I'm not all knowing about computers or anything, but since there are some questions coming up from time to time, it could be fun to help out when there were problems about computer related stuff.
And I'm sure that someone on the forum knows the answer to a problem if there should be any. In case I don't.

About missing codecs or problems with videofiles:
go to: http://avicodec.duby.info/
Download AVIcodec v1.1.0.4 - run the file.
...
When the file has been opened in the AVIcodec program it should tell you what codecs there are missing, and provide a link to where to get them too.. Never tried it though. But looks like some of the codecs could be updated at my computer too.. so I'll get that done in a sec.

Any questions - do ask. I'll try my best to help out.

Oooh I love this thread :D And it's not because I get so many problems with my computer :lalala:

Well let's see.. Stupid IE re-directs me to some toolbar.com crap when the page cannot be found.. what do I do about that??

LMAO.. backup team needed already
*hint ask about Paint Shop Pro or something*
Actually I have the exact same problem. It used to work better. Now I get redirected to perfectnav or something all the time.
I'll see what I can do.. :lalala:

Edit:
Ok I found out why I have the problem at least:
"Perfect Nav is an application that is bundled with the Free Ad Supported version of Kazaa Media Desktop. Perfect Nav can be removed when Kazaa is uninstalled."
:none:

Anyway if this is not the case at your computer go to:
Functions -> Internet settings - Advanged
In the buttom: choose "don't search from adress bar" (or similar, since I run the Danish version of Explorer)

Oh btw, the only thing people can ask me about is probably Photoshop and HTML-language..

queenie : still searching for a solution for you. its hard to make suggestions without actually being in front of the damned pc at times unfortunately :( cause a lot depends on what people have installed on their pcs in the first place.

TLFdk's solution sounds like it will work tho !

yeah.. and with the stupid perfect nav I had installed my solution didn't work. Now I installed another version of kazaa and removed the old one, and the adress bar works like it should

for all the crap websites put on your computer ( like spyware, toolbar and all that shite - they should be prosecuted for invasion of privacy but anyhow ) can try a program called ad-aware which will find many spyware programs and remove them.
It doesn't remove all though as some creep into and make changes on the registry so you need some program that will find those and remove them. I use a program called "registry mechanic" which is quite good.

Try those two Queenbee and your computer will be releaved ;)

For codecs you need the wmp 8,9 codecs, Divx, and Xvid as well as a DVD playback program that will install the mpeg-2 codec. That's all I use and they're sufficient. Those codec packs like Nimo are not recommened on the basis of being particularly crappy.

I have some program that my dad installed for me, which also has a registry tool, and so a registry cleaner.. It's good. Oooh, I totally forgot about ad-aware... Thanks for reminding me spyretto. :rose:

Thank you for listing the page being posted.. From their site:
How do I remove Lop.com as my start page?

This depends on what browser you are using:
-If you are using Internet Explorer, click on tools (in the upper portion of your screen), then click Internet options. In the homepage section, type the address you want to use as your homepage, then click "OK". Then click "Ok" and you are done.

-if you are using Netscape Navigator, Using the Netscape Edit menu, go to Preferences. Within Preferences, select the Navigator category. In the Navigator Starts With section, choose Home Page. Type whatever address you want to use as your homepage in the Home Page Location box, and click on OK.

How did Lop.com become my search engine?

This could happen one of several ways.
You could have clicked the 'make start page' link on the main Lop.com webpage.

You could have downloaded and installed one of our many software applications. In the terms and conditions of any of our software products it is clearly stated that we grant you a free license to use the software and by installing the software on your computer you agree to use our search services in your web browser. Any and all changes made to your system are clearly stated in the terms and conditions and are fully uninstallable via the 'Help' then 'uninstall' option on any of our software applications. Additionally a separate uninstall program may be downloaded here (http://lop.com/new_uninstall.exe)
(from: link to site (http://www.thko.com/help.html))

Perhaps the uninstaller listed will work? I hope it will. Otherwise perhaps one of the listed programs will do the trick
Ad-aware (http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10214379.html?tag=lst-0-1) - freeware

edit: What the hell is spyware? Doesn`t sound good...
It't not the best thing in the world for sure..
Take GAIN for exampel.. doesn't do anything to the computer itself. But it follows you while you surf the net and popups up "interesting" "useful" ads all the time, since they are remotely related to the stuff you are looking at.
Have to locate a full description somewhere.. it's not a cool thing for sure ;)

Sometimes you can't even change the start page on your internet browser, I mean you change it and then it's back. If this happens use those programs to locate the parasites and remove them. Look for viruses too, there are viruses which are installed and then open a lot more ad pages and all sorts of crap. Another trick is to restore the registry to a previous time but do that only as a last resort because some programs you didn't have before may need to be reinstalled. ( to restore registry open "run" type scanreg /restore )

But with the combination of registry cleaner, parasite remover, virus killer you should be alright.

So you surf the internet at work you lucky b... ;)
Here something like that would never happen, the boss would be all over you to ensure that you work as a slave and never do something else. You can do that on your tea break (10 minutes) or your lunch break (35 minutes ) That's why this country is still doing well, everybody works as a slave.
Not me though, I live off the money of other people...well, not exactly but anyway :p

It really happened to me, I mean the comp was so screwed up, I was changing the start page and the itn was popping back. I thought wtf..it must have been some kind of virus.

use kazaalite, as the others said. It's exactly the same without the spyware. Even better: use emule ;)

I will think I will be needing this thread quite a lot as I am a total technophobe ! Many thanks.

I've been hearing about 2 new anti-tatu viruses. One is supposed to obliterate any files with the word Tatu in them. Is this possible ? Has anyone else heard about them ?

haven't heard anything about them.. sounds disturbing. My harddrive be a goldmine then.
Anyway catch up with the latest threats at: http://www.norton.com/
I think it could be possible to create such a virus.. but if someone will actually do, so I don't know.

Just keep your antivirus program updated :) and install a firewall. I run Norton in both cases.

Hmm well I was born with computers and have quite a bit of experience... I'll be here to help. :)

TLFdk, Norton is decent when it comes to virus protection. For firewall protection (which is virtually [excuse the pun] a must-have for interntet users esp. TCP/IP), what I use and would recommend is BlackIce. For Windows, it can be found at www.networkice.com/ This is what I use. It's relatively cheap and is great software for protecting a PC from infiltration I also hear Sygate Firewall is good too.

