Talking How is Siskia pronounced?

Okay, so I've either been called bitch OR Siskia since I was born.

freddie insists it's pronounced She-shkee-ya, but I was born with the damn name and I've always heard it pronounced as Sees-kee-ya. Based on "Siskia" just written, what do you guys think it's pronounced as? Because he's Slavic, as well I am, and he insists Slavs name my name like that... but I have ALWAYS been called like I am saying I am...

I know it's an idiotic question but he's managed to confuse me about my own name.

Well, *I* have been pronouncing it in my head the way you do. The funny thing is I've been meaning to ask you how you pronounced it.

And honestly, with names you can pronounce them any way you want.

It's funny, I've had people argue with me about how to say my name was well. They say it's supposed to be said like "Free-da". I say it's "Fred-da". In fact, my name used to be spelled with just one d, and pronounced as "Fred-ah". But *Nobody* said it right, so my parents changed my name when I was a kid, adding the d.

Not that it helped.

Parrish

Siskia? Where did you get that from? There's the Greek "Sikia" but I think it's more about gay guys..although it could be for girls too.
"siskia" and "sikia", hehe
I thought the word was "sterva" actually ( from Lilja 4-ever, )
Сука ( where does the stress go? to the y or the a? )

darje, Don't kill me but for a Russian ear both She-shkee-ya and Sees-kee-ya sound confusing. It always happens when different languages meet somewhere. Anyway if I saw it on a paper and would try to pronounce it I'd say Sees-kee-ya. Definitely.

Hey, and I'm slavic too.

queenbee, you get my drift!! LOL. Yes, Siskja is more like it. Maybe that makes more sense for forre? Does it?

spyretto, I think my dad took Saskia (which for all I know is a Slavic name) and just replaced the a. ^_^

Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

darje, There are Siskia Mountains and another region called by this name.

Quote:
Also contains an early description of the Siskiyou mountains. The author and his wife, as part of a group of emigrants, traveled through the "Siskia" [Siskiyous] in 1846. The author's comments indicate that the origin of the name was unknown to them: "On the following morning we commenced ascending a mountain usually known as the Siskia Mountains, I know not why it is so called. It was very high and steep, and the ascent was exceedingly difficult" (Vol. 1, p. 197). From Thornton's description it is apparent that "Siskia" was a name used by Jesse Applegate: "All that we knew of the mountain, was vague and uncertain. Applegate had mentioned it by name, indeed, and had spoken of the ascent as being short and easy. But this--like almost everything he had said of the road--we learned, by sad and painful experience, to be untrue" (Vol. 1, p. 198).
Besides, this name is used oftener by Germans than any other nation. There's a version Saskia too, more frequently used.

Just ask your dad where he did get the idea from.

I change my opinion to sheesh-kee-ya.

The main idea of my theses was that -s should be -sh, nothing else.
