Not impossible, yet the Bosnian song got high votings all over the place, because the song was good - and it was very ethnical. But other songs that were sucky only got high points from the neighbour-countries. It's a fact that they give out sympathy-votes to the neighbour-countries - More now than ever before. Our narrator could say who got 10 and 12 from half of the countries before they told us.

I think it could be a mix of the two tho.

That Silvina Knight chick might just have acted it out. I mean, no one is THAT insane. Maybe it was all just a big joke no one really got. If so then it was a genuine kaufman-esque performance.

As far as the langauge discusson goes I'm still firmly convinced a good song can win regardless of the language. What you need to understand is that a lot of Eurovision viewers are older population - 50 and above - and chances are 80% of those people don't even speak english, so it wouldn't make any difference to them as to what language the song's been sung in. The Serbian entry was second last year and the Bosnian one was 3rd this year. And I have no illusions serbo-croatian language is THAT melodic or kind to the ear. They were just good songs. As simple as that.

Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Totally agreed, but interestingly at this ESC it did not greatly alter the ranking in the top positions. I made some statistics to eliminate some language, ethnic and political artefacts and the top 4 positions remained the same. Only Romania came very close to Bosnia, the ex-soviet countries Lithuania, Ukraina and Armenia dropped, and Greece came close to Sweden at rank 6.

Iintriguing was that Romania has a definite neighbour problem. The slavic countries voted considerably below the average for them.

Summa summarum, the countries on the top positions deserved it, whatever personal opinions we have!

Yeah, I do agree on that. The 5-6 in the lead got points from all over the place and didn't really need sympathy votes. They deserved what they got. But we're also talking about the 10 finalist positions. They can be quite juicy for some. Anyways, I don't really mind Norway going through semi-finals next year. That means alot of extra media-exposure. As you see, most of the leading songs went through the semi-final; Finland, Russia, Lithuenia, Bosnia, Sweden (however I think Carola would suck alotta votes anyways) ... to mention some. This have been the case the last years after they introduced the semi-final-rule. So yeah, I think it's a good thing.

Aye she did, and very well too. I enjoyed it. Hehehe. Even the song hit the nail straight on the head It sucked, but that was the point. And you gotta love the nice gimp-masks on the two guys jumping through those screens. Hahahaha.

Ágústa Eva Erlendsdóttir actually looks very cute when not playing the role of Silvia Night.

Silvia Night was great I voted for her in the semifinal. She had the same idea as the Lithuanians had - to parodize the whole Eurovision stuff, but in my opinion she carried it out in more sophisticated and elaborated way. She was a real postmodernist kitsch

Lithuanians were also a parody and it's so ironic that they made such a high place.
And the most funny thing I saw in Estonian TV. People were interviewed in Helsinki, about their feelings that they have won Eurovision. An guess what - some guys were jumping and singing the Lithuanian song - "We are the winners of Eurovision!!!"

I'm not surprised if this song will become an anthem of the Eurovision winners.

It's contagious isn't it? Mr Lordi himself sang it in the press conference after that final.

Oh well, if you read some coverage on the Finnish victory arrival to Helsinki, the fans there were singing "We are the winners of Eurovision". I think it might become a classic thingie for Euro.

P.S. People there thought Lordi's song was too complicated to sing off hand.

I think the Lithuanians got such a high place because they were a piss-take. The UK gave Finland 12 points and Lithuania 10 points. That says it all. Silvia Night's problem was that her humour was too sophisticated and people didn't get what she was doing. The Eurovision audience isn't subtle.

Maybe funny yes, but is that what you consider intelligent and sophisticated?

Quote:
During her presence in Athens, and according to her role's character, Silvia behaved provocatively and rudely to technicians and journalists, calling them “fucking amateurs”. In addition she was particularly mean to the Greek people shouting on stage "Fuck you, You Fucking retarts" The participants, not knowing that Silvia Night was actually there as a performed role and not as the actual person, mistook her behaviour for real. The media criticised and attacked the singer, thinking that she is actually problematic and rude (a reaction similar to how she was first received in her country before becoming famous). She also threatened to sue the journalist (calling her 'slut'), TV station and the competition for 'spreading lies' about her that she hated Greeks. During the press conference she ordered the journalists not to look her in the eyes. One of them did and she ordered her bodyguard to take her out. The bodyguard obeyed and carried the "journalist" (who by the way was an actress, part of the "show") on his shoulders.

Another controversy is the English lyrics to her Eurovision song, “Congratulations”. On the first verse the lyrics go “The vote is in, they say I win”, however in the video and at rehearsals she sang “The vote is in, I'll fucking win”. According to Eurovision rules, songs shouldn't contain swearwords. [2] Silvía Nótt has personally responded on her website, that she will “fucking say what [she] fucking [wants]”. In the preliminary contest on May 18 she did not use the expletitive, and said “freaking” instead. In her appearance for the semi-finals, a great part of the audience and artists from the other countries reacted by booing her not tolerating her supposedly provocative and unprofessional behavior.
Having said that, she finished 2nd best non qualifier, so of course some people saw the joke. Pretty high considering the song was pure crap, at least Lithuania's has a bit of rhythm. Oh excuse me, it wasn't about the songs, I know.

Spyretto, your ears need cleaning out if you think 'We Are Winners' was better musically than 'Congratulations'. Her song was making a similar joke to the Lithuanian one, but in a much cleverer way too.

Much better, musically...I'd say it was anthemic, it had a little bit of " We Will Rock You" in it - in a bad way, of course. "Congratulations", musical? since when was squealing considered musical? she was totally irritating, pathetic may I add. She couldn't sing. Take away the content the song itself was one of those pathetic numbers that do absolutely nothing every year. ( they usually come from Iceland )
Yes, she was making fun in a more well-thought way than Lithuania - wouldn't say sophisticated, She didn't deserve to be booed, of course, her stage act was really good. But if you think either of the two songs deserved to qualify, then it's your ears that need to be checked, not mine.
Finally, lyrics in the mold of "we will win Eurovision, blah blah"...have been done before in the contest, so they didn't break any new ground in that regard.
Of course you can say whatever you want about how cool all those tacky acts were, and I wouldn't have much to say as there was not much at all musical about Athens. As I said, musically the worst contest in recent memory.

Kate Ryan didn't qualify though she had a perfectly musical number. Why? simply because people like you are taking the piss by voting for acts like Lithuania's and Iceland's. The UK does the same thing every single year when voting. They were first to vote for Alf freaking Poier and that German bald dude, whatever his name is. So lets decide if we want to have a musical show or a show were shitty acts are taking the piss at Eurovision. As if it made any sense anyway.