If you have networked computers, or just want additional protection, you can buy additional hardware. Sometimes these industrial-strength firewalls actually have computers built in, but often they're little more than a fancy box containing circuits and chips. Firewalls built that way are far more reliable than firewalls based on computers. Recently, a new kind of hardware firewall has started to catch on. This kind of Internet barrier is designed for homes and small offices, and usually includes an Internet-sharing function. These dual-purpose firewalls generally cost between $100 and $200 and can be hooked up in a couple of minutes. They're controlled through a Web browser and don't require any particular kind of computer "downwind" of the Internet connection. In other words, these Internet-sharing firewalls work fine whether you have Windows PCs or Macs on your home or office network. (And they also work perfectly with Linux PCs and Unix computers, too. :))
A few months ago I bought such a device to provide a hardware firewall for my home network. It's an EtherFast Cable/DSL Router, one of two or three models in the EtherFast Router line from Linksys, at http://www.linksys.com/. Mine can connect eight computers to the Internet through a single Internet hookup, with all Internet traffic passing through the EtherFast Router's built-in firewall.
The model I bought has the basic functions of a network hub but does them in a smart way. Leaving out the technical stuff, I'll simply explain that a hub serves as the central connection point for a standard network. All the computers on a normal Ethernet network are connected to the hub, and everything that is supposed to go to one computer goes to all computers.
Hubs are dumb, and there's nothing in the way a hub-based network operates that steers data to the right location. Information gets bounced around from computer to computer until the right computer grabs what it needs.
The Linksys device is a router. It steers the data in an intelligent way, eliminating a lot of the sluggishness you'll find in a typical peer-to-peer network. (Networks that don't have servers are "peer-to-peer" networks because each computer has equal ranking.)
This means adding the Linksys Etherfast Router can give your network a boost in all operations, regardless of any Internet activity. If your home or office network has three or more computers and uses a hub, the Linksys Router is almost guaranteed to speed things up. My own measurements showed a 20 to 25 percent speedup in most normal network operations.
The firewall works on its own, whether or not any of the computers on the network are functioning. Your network is protected around the clock.
You can customize the way the firewall works by typing the router's network address into a Web browser on any computer on the network. The router's configuration menu will appear in the browser. You have to type a password to be able to make changes.
The configuration menus also let you bar one or more of the computers on your network from all Internet access, if you'd like. You can even turn off the firewall entirely for one or more ports on any computer. Normally, this would be a bad idea, but it might be the only way to play interactive games such as Quake or Counter-Strike (anyone?) . (Be sure to turn the full firewall functions back on after the game is over.)

The End. :heh:

a few months ago i was on a website [britney spears :lalala:] and clicked on 'yes' on one of those pop up "do you want to dl this ..." windows...since then, i've been getting popups by the hundres and have two blockers

but still, things get screwed up like ...
- all of a sudden 40 popups will show up and then disappear
- i'll only be able to type in CAPS
- won't be able to type at all
- the keyboard gets screwed up in general i.e. the numbers will the be SHIFT characters by themselves
- if i'm on a website like this, and navigate anywhere, a new window opens up which gets annoying cause i navigate lots
- IE freezes ALL the time, or just disappears on its own OR an error message pops up and everything disappears
- typing again...if i type something random then windows that are open will close i.e. trillian
- things get highlighted randomly if the arrow is moved over them, or if something is scrolled up and down

that's all for now..
i have no idea why things are screwed up as they are, and not sure if it can even be fixed

THAT is what i get for staring at pics of britney instead of yulia. shame on me! such is the price of sacrilege :( :none:

*dies laughing* Who would be the stupid fuck to program such a virus? The guy must wank to Tatu. :P

People, to generalize:

Pop-up Blockers:
http://download.com.com/3000-7786-10246779.html?tag=lst-0-5 <<< Pop-Up Stopper Free Edition, it doesn't carry any spyware with itself and stops bugsome popups.

Spyware scanners:
http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10214379.html?tag=lst-0-3 <<< Ad-Aware.
http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10194058.html?tag=lst-0-4 <<< SpyBot (IMHO, better than Ad-Aware, has a simple interface and scans to the core, registry and robots).

Explorer Hijackers (that's what your page suddenly changing into another is called):
There are two solutions, the easy one and the computer registry one with which you don't want to mess unless you're big on moving REG key stuff (yes, I'm a Windows wuss. :D).

The easy one is to change to another explorer.

I have Mozilla and while it has problems reading certain kind of code (*cough*Frontpage's*cough*MicrosoftSucks*cough*),
it's good. http://www.mozilla.org/

Opera is also good, thought it has problems reading Javascript. http://www.opera.com/

Back into spyware: it doesn't contribute to keep your computer clean if you download a lot of freeware whose creators assumedly get financial support if you install something that comes along the program you just downloaded (per example, I dunno, an online clock-synchronizer which in my experience is worth crap and synchronizes nothing). In these cases, it's better to buy your software instead of downloading it.

(Can I be in the back up team too? Pwetty pwease with a chewwy on top?)

the easy one and the computer registry one with which you don't want to mess unless you're big on moving REG key stuff
Ok. Don't mess with your registry unles you are SURE you KNOW what you are doing! You can mess up you're entire OS if you aren't careful. But, sometimes hijacks go undetected by spyware detection programs and you might have to. If you aren't sure if you should delete it or not, don't. You can try asking me if the folder should be deleted, I can usually tell. Some things to look for are random folders where internet/personal files go, and the folders names should be filled with numbers, like 1316, or longer, like 124K08JH35.

Those are pretty good darje. I had found a pretty good online one not to long ago, I'll see if I can dig it up.
:) :heh:

Kappa
08-01-2004, 07:02
goku, generally a hijacker is a robot, right? But it must be disguised as something else because it sure as hell didn't show up in my SpyBot when I worked on IE. So how do you actually detect it?

rosh
08-01-2004, 07:50
another fairly good popup blocker is googles toolbar. its not spyware, its lets you do google searches without going to the google website and it allows you to block popups or allow them as you see fit :)

toolbar.google.com i believe is the place to download it.

for removing spyware ad-aware rules the freeware roost imho

goku, very interesting/useful infomattion about the the linksys router. Can you tell more detail about the firewall part of the rounter. If possible may I see the screen shot of the firewall configuration. thank you :rose:

I used SpyBot after going crazy with the GAIN, GATOR, XuPITER nCASE ..what else .. grrrr.....

