-tsh! ) I'd appreciate it.

Oh, btw, I read a short interview with Beenie Man in Q magazine earlier this year in which he professed to having absolutely no problem with gay men because it meant that there were more women for him.
Take that to mean whatever you want. Personally, based on the evidence, I think he was lying.

I was thinking about that when they met him in Germany - he sure isn't gay-friendly. Are there any Jamaican etc singers that are actually gay friendly?! I'm yet to hear of one.

Apache Indian sang a song called 'AIDS Warning' which - as you may have guessed from the title - was about the prevention of HIV and AIDS. I'll try'n look up the lyrics if you want. It's been a long time since I listened to the track. I don't remember him making any reference to the gay community, degrogatory or otherwise, but it makes a change from most rappers insisting that AIDS is God's punishment to gay people!

He really only had 2 chart hits. The biggest was called 'Boom-Shak-A-Lak' or something. It got into the top 5 back in 1994. 'Arranged Marriage' was another quite successful song of his. The latter was on his 'No Reservations' album - the same album that featured 'AIDS Warning'.

Ok, I found the lyrics. Keep in mind this guy is Jamaican (or at least claims to be) so sometimes he is kind of hard to decipher. You'll probably need a translator to figure most of this out!

'AIDS Warning' - by Apache Indian

Say you listen when me talk original Arawak
Say the AIDS it a gwarn and we have fe stop that
Hear them talk bout the coke
Hear them talk bout the crack
Talk bout heroin cha! we no wan that
When me chat fe the Indian, white and the black
But you listen when me come and start fe attack
All the idiot them that love fe be slack
Say them have fe wipe out mon off this ya map
Ca the AIDS it gwarn and me wan none of that
And when me chat this ya one say me chat non stop

This is a warning fe each and everyone
You have fe no bout the AIDS upon the island
This is a warning fe all the youth them
Listen raggamuffin Indian a tell them

Me say me talk and a talk and you hear when me gwarn
When you hear fe me voice mon through the Steel horn
Me have fe take out a minute and a couple second
Fe tell all the mon and tell all woman
Next time you hold a partner feel the vibes strong
Make sure two of uno take the precaution
When you reach fe your pocket take out your condom
And from you use that nothing can go wrong
But if you never bring it listen when me talking
Forget about the Doogoo, Doogoo, Doogoo sin-thing

This is a warning fe each and everyone
You have fe no bout the AIDS upon the island
This is a warning fe all the youth them
Listen raggamuffin Indian a tell them

Bout you have 2 woman, a nothin that
Bout you have 3 woman, a nothin that
Bout you think you are don, a nothin that
You have no condom, a nothin that
And the gal them a gwarn, a nothin that
Bout them have a next mon, a nothin that
And a loba loba, a nothin that
That him last longer, a nothin that
You fe one partner and a keep healthy
No bother go round go round with a next somebody
And take a needle push it in your body
You fe hear what a gwarn mon listen keenly
Then there will be no fight and will be no fuss
How the kids got born with the virus

This is a warning fe each and everyone
You have fe no bout the AIDS upon the island
This is a warning fe all the youth them
Listen raggamuffin Indian a tell them

Next time you find a gal say soorni logthi
And your mind tell you mon fe check the curi
Before you would a worry bout she mum and daddy
Mon and she big brother mon wide him hockey
But now you have fe start think about a next problem
If she have the virus, here when me tell them
So you have fe careful and a watch what a gwarn
Ca the AIDS could a come and a lik anyone

No mention of gay people but that's better than him being abusive towards us (which he easily could have been, given the subject matter).
