I'm just used to having a base first and then playing around with it. Also, the bigger the picture is, the slower does my computer work lol.
If you were to add text or something to the avatar later, you should shrink it first, otherwise the text will turn out blurry if you re-size the picture *after* you've put the text there (just a tip
).