SpyBot clean pretty well.. and I also "Immunized" the computer I felt peaceful after that ...
then I used CSWSchredder - to doublecheck -- more info --> (http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html) ..

....however still somehow .. yesterday .. the Xupiter managed to get into my computer again . somehow .. I must have clicked something somewhere accidently...

So I ran the SpyBot again and Immunized again .. then felt peaceful again . . thank you for this free program.

and just now I just scan my computer with AdWare since Tina said its better  ..and AdWare just figured there are 89 things  need to cleaned from my registery .. so okay .. I click Quaratine .. and pray next time I reboot this machine ..it can boot up ..

Prostrel .. you can try either SpyBot or Adware.. *ahem* .. tho I'm sure Prostrel already done this .. and I wonder why she is not online yet ,,, with any feedback .. :hmmm: .. they are good .. dont worry .. incase your computer cannot boot .. you can always sent it to computer shop. da..
:rose:

I got that 'white hand' pop- up stopper too . thanks Darje ..BUT .. I tested it at Greg's website . the pop up still there http://www.tatusongs.cjb.net/
..doesn't work.. . just have to becareful still .. NOT to click on the [OK] button.

PS: oh I noticed .. I think the Pop-up Blockers.... blocks some pop ups .. but not all ..

mrs Shapovalov , you must be joking... :D It takes me hours just to read all these helpful instructions here and try to understand them and then actually using them...

But, I did succeed to get rid off that stupid "thko" page! Yes, yes, yes! I used this:

Any and all changes made to your system are clearly stated in the terms and conditions and are fully uninstallable via the 'Help' then 'uninstall' option on any of our software applications. Additionally a separate uninstall program may be downloaded here (from: link to site)

I have tried this one before but didn`t get any results, just this sound "PLING" when I clicked uninstall button, so I thought that this uninstalling thing is just a prank or maybe a some kind of virus. But now I found out how did it work.
:done: I`m in heaven... no, in Utopia. :)

ok, I need help, but for the Mac....esp. from someone that used graphics programs (haku, I am counting on you, he he):

so the Mac is G4. The OS was X2.8 and everything was working fine. Then I installed Adobe Creative Suite - Premium (so Adobe Photoshop CS (8), Illustrator CS (11), Acrobat Professional CS (6) InDesign CS (3) and GoLive CS (7) ).... and things got messed up. And I have no idea if it was the OS, the programs... drives... whatever... this is what would happen: I would be working in FormZ and it would FREEZE! and i wont be able to Force Quit.. the cursor wont even be moving. Then i was on the internet and it would FREEZE again! VektorWorks - FREEZE again!

...so then.. i thought maybe it was the OS system... so bought the OS X3. took off everything off.. did a clean installation... installed FormZ.. did NOT install the Photoshop Suite yet... and everything was working FINE! absolutely no problems....

..next step... installed The Adobe Suite... and FREEZE! ahhhhhhhhhhhhh so at this point i know it must be the adobe.

...so i took off the whole suite off the comp.. and everything worked FINE again!!!!

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh... so i really dont know what the problem is! why wouldnt adobe work properly? any ideas?

oh thanks rosh very much :rose:
...no, absolutelly no troubles during installation...
....the mac belongs to the guy i work for, one of my x-professors.. and he read everything possible online about adobe.. about the OS... what might be the problem... and there is NOTHING about it.

oh, forgot to add before... after we took off the adobe from the comp, we ran the Norton Utilities disk.. and it found bunch of problems..and fixed them.. but i dont remember names.. it was something with file location/sharing. so we think maybe the problems comes from the new adobe suite.. it has this brand new thing... about file locaion/sharing... maybe it is messing something up.. but why and what and how.. we DONT know.

..we though next step would be to install the suite without that part.. i forgot what it's called CS or something... and see if that helps :dknow:

denial, does http://www.searchwww.com/ open up automatically when you sign on? (i.e. your home page).. or is it when you are just browsing..

It looks like you may have been hijacked and/or have spyware on your PC. Make sure you have the spyware cleaning progams mentioned earlier. The pop-up blocker looks safe, but I haven't checked it out to thoroughly because I need to be somewhere right now. A posibility is that some spyware could have been sent to the file you downloaded.

coolasfcuk, something similar happened to me when I was installing Enter the Matrix. The trouble MIGHT be your reader if you're installing it from CD (but as Mac is much more careful about their hardware, medoubts it). The trouble then might be the installer. O_o

I looked for your problem and couldn't find any similar cases, this is strange.

The problem definitely comes from Adobe though, and yeah, you're right, the CS Suite has a new element called Version Cue which allows different users to work on the same file at the same time. It's new and i don't know how stable it is. You should try to install only the regular applications without Version Cue to see if things work correctly (people who don't buy the complete suite don't get Version Cue so it's definitely optional).

But i'm basically saying what you said so i'm not of any help, lol. :)

yessss! that's what it was called - the new thing - Im horrible with names....

There is a new virus named W32/Mydoom@MM. This is a mass-mailing worm that arrives in an email message as follows:
From: (spoofed)
Subject: (Random)
Body: (Varies, such as)

The message cannot be represented in 7-bit ASCII encoding and has been sent as a binary attachment.
The message contains Unicode characters and has been sent as a binary attachment.
Mail transaction failed. Partial message is available.
Attachment: (varies [.exe, .pif, .cmd, .scr] - often arrives in a ZIP archive) (22,528 bytes). The icon used by the file tries to make it appear as if the attachment is a text file

Please make sure you install the latest virus pattern and do not open any attachment from emails that look suspicious.

To cover their tracks and avoid getting arrested, most virus spreaders take an innocent computer "hostage" (or more) and send massive spam mail from there. Or perhaps install one of the free one. I used avast for a while. www.avast.com - free for home use. But it's not the best antivirus program out there. I use norton myself. Also tried mcafee (<-spelling?) and panda. I like Norton the best though.

Since I have a hotmail as my regular mail that one is scanned twice. Mcafee is already installed by Microsoft, and then norton will scan it too when the mail gets to outlook express. Pretty safe I hope :p

False, Tina: the Blaster worm travels from IP to IP by means of your connection, and it affects your KeyReg only. Actually more people got it this way than on the email, since up to where I know Blaster wasn't an executable file, just a worm that kept on going and going. :P

MyDoom, you do get it in the email. I never open mails from unknown people since the list of email transmitted viruses is ridiculously huge. Be careful.

