It's an annual festival in Japan, it's about fertility and stuff, there's a temple with a steel penis where people make wishes, women ride big wooden penises for good luck, health, and fertility (it's customary to have your picture taken on one of those), there's also penis lollipops and smaller penis statues that you can bring home.

The comment is fake, i actually remember that accident, it happened during an air show about 20 years ago, the plane was not at all automated LOL, quite the contrary, it was fully on manual as the pilot had disengaged securities to show off.

Not neccesarily fake. I don't think he meant "fully-automated" as in pilot-less. He may be refering to the amazing AI level Airbus's onboard comp had (for 1988) and how most decisions - apart for steering - are in the hands of computers. At least that's how I understood it.

You have to see that from a Japanese and Shintoist point of view, for them it's just a celebration of natural forces, they don't see anything disgusting there. People go there with the whole family, from kids to grandparents, and everybody eats those penis-lollipops since they are considered 'good luck candy'.
For the Japanese such a festival is as 'normal' as the Easter festival for the Christian church (but of course Christianity being all about guilt, shame, and repression, the ambience is quite different, lol).
