Yea, the newer one that you are referring to is the version that Stephen King actually did himself. He wasn't all that satisfied with the way Stanley Kubrick did the first one. King was especially not happy that Kubrick didn't emphasize the alcoholism in the movie as much as King did in the book. King, in reality, used to have quite a drinking problem.
So, Stephen King made his own version--which I have not saw yet and really want to--that was a made-for-tv movie, which is why it is so long.
The book is just do dang good! Because, although it does deal with the supernatural, it's really not very unrealistic. I'm about 3/4 the way through it and this is my second time reading it. lol