I think Antivirus should be FREE. I think the best solution again email virus is to install the Anti Virus on the mail server itself .. where all the email gathered before downloaded by users to their computer. So the Anti Virus software should target the company server and ISP.

But of course for home computer .. second protection will be good. for virus tranfered through diskette, cdrom or messenger from someone like .. Queenbee for example.

i mean, i never get such problems, but i use Smart Ripper to rip to vobs and then DrDivx to encode it to divx, or Gordian Knot for xvid. but if you want to encode it to xvid, i'd recommend you use Auto Gordian Knot, which is as good as the "normal" Gordian but MUCH simpler.

QueenBee have you tried to use system restore? I have a starting point and I always get back to that when I come across problems ( with viruses, files etc )

I have a big suspicion that system restore gets rid of all that crap, cause it always does it for me. So I don't have an anti-virus program installed anymore :D

spyretto
03-02-2004, 23:43
I'm serious

system restore will not clear the registry but you can run
msconfig to do that.
Msconfig/startup/cleanup

Anyway, if the virus is in the restore folder your antivirus program will find it but won't be able to get rid of it.
So you can either use system restore - as I do - or disable system restore and use your antivirus program. ( but I found it a very bulky and time-consuming software )

It all depends how many programs you have on your computer. If you only need a few programs and you do not install - uninstall programs all the time, having a starting point ( and using system restore ) is ok, cause if it's for one of two programs you can always go back every now and then.

But using system restore and creating restore points all the time will eventually wipe out the entry of your original restore point. ;)

What I do is this: I have a starting point with all the programs I need and if I run into any sort of trouble I go back. Then I clear all restore points and make only one where I can go back to.
It all depends on the operational system ( I think that with Win XP you can erase restore points at will, right? ) Cause I've got ME so everytime I go back I clear the hard disk space that the system restore takes up by disabling, enabling it back and making another restore point.

the whole process takes five minutes. I just luv system restore :gigi:

edit: Maybe you need an antivirus program, all I know is that using Norton was a pain in the butt for me, took ages to scan my files ( my computer is old and slow ) then find viruses that wouldn't be able to erase. :bum:
Stinger? well, that one never found any viruses for me , maybe it works better for XP. From a point on it started freezing when scanning a specific file. So...my opinion is that you don't need any antivirus programs :D

Well, basically I was having headaches too...for years :D so I'm talking from experience.
Oh, and M$ don't include uninstallers for their programs anymore so if you don't like one - I hated wmp 9 for example - they advice you to use system restore to go back.
The only other solution is to format your root partition and start again :bum:

Basically, you don't need any more system programs than the ones M$ provides you with. Those programs will probably create more problems than solve problems :D

System Restore is good .. yes .. you should backup your computer often.

But just that this virus problem .. Anti Virus will catch the virus before it could harm your system. If you dont have anti-virus to detect there is virus in your computer.. how you going to know when is it time to use the System Restore?

spyretto
04-02-2004, 17:26
yes but you need to have the anti virus program always enabled in your system to do that. Doesn't it slow the computer down and cause other compatibility problems?

I haven't got much experience with the latest viruses, for some reason they only affect Win XP and 2000. but if you have your files in another partition - would the virus affect your files there? If not then you can use system restore as soon as your computer starts behaving funny.

Thinking that only antivirus slows down the system is not entirely correct.
1. Data Mines/Advert, does it a lot more.
2. MSN messenger slows down your computer dramatically.
3. Unnecessarily launched programs at startup - too.
4. Too many programs at Quick Launch Bar - of course.

Anti Virus programs don't slow down the computer. If you have a huge HD to scan, you can always leave the scan during the time you are not at the computer. It's not dangerous to have the computer on because it "eats" very little electricity and has qute good cooling system.

Uninstall MSN for fun to see the difference.
To uninstall MSN with one click:
1.Start - Run - [the following command below, copy and paste in the command window]
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
2. You'll be prompted to uninstall MSN.

MSN loads a program called loadqm at startup, some useless program that checks if you have an older version of msn. If you disable or get rid of that program MSN won't be slowing your computer down as much.

Quick launch bar? I never have any programs there. It's annoying ;)

Have you got a dial up connection QueenBee? Cause you may notice that the virus protection interferes with your connection and hangs up the line.

hmmm... stands at queenie's side :lalala:

I am a fool when it comes to computers... I mean I can deal with some programmes like Photoshop... but when it comes to something more serious i do suck...

Anyway... i have my computer with Internet connection for 5-6 years... may be even more... i don't know what Firewalls are for... I don't have any antivirus software... and nothing ever happened. i can't remember getting any virus... even if i did, I don't know about it :gigi: Being a true russian I follow this rule 'poka grom ne gryanet, muzhik ne perekrestitsa'. Which means I won't think about problem before I really get it.

So when my Windows died not so long ago, I was kinda surprised. When I shared my problem with some computer-knowing friends they were about to die from laughter. They just couldn't believe my Windows was never re-installed in 5 years! lol

Yeah... some things wouldn't work... but I'd just look here or there, push a pair of buttons and suddenly everything is ok... But the more I learn about computers, the less things work on it. I never toughed Windows for 5 years... now I reinstall it regulary... wich is quite painful with my 100% american computer that just refuses to work with russian pirated programmes *sigh*

Ok... as there are so many knowing ppl, I have a couple of questions:

First is about programmes working with music... I have Yamaha sound card and ordinary headset (with mic and headphones). Sound Forge, Cool Edit, Frooty Loops, Samplitude producer and other programes... they all work ok... while such programes as Cubase and Logic Platinum pretend they are mute and deaf. There's no sound... at all. They worked well at the beginning... but then something happened and they shut up... I remember quite well that I wasn't changing anything in Settings. Now even if I re-install them, they are mute.

2nd... well... it's an easy one... I'm about to get ADSL in a couple of days... and I never cared about traffic before... I was counting only minutes as I paid per hour. Just curious if anyone knows how many Kbs browsing tatysite takes... per hour... I know u can't give exact number... but still... and such programmes as ICQ... how much per hour?

3rd question is for our lil queenie, the queen of web-design lol U said u could help here :lalala: so...
a) is there a way I can get a border consisting of 1px dots for example? I don't think I've seen this option is CSS. But may be I just didn't notice of course....
b) now IFRAMEs... and Opera browser... This option is for IE mostly... but I've seen pages with IFRAMES and they worked ok in my Opera... even older version than I have now. But when I write HTML code by hand... and try to see it in Opera, it shows some weird stuff like oe> or somethong like that instead of the whole page. So my questin is: WTF?
c) u should know the answer on this I think... I feel comfortable enough with tables and all... but layers are something I'm a fool at. The question: what I need filters for and how each of them works?

lol... ok... enough by now... I'm asking too much... I have some more questions but I'll shut up by now :lalala:

You reinstall them from scratch?

