No fish left in seas by 2050
 

An international team of scientists has just released a major study showing that sea resources will be completely depleted within 50 years.

1. The scientists should learn to extrapolate! The graph is ridiculous!
2. Not even 10 % of the ocean is explored and they have such a good estimate what will be in the future?
3. The scientists very likely will be dead in 2050, so they don't need to worry about people telling them that they were mistaken! They can predict pretty everything without losing their reputation.

On the other hand, if nobody does anything to preserve the most valuable ressources of earth, we will face a desperate future.

We'll be growing fish like we do with cows. I don't see any problems in there at all. It's good though that they show is tendencies so we develop technology how to compensate the possible loss.

It's not so much a problem of having no fish to eat, it's more a problem of ecological balance. If certain fish are extinguished the food chain can be totally ruined. The biggest problem are the single-celled organisms. Some of them can even vary a greenhouse effect more than humans do, warm up the sea waters considerably, poison millions of square-kilometers of ocean surface +++

Ecological balance is constantly changing. Some breeds are always disappearing. It's normal.

It's possible they're underestimating the ability of fish population to regenerate. Fish usually breed in horrendous amounts. I doubt we could completely erradicate all sea-food even if we tried. It's like trying to erradicate mosquitos or flies.

All studies of such kind always preach about a near future day of doom of some kind. They predicted the same about the CO2-problems tens of years ago, and none of the problems they talked about then have occured. Of course, there are signs that tells us not everything is correct, but still they're not anywhere near what some had expected; the earth is simply extremely adaptable. It moves on and does perfectly fine (I'm not saying it doesn't have a limit tho). So I believe this to be much the same. Man has always predicted the worst kinds of scenarios to happen, but they rarely or never do. I'm not worried about this at all.

Meh... I might be TOO indifferent about these things tho :laugh: I just think we should do what's reasonable without going over our heads with doomsday scenarios all the time :)

Personally i don't think this study is bullshit.

I live in a coastal region and my parents have seen local species disappear in their lifetime. I grew up in the port of Cherbourg and fishing used to be an important activity there, but in the 70's, fishing areas that had been providing fish for centuries became empty from over-fishing and the the activity collapsed.
I remember when i was a kid, there was a running joke that if you went to a fish shop in the morning, they would tell you they didn't have any fish because the train from Paris hadn't arrived yet. Of course it wasn't exactly true, firstly because fish arrived by trucks from Paris, but it was meant to say that in the old days you would find all kinds of fish in shops early in the morning as soon as fishing boats would be back in the port, wheras now you have to wait for the delivery from Paris to arrive.

There are many areas in the world where fish have already disappeared, and they're not coming back, even decades after fishing has stopped, so something is definitely wrong.
Today we have ultramodern fishing boats with satellite tracking of fish stocks, they have giant nets that catch everything (whether we eat it or not) in several cubic kms of water at once leaving absolutely nothing alive behind them (what modern fishing boats do is the equivalent of destroying an entire forest and everything that lives in it just because you wanna catch a few boars), and yet they catch less fish than the traditional boats of last centuy… This should tell us something.

I agree with Haku. People catch everything. We don't catch just what we need. Has someone ever notices just how much food we throw away? It's a waste of fish, animals, and other stuff. Why do we do that? We have to be more careful. We can't just continue to ruin the earth and think that this has no consequences..
