Safety tips for women

I was sent this by email (on a mailing list):
----------------------------------------------------
Please take the time to read this. I know you are smart enough to know these pointers but there will be some, where you will go "hmm I must remember that".

After reading this, forward it to someone you care about. It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!

2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans: If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you.... chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy... The driver won't see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives...

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.

5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:

A.) Be aware: ALWAYS look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat.

B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the
passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.

C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).

7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!

8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

Another Safety Point: Beware of the sounds of a Crying Baby

Someone reported that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her "Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, "We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night.

Please pass this on! and DO NOT open the door for a crying baby. This e-mail should probably be taken seriously because the Crying Baby theory was mentioned on America's Most Wanted this past Saturday when they profiled the serial killer in Louisiana.

I'd like you to forward this to all the women you know. It may save a life. A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle. I was going to send this to the ladies only, but guys, if you love your mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, etc., you you may want to pass it onto them, as well.

Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it and it's better safe than
sorry.

Yeah, I have seen those tips before and I think they are really good! Something to think off next time you leave the house (although I never do, haha)

Hm, I copied it and sent it to my cousin and three female friends I do care about - I think the tips are good. Thanks.
Sadly you never know what cretins are walking around in this word.

That reminds me of Bowling for Columbine documentary. It said that american society is build on fear. They keep feeding it to people on the news 24/7 so they'd be afraid and paranoid, which would consequeltly make them buy more inffluenced by adds and commercials. Marylin Manson even said that this it's an industry of fear and consumption: the more you're afrad from hearing about everyday horrors from the news, the more you'll be susceptive to consuption of useless goods.

This mail seems just like one small bit from a large plan of mass paranoia.

Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

freddie, you sound like my parents Apparently the world is safer than it has ever been. I don't know if that's true, but I don't completely trash the idea of it.

But it's quite normal to show bad things on TV. What would the news be without some murder and rape? "Well today is a sunny day and everything is okay".. They can't say that on the news because it would be too boring, no viewers blah blah..

People want to hear what interests them, and I guess violence does.. Just look at all the action movies and videogames!

I don't know if it's only in America.. But anyways, I have noticed USA can be quite sick. I feel much hate especially for those damnass parents who want to ban Eminem but don't take good care of their kids. If you don't want your children to listen to Eminem, then make them stop! YOU should be the one who is in control of your child.. And still think of how USA is full of violence I laugh in the face of George W. Bush

But I live by the motto (Actually I don't.. ) "Nothing is for sure"... Maybe I get killed tomorrow, or maybe I win the lottery.. Who knows right?

You're right slavic sistah! Of course they should report about that as well, but they are going overboard (I mean the americans) and want to portray it as a big battlefield wheter it really is or not. Exaggeration is the key. But I agree that there's nothing wrong with video games, movies nor Eminem... they are just scapegoats of a hypocritic society. when the real problem lies in the "real" news and the spereading of fear.

freddie, yeaaah exactlay! I'm so glad we share the same opinion.. People just make the world look more dangerous than it is.. Yes, I might get attacked by a dog.. Yes, I can get raped.. But what am I to do? Stay home all my life? Anything could happen! Maybe my computer blows up for no reason and I die.. And let's not forget about cancer.. Apparently I can get cancer from EVERYTHING these days.. I think we should just calm down a little.. Has any of you ever been abducted by aliens?! What about... someone coming into your house and stabbing you with a knife? TV makes these things "normal" and something we "should expect".. Well, hell! I don't wanna live in fear!

This may be true but when I read the statistics that say that 1 out of 3 women has been sexually abused including rape I think it's better that women keep some things in mind, for example when getting the car out of the garage etc..
As long as there are such numbers as the one mentioned above tips on security may help avoiding those numbers to get higher. There's no proof for it but I'd rather be sure that my female friends and family members know about this.

One example: My university lies kinda outside of the city and in the middle of a little wood and there had been many cases of raped women until the university decided to put masses of information-material out and close the area for cars after 9 o'clock, since then the numbers went rapidly down.
Information can help.

Rob - yeah, mass information does help.

good thread ypsidan04!!

on this campus there are many cases of sexual harassment, rape, and abuse. there is an escort service at time where you call the service and they send someone to walk you home. i haven't used it but it's a good thing to have.

Thanks for tips ypsidan04! I like to go for a walks in the evenings and at nights. I know it`s silly to walk alone in the dark. But I never have my Cd or cassette player with me, cos if I listen to music, I cannot hear if someone walks behind me.

This statistics is true. Unfortunately, in at least half cases, women are actually raped by someone they know. Rapes are like murders, in a lot of cases the perpetrator is in fact known by the victim. The victim never suspected that the nice guy she knew was going to attack her, until it was too late.

I'm sorry to say something so *not* reassuring, but it's sadly the truth.

Of course that doesn't mean those safety tips are not good, far from it.

I agree with Rob taht there actualy is danger but what is wrong if that danger starts to consume people and take over their lives so that they live in fear constantly. That's what that mail said: "Better to be paranoied then dead!" But it's NOT OK to be paranoied. What kind of a life is this when you have to constantly look over your shoulder for a rapist or a murderer. You have less chances to be raped or murdered then you have of being hit by a car or being involved in an accident while traveling in one. And people don't go to classes learning how to dodge a car do they? And they don't drive any safer either.
I also agree with Haku that most violance originates from people that victims know and trust (even inside a family).
Like Queenie said: "I don't wanna live in fear!" Don't live in fear! That's not living at all!

i think the problem isn't providing defense for women, although that is much needed these days. i believe it's men who are the root. i'm against violence against women, and the facts presented are horrifying. men need to learn to respect women, even if she says "no." violence just shouldnt be the default response..

The problem is people generally have to find the so called "golden middle", means not exaggerating to one direction. Same goes for this issue, women should be aware that theoretically bad things can happen and that it's better in certain situations to act the "safe" way, but it's surely wrong to become paranoid - as this would indeed mean practically no life at all.

By the way what Lux said is quite right. But even by the threat of law people still do what they wanna do. The education (in the family as well in school) is in my opinion one of the most important points when it comes to violence.

The sad thing is that people can't seem to find that middle way. It's all leaning towards excessive paranoia.

Well, I think this was written the way it was *not* to make people overly afraid but to try and wake people up and make them pay attention.

For the most part, that e-mail is basically telling people to pay more attention to their surroundings. Which is a good idea, in my opinion.