I used to do that but now I use system restore. As a matter of fact, I just used it now. I'm a very happy customer :D

About ADSL, do you mean they impose some downloading/uploading limit  I've heard about that before but with cable not ADSL. That's quite disturbing, actually.

well... spy... I am such a fool that I'm not even sure if what I'm going to get is actually ADSL... but it's a wireless domestic network... or something... as for limits... not... there are no limits... I just get 200Mbs of free traffic per month and then I have to pay for each Mb 0.7$. That's all... So I'd like to know how much will the thing cost for me... i just paid more than 100& to get it and hope it will be worth it... coz now I can spend 20$ in 2 days lol

If it's a wireless technology, it's not ADSL (ADSL is wired), it sounds more like Wi-Fi technology or something similar. :)

200MB is enough if all you do is browsing web sites or chatting on MSN/AIM, but you'll have to be careful to not donwload too much big files because you could use that in only one day.

PS: I hope you meant 200MB because you wrote 200Mb but that would be very little.

good luck ;)
Thanks a lot crni!....I've finally succeded in ripping my dvd in Divx....
But i have another little problem now....i've gotten a LONG video in which i included 2 langages : french and english.
The video was long so my software cut it into 3 parts : 3X699Mo
After i got the subtittles in english and french with vobdub...but as my video is cut with 3 parts when i launch the subtittles with the video number 2 , for exemple, the subtittles begin at the beginning of the movie !...
So , do you know how to do to "cut" the subtittles and make them work perfectly with the video , please?
Thanks a lot..

sunwalk, i'm not really sure if i got this one... but let's see...
you mean you have three vids and one subtitle file? for three videos you must have three different subtitle files to load with each video separately... that's how i do it...
anyway...the software i use is SubtitleProcessor (http://www.freewebs.com/crni/SP.zip). it can do pretty much anything you want to do with the subs, so feel free to experiment ;)

From the above page:
After you have clicked the link:
If your address bar only says "http://www.microsoft.com" then your browser is vulnerable.

Also, notice that your status bar (lower left corner of IE) only displays "http://www.microsoft.com" when holding the mouse cursor over the link.

Note:
I think this is critical especially if you are doing online banking or shopping.

Go get the newest updates and security fixes at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
I usually install the updates one at a time just in case some tries to update the same files.
Then either visit the update site at a regular basis or turn on automatic update. I perfer visiting the site myself since not all updates are needed for my use.

a) is there a way I can get a border consisting of 1px dots for example? I don't think I've seen this option is CSS. But may be I just didn't notice of course....
Yeah, and I think it will show up differently in IE and other browsers. For example, in IE it will show as small lines, not exactly small dots. I think it works good in Mozilla.

If you want all objects to have a border of a special kind (in this case dotted) you add this as CSS:

<STYLE>
---Object--- {border-style: dotted}
</STYLE>

For example if you want images to have a dotted border you add this:

<STYLE>
IMG {border-style: dotted}
</STYLE>

If you want only a specific image to have a border like this you add: style="BORDER:1px dotted #000000" to the image.

For example: <img src="Imagename.jpg" style="BORDER:1px dotted #000000">

You can play around with the attributes. :) And also add different objects such as:

<STYLE>
P, IMG {border-style: dotted}
</STYLE>

Some more examples of border you can try:
-Dashed (looks like small lines)
-Dotted
-Groove
-Inset
-Outset
-Ridge
-Solid (looks like regular border)

Remember that in IE and Mozilla and Opera and all those things it can show up differently because of the coding style.

b) now IFRAMEs... and Opera browser...
Hehehe, yeah, different browsers sometimes screw up the coding.. I have no idea why this is. I think when we code by hand we use a special coding, it's not that very complicated, but when you use programs such as Dreamweaver and FrontPage, they use more complicated coding styles which these different browers understand better than when we code by hand.. but that's just what I THINK.. I'm not sure at all. So I'm sorry. :(

c) u should know the answer on this I think... I feel comfortable enough with tables and all... but layers are something I'm a fool at. The question: what I need filters for and how each of them works?
I think filters and layers are different things.. but you asked about layers.. so.. I'm gonna answer about using layers. I'm not sure what all the things they can do are, but I use them to position different things on a page. For example on my website (I know! Sneaky commercial :p) http://www.self-destructive.lunaticsworld.com you can see how I have added Yulia over the iframe so that she covers the text when you scroll. And I used DIV Layers to create that effect. (The Yulia is a GIF-image where the background is transparent) They're really good when you make websites, but I suck at explaining at how they work exactly. I saw a website using them, and then I just taught myself. I tried looking for pages on Google.com about div layers, but honestly I didn't get any of the things that they said..

Anyway, here is how you add a layer. You simply write it in the <body> section of the html-code.

<div id="image" style="position: absolute; left: ###px; top: ###px; width: ###px; height: ###px"> <img border="0" src="yourimage.jpg" width="yourwidth" height="yourheight"> </div>

Div id = I think this is used for other more complicated codings, when you specify the name of the object.. I never use this myself, I actually erase it completely, but if you want you can always do some research.. I tried and haven't gotten any good results. I had a HTML-book before but I can't find it now, otherwise I would have looked in there. :(

Style="position: absolute; left: ###px; top: ###px; width: ###px; height: ###px" = This is where you position the object(s). Left: how many pixels from the left it should be. Top: How many pixels from the top it should be. The width and height decide how big the layer should be, but I never use them, the layer's height and width is decided automatically depending on how big the object(s) is/are. Kind of hard to explain, but you don't need to use the height and width attributes.

I put the image code as an example so you know where the object should be.

That's it! Wow, that's totally MESSED UP. I'm really sorry if you don't get any of it.. it's very complicated to explain. But try it out and play around with it. And if there is any problem just tell me! :rose: We might not use the same techniques, and sorry if I misinterpreted your questions... I hope this helped anyway (And if it did not help you, I hope it helped someone else) but I'm sorry it just confused everybody.. :p

1.Start - Run - [the following command below, copy and paste in the command window]
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
2. You'll be prompted to uninstall MSN.

