Best / Worst LGBT Movies…

I was thinking the other day (I do that a lot)... there aren't any good lesbian movies out there. On the other hand there are a lot of bad ones. Why? Who knows! There's so much material out there for a good angsty story a la Fucking Amal. Hope we finally see some lesbian block-busters in 2005.

Anyway... here's a list of my favourite movies with lesbian content followed my the ones I found most annoying and finally the ones that imply lesbianism but never actually say it out loud:


The good:

1. FUCKING AMAL - SUCH a huge classic in the making. And an inspiration for Tatu!

2. BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER - Hillarious, and drool-y (clea duvall *drools*

3. BOUND - One of the rare lesbian flicks that doesn't revolve completely around the lesbian issue. It's basically a mafia story, about two girls who decide to rip-off a bunch of career criminals (one is a husband of lesbian #1), while they fall in love along the way. Nice, exciting movie spiced up with same-sex pleasures. Gina Gershon... mmmmm.



The Bad:

1. KISSING JESSICA STEIN - Maybe it had good intentions, but it came of as a "girls are into girls only when guys let them down" flick.

2. THE TRUTH ABOUT JANE - This movie gives a new meaning to the term 2 dimensional. Stereotyes get two legs each and walk around in the shape of human beings. But they're not, really alive. They just LOOK human. While in reality they're all just an empty sack of exaggerated nonsence prejudices. Not just about lesbians. About people in general. This goes in the same category as Sly Stallone doing comedy (remember "Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot"!!? )

3. BETTER THEN CHOCHOLATE - Of course they falll in love eternally, she can't tell her mom, blah, blah, blah... she has to prove her lesbianism and love towards her gf by facing this cruel world, we're living in...*yawns* If this movie was a car it would be a VW Golf.



The ugly... I mean ambiguous:

1. FRIED GREEN TOMATOES - it's implied in the book that Idgy is a lesbian
2. THELMA AND LABI...I mean LOUISE - Go girls, go!! Take eachothers hand and flyyyyyy over that cliff. On the wings of love!


Add some more to each category. I hope I can rememeber some more as well.

You know, when I saw the title of this thread this movie was first thing that poped in my mind.

Three of Hearts 2 women, 1 man and various combination of thereof.
Threesome 2 men, 1 woman and combination of thereof.

Plus both have one Baldwin in them.

There are some bad ones out there. I have heard that the worst lesbian movie of all time is Bar Girls. I, unfortunately, haven't had the opportunity to see this though I wish I could. (I get a sadistic sense of pleasure from watching bad films.)

The one bad lesbian film I have seen is She Hate Me. Yes, that is the title of the movie. Spike Lee shows us once again how much he doesn't understand women.
The film includes lesbians trying desparately to get pregnant via coaxing some guy to give out his sperm.
And how does he do this? By fucking the living daylights out of them, you know, they way all lesbians want to do it. And boy do they enjoy doing it too, and I mean really enjoy it, because at the end of the day, every lesbian just wants to get screwed by a man.

Question:
What constitutes a good lesbian film?
-One that is just a good film in itself and features lesbians in its main storyline? or;
-One that has a happy ending for the lesbians in it?

I am asking because a lot of the lesbian flicks I like do not have happy endings.
I think we can all agree that a bad lesbian film is a film that reinforces ugly stereotypes of lesbains. Right?

I agree with you about the other ones except this one. Better than Chocolate has to be one of my all time favorites. It's totally satirical and I love that. To each they're own, I guess.

I used to think Fucking Amal was a masterpiece but now I don't like it that much. Does anyone think Clea Duvall looks scary? I think she looks scary.

I have no comment on this issue...i haven't seen most of hte movies on ur list, the only one i can talk about is Lost and Delerious, which i have seen and can i say...EW to Mischa Barton?

...Tho there's a lot of funny involved in 'but im a cheerleader'...lot of funny = good in my books...as long as u don't compromise the story. The use of wiold and sexy surreal colours was also a kewl move

Lesbian movies usually end badly to reinforce the angst and add to the tragedy. Though it's definitely not a neccessary ingrediant of a good lesbian movie. "Bound" had a happy ending (evenough it wasn't a lesbian movie per se), so did "Fucking Amal".

The worst of the worst lesb flix are the ones who not only reinforce ugly stereotypes, but rather though who deny the existance of lesbians at all. Like that Spike Lee movies. They're only lesbians cause they haven't found Mr. Right, yet.

i think tipping the velvet is one of good lesbian movie. nan has just realize shes gay when she saw kitty butler and attracted to her, there when her adventure began. it's a good series though, i bought the dvd and watched it twice LOL

Though the company skipped to make that part clear it's not left out totally. It's one of my favorite movies so I guess I'm baised.. hehe.

Heavenly Creatures - think the parts with their big fantasy world is a bit over the top at times. But the movie as a whole is good

many gay ppl think BETTER THEN CHOCHOLATE, FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, and THELMA AND LOUISE are good movies. that is, they interpret the movies to the culture of their orientation. such as, thelma and louise are very empowered women..and empowered women are more independent, which means they can break out of the box and see the light..i mean be attracted to other women. better than chocolate was fluffy and i've seen piece of fried green tomatoes so i wouldn't know. fucking amal was raw and kind of shocking, considering it's country of origin, time period, and subject matter. what else what else anyone seen wild things 3? a great lesbian film. LMAO jk. the incredible true story of two girls in love..purple velvet, i can't think of anything else despite the many i've seen.

Ive seen:
Lost & Delirious - great, powerful, emotional film
Better than chocolate - lesbian classic, funny and cute
Bound - only thing i can say is Gina Gershon is fucking hot!
Gia - based on real life! Angelina was smoking in that film! full frontal shot as well mmm
My Summer of Love - British les flick.
But Im a Cheerleader - fuckin hiliarious, great camp movie