All right, I ran the command. It uninstalls the original version of MSN (4.7) shipped with Win XP. However, it keeps the later updates and MSN works just fine. Nevertheless, this version (4.7) seem to slow down the computer. The difference is seen. Especially when launching Outlook Express. Now it starts without any delays.

Mentioned by spy loadqm is not running under Win Xp and therefore not listed in the Processes.

If you lost MSN anyway, get it back. http://messenger.msn.com/

It's short for Cascading Style Sheets
Used when building homepages. Then all standards for font, backgrounds, tables.. Design features to be short can be written in one file and used by all the html (asp, php.. add more) pages. Saves time when designing and esp when redesigning. The styles can be included in the top of the page itself but a part of the feature of saving time is a bit wasted.

Programs: Stripping Adware/Spyware from PC Can Be Tricky
Sat Feb 7, 2:35 PM ET Add Technology - Reuters to My Yahoo!

By Gene Emery

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Reuters) - One of the biggest challenges a computer owner can face is getting rid of adware or spyware, programs that can sneak onto your PC when you agree to download free utility software from the Web.

In addition to monitoring your activity on the Internet, adware and spyware can lock you into an unwanted home page and swamp you with pop-up advertisements.

Removal can be difficult because the designers of such programs often try to keep them out of sight on your PC.

Most don't show up on the "Add/Remove Programs" list in the Windows control panel. They seldom offer an "Uninstall" option in the Windows "Programs" list; in fact, they're seldom listed at all.

Even when you identify them, some adware programs can't be removed directly because they are tied to other unrelated utility programs you may have wanted.

If you're a do-it-yourselfer, there are ways to get rid of the programs. The first step: Go to sites such as http://PestPatrol.com or http://WebRoot.com and run a free scan of your computer. They list any adware/spyware they see, but they do not tell you how to remove it.

The site http://PCPitStop.com, has been very aggressive in taking on adware and spyware. And, although it identifies fewer programs than PestPatrol and WebRoot, it does a much better job of explaining how to clean your computer.

Another way of removing adware is to find its Web site, a plan that can be easy if your home page has been hijacked. Some of those sites offer an "Uninstall" program for their software, though it may be a challenge to find it. Look for an FAQ (frequently asked questions) link.

Unfortunately, such uninstall programs don't always undo all the changes made to your PC. An adware program called i-lookup had a downloadable program to uninstall its software, but the i-lookup-sponsored Web pages listed in the "Favorites" section of Internet Explorer remained. I had to click on "Organize Favorites" and manually delete them.

A better bet for scouring your hard disk clean may be independent programs. The ones I found worked pretty well from all sorts of places (like the Windows registry).

The best bargain was "Ad-aware," popular with many readers, as I learned from the e-mail I got after last week's column.

"Ad-aware 6.0," available to home users for free from http://www.LavaSoftUSA.com, is easy to use. It lets you sort programs and files by type or adware company, so you can see the program it is proposing to delete. It eliminated annoyances such as a toolbar cluttering up Internet Explorer that kept returning even after I told Explorer not to display it.

"Ad-aware" tracked down traces of adware I thought I had removed, and eliminated two viruses that had gotten on the PC because the owner had not kept his virus checker up to date.

However, "Ad-aware" does not automatically watch for adware unless you pay $27 for an upgrade. You must run it regularly and check for updates.

Several readers said they run "Spybot-Search & Destroy," available for free, at http://safer-networking.org.

I have less confidence in "Spy Sweeper" from http://WebRoot.com, which you can try for free or buy for $30. It's easy to use and updates automatically, but offers few details about the adware it finds.

During the cleaning process, "Spy Sweeper" told me I was running other programs I needed to close, but didn't say which ones or how to go about it. It also said I had Internet Explorer running when I didn't (at least as far as I could tell). Such statements don't inspire confidence.

When I asked "Pest Patrol" to clean up a PC whose owner had already manually eliminated or disabled some of the unwanted programs, it found plenty of adware-associated remnants. But it got hung up in the decontamination process. Fortunately, the program displayed the folder that seemed to be causing problems. Because the folder was named Claria, after the adware company, I quit out of "Pest Patrol," opened Windows Explorer, and sent the whole Claria folder to the Recycle Bin.

When I reran "Pest Control," it cleaned everything else out smoothly. You can try "Pest Patrol" for free. The full version, with a year of updates, is $40. The license costs $20 a year.

If you're bothered by adware, but you want to keep using the "free" programs that come with it, "StopZilla," available from StopZilla.com, may be worth a look. It doesn't try to remove the adware and spyware, but claims to suppress it, by eliminating most of the pop-up windows while letting the "free" programs run freely. It costs $20 per year.

Personally, I'd rather just get rid of it all. Then I would use PanicWare.com's free "Pop-Up Stopper" program, or something comparable, to block most pop-up windows.

A final word: Make it a habit to click "No" whenever a Web site tries to get you to download a "free" program.

Oh... thanks queenie for ur help :rose:
a) well... for the first question... I know enough about CSS... just wanted to make sure I didn't miss the option of making the dotted border. So seems there's no way to do it for all browsers. I tried {border-style: dotted} before... but as I use IE mostly, it looked exactly like small lines... not what I wanted to get actually *sigh*

b) whuh... I don't like using all those WYSIWYG programms... they give some heavy code usually and most of them doesn't know what IFRAMEs are *sigh* FrontPage has this option... so may be will have to spend some more time trying to figure out the difference between it's code and mine. Sometimes even such useless options as ID change everything. :(

c) now for layers... well... I've seen ur pages before and I love them all I must say :rose: really... u are damn talented, u know? ;) and of course I didn't miss the opportunity to see ur coding :lalala: No intentions to steal... just pure interest... So everything was pretty clear for me... just this line got my interest:
style="FILTER: chroma (color=#998675). So I asked you what the hell it was about. I said 'layers' coz u use this option with DIV tag :lalala:

and not... u didn't MESS UP lol u explained everything really well, thank you :rose:

Now for D's question :gigi: Yeah, I finally got my new connection... whuh... I'm glad I did. Still need some time to get used not to disconnect in hurry after opening 15 pages just to read them lol It's something I had to do paying for each minute and having few money left on account... Also need to get used to seeing 100 000 000 bits/sec instead of usual 21 600 and needing 10 seconds instead of usual hour to download 3 MB file LoL But this is somethig I will get used VERY soon I believe  As for rains... well... it's not like we are going to have rains here any soon... it's winter still... but today it was snowing hard and everything worked more than ok. :gigi:

sunny poison, pheeew thank god I did a decent explanation. :) And about this:

style="FILTER: chroma (color=#998675).
It's kind of complicated to explain.. It is to make the iframe transparent. (This tag is part of <iframe> if I'm correct). The background color of the iframe is #998675 and if you add this code *points to quote* it means that that color gets transparent and since the background is that color.. the iframe's background is transparent.
Erm.

Here is the background where I put the iframe just to show you what it looks like (http://www.self-destructive.lunaticsworld.com/version4.jpg). So the iframe is completely transparent.. yeah.

Oh and don't worry.. copy my code if you want, I have nothing against that. :) For you: :rose:

:rose: :rose: :rose: :rose: :rose: - they are all for u lil queenie. well... I could give u more of course... just 5 is my fav number lol sorry

Whuh.... coping someone's code is plain boring. I'm the type that needs to do all by herself. But thanks for being so generous :)

So... chroma and color=#998675 gives me this effect... ok... lol... when I refused to use layers, I was getting same effect with Photoshop and tables. i was just taking the part of the picture and using it as a fixed bg image for IFRAME. looked the same but it's a harder way. I thought I was adopting the site for more browsers this way... not all of them support layers... but if I think again... not all of them support IFRAMEs lol So the effort was kinda useless...

hm... I could just use that ur code.... but well... lol... I'm impossible. I want to know about OTHER filters. I understand U can't know all... just asking in case u do lol

And thanks for ur help once again :rose: Oh... damn... 6 roses now... but it's my bro's fav number... so I'll be a good sister at least

And I didn't see pics of her either.

W32/Coconut-A
Summer 2003
Displays a graphical game where the recipient must throw coconuts at the heads of Belgian hacker, Frans Devaere, and Sophos's Graham Cluley. Each hit ensures that one less file on the recipient's computer will be infected.

Yeah. Very cute. Specially when a brand new computer has got over 50,000 files. *Checks out the description.*

Hey, hats out to this girl. At least she knows how to check mate you by using simple math. :P

In total, you have 4 point(s). Therefore, I have infected 2 files on your computer. To be able to run these files, you'll first have to play this game again.
Have a nice day,

Gigabyte [Metaphase VX Team]

The girl knows her shit! Say, the game probably infects a key Windows file. You can't get your computer to work correctly without playing again, therefore infecting other files.

*H4x0r h4ts off to her.*

LOL QueenBee, i meant the exact opposite of what you understood. I have this fantasy that female nerds are sexy (i call that the Alysson Hannigan (http://perso.wanadoo.fr/pagd/tatu/hakudesk0210.jpg) syndrome), so what i meant is "despite being a nerd (therefore sexy in my mind and also denial's apparently), she might be unattractive".

Plus, i consider myself a big nerd, but that's a counter example since i *am* unattractive. :P

spy this is not something YOU can set or unset. it is programmed into the code of the backend of the website. the company whose website it is, will instruct its programmers to set idle timeouts in order to ensure that should the person leave their pc while busy with a transaction, no one comes along and fiddles with it and commits fraud [for example] .

so really that control is in place programmed into the website for your own protection :)

you could try emailing the technical support of the company and ask them to extend the idle timeout by a few minutes.

WARNING : W32.Welchia.B.Worm
Threat level : Category 3, Moderate (scale of 1-5)
Type : Worm

What is W32.Welchia.B.Worm and how does it affect me?

As of February 13, 2003, due to an increased rate of submissions, Symantec Security Response has
upgraded this threat to a Category 3 from a Category 2.

W32.Welchia.B.Worm is a variant of W32.Welchia.Worm. If the version of the operating system of the infected machine is Chinese, Korean, or English, the worm will attempt to download the Microsoft Workstation Service Buffer Overrun and Microsoft Messenger Service Buffer Overrun patches from the Microsoft® Windows Update Web site, install it, and then restart the computer.

W32.Welchia.B.Worm propagates by exploiting the:
1. Microsoft Windows DCOM RPC Interface Buffer Overrun Vulnerability (BID 8205)
2. Microsoft Windows ntdll.dll Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (BID 7116)
3. Microsoft Windows Workstation Service Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (BID 9011)

The worm also attempts to remove the W32.Mydoom.A@mm and W32.Mydoom.B@mm
worms

if any of this is too technical, please let me know and i will attempt to explain :)

Geek and nerd have very close meanings.

From my dictionary:

Geek: a person with an eccentric devotion to a particular interest.

Nerd: an intelligent, single-minded expert in a particular technical discipline or profession.

Of course, some people use those terms derogatorily to mean something like "lacking social skills and boring", but that's because they are less intelligent than us and jealous. :bebebe:

Denial, I build computers. The largest I've ever gotten when it comes to virii was a trojan, and that was on Lenok v.1. Lenok v.2 has never been infected nor hacked into, and I expect it bloody keeps that way.

What you think is creative is hacking. What is NOT funny about it is that this girl isn't a hacker, she's a cracker. Oh don't mind me, I respect her enough already, most crackers have little to no imagination. The coconut virus shows that she at least knows how to create something fun while fucking up your system.

I stand my point, you're completely crazy. A hacker helps improve the security in a network/computer by breaking into it and checking out mistakes. They're seldom the same as crackers, whose "creative virus writing" only sends us back one month of development for each virus that goes worldwide. :/

Apparently the automatic anti-virus program updates could be used by troyans to access the net unnoticed, so you should'nt let the firewall access the net at any time.

piojita, if you download the Zone Alarm .. its almost perfect with intruction and advice .. (beside it configured with novice/expert option) .. I think its really build for end-user who doesn't know much about network... I just installed it last night ..

.. and if someone try to let say 'telnet' your PC .. it will block it.. then you can click on "more info" .. and it will advice you what to do .. and it even have "Hacker ID" in the info page .. which also show you the map of location where that attack came from .. I mean real map ..like Japan map and show the city .. and you can even report the abuse .. rather than just sit there and not knowing what to do .. they will gather the report and analyse the patern and decide if its hostile or not.

I think it very cool .. and for purpose of learning too .. :done: .. but it only came with the PRO version . but you get to try it for 15 days ..the free version does not have that hacker id option and more .. but still a firewall..

But I haven't found any instructions on how to actually do it and I don't think many people know about these things...any ideas??
hmmm ..to me ..internet for new user .. its something like learning to drive .. you can't read from book and become a good driver.. you have to get experience from it .. then you'll learn to drive good ... its a big network out there ..

If you don't want to download the virus-dat automatic .. you can download it manually from the anti-virus site .. and run it ..

Apparently the automatic anti-virus program updates could be used by troyans to access the net unnoticed,
.. I am trying to think about how is that possible... DNS manipulation? how did the trojans gets in that pc in the first place.. and change anti-virus software configuration ..change the config file .. ? .. I read this issue before .. so I am used to downloading the virus update manually too .. but I don't know whats the technical story behind it .. maybe I'll find out someday ..

Redmond Attacks Linux Directly

I actually like this. MS is taking Linux seriously. This is good news. Competition keeps everybody on their toes with great benefits to the users. Redmond unleashed a new campaign against Linux. Even created a whole site for people to peruse, and they have a multi-million dollar ad campaign going. The site compiles a bunch of data that 'proves' that the Windows platform is cheaper to use and develop applications on than Linux. Check it out. Redmond feels the heat!

@ Rosh, Denial Thanks!:rose:

I did some more research and found two specific things you can do to increase security with firewalls. One (the most crucial one) is to configure the firewall to warn you every time one program wants to use another to access the internet (like this: Do you want to allow PROGRAM.EXE to use Internet Explorer to access the Internet?) the other one is to block all ports and then open the relevant ones.
I use Norton and Zone alarm (not pro) but can't figure out how to configure them like this, so if any of you guys can help it's very appreciated. :)

denial
23-02-2004, 07:32
Hi piojita, congratulation on the research. :D

Sorry for late reply.. I havent been to this thread. About the "program.exe" .. yes it can be very tricky there.. as we can't know what all the program's filename for.

While using Zone alaram .. I will click on MORE INFO first .. and read recomendation .. when it tell me to decide myself ..I write down the program name and do the search in google to see what the program related to. So I decide to allow or not.

But if you really-really not sure .. better to BLOCK it .. then you can post here so we can look what its also about.

If the program is okay .. we can later set to allow the program to access internet.

:)

I don't have to configure this .. its already default when I install Zone Alarm. When it start running, it already ask me if I want to allow this "program.exe" to access internet or not .. I have to answer some questions at first .... some that is common . I set it to "Remember the asnwer" ... then later not much bothering anymore. And I also set not to show pop-up of blocked alert and I can surf peacefully. Later I will check the log.

To answer your question, when you open Zone Alarm panel, click on the "Program Control" .. there you can see the list of program .. and it's rules.

If you left- click on the [ check or ? or x ] .. you have option to "allow" , "block" or "ask" .. for your question .. you should select "ask" .. so it will ask everytime it want to go to internet.

Thanx for answering! yeah zone alarm notifies me when a program wants to access Internet and I always check out the programs before I let them do it. The thing I don't get is how to make zone alarm (and norton) to notify me when one program uses another program to access . For instance the program Explorer can be used by other programs (like troyans) to access Internet. Without this configuration Zone alarm will only ask if you want to let Explorer access and if you choose "allow" you will actually let the troyan access Internet, not only explorer, without knowing it...

ohh dang! never thought of it that way!

I've also install the iHateSpam program, and it work with my Outlook Express. When I get a spam, it will mark the spam email, and move it to deleted item folder and send reply to the sender that he/she sending me a spam email.

When my Outlook Express want to reply this spam email, the Zone Alarm will prompt me again of another program asking to access the internet. Those are another iHateSpam program with task to send mail back to the sender.

**But I'm not sure if this related to your doubt.

Another example is I open 'filename.doc' using Internet Explorer. And it just open the file, even inside Internet explorer, its use Microsoft Word. But in this case.. its not Microsoft Word that going out to the internet .. just open the file in it already downloaded.

** okay so now I'm trying to open using Adobe Acrobat ..
Same its not asking .. probably same reason with above situation. hmm..

mmm... good news.. I just tried with .asx file to play stream video. Internet Explorer will open Windows Media Player for this .. and the Zone Alarm asked me if I want to allowed wmplayer.exe to access too 127.0.0.1:2050

Ohh .. and the destination is local .. but still it prompt for permission ..

So I click on More Info:

127.0.0.1 is a loopback address, not a valid Internet IP address

A loopback address is a special IP address that a computer uses to refer to itself. Many Windows programs send information to the loopback address before sending information out to the network or to the Internet. Some programs may use the loopback address even when they are not about to send information to the network or the Internet, due to some peculiarities in the way Windows handles TCP/IP.

Any address that begins with "127" is a loopback address. The most commonly used loopback address is 127.0.0.1.

This address cannot be used as the IP address of a computer on the Internet. It only has meaning on the computer that generated it. Therefore, if this is an inbound alert, the source address was probably forged in order to hide the identity of the sender.

Now I'm gonna click 'Yes' ..okay the video is play .. but the destination is loopback.

What else?

I tried windowsupdate website . but I have nothing to update and Zone Alarm didn't asked me anything to allow or not. Maybe later ....

------

Then I use ICQ to view my contact "User's Unified Mesaging Center" which will open Internet Explorer. No it didnt asked if I want to allow or block IE to access internet .. because the rules already allowed IE to access internet.

I change the rule to set IE to "ask"

I did ICQ thing again .. and Zone Alarm did asked me if I want to allowed IE to access internet.

-----

There is another setting in Zone Alarm Program Control -- Main - highlight the IE .. at the bottom right .. click on "Option" .. there you can check "This program may use other programs to access internet" .. mine is set to UNCHECK.

In Zone Alarm Program Control -- Components - you can see details of components (DLL files) - same way .. you can set them to 'allow" or ask.

-----

...If its trojan .. then its anti-virus's task I think.

BUT .. let say its a trojan .. an act as a server in computer .. definetely Zone Alarm will alert because its a new program want to access internet an act as a server to accept connection from internet.

Or trojan that act as client trying to access to its server on internet.... if it using IE .. I think it can go through.

I use telnet to access a website. Zone Alarm prompted me of telnet.exe wants to access internet --

*waits for Rosh* .. :bum:

Haven't been here in a while. I haven't missed anything (important), have I?

DAZ, thanks. New worms and viruses nowadays can generate random messages in their subject line, creating a deceptive look. Make sure you never open an e-mail if you don't know who sent it, and definately do not download unknown attached files.

protoman2k1 have you tried using googles toolbar ? it will block popups for you.

you also need to check to see if anything has recently been installed on your pc that you didnt install [such as a searchcompany.com program. i am not sure what it would be called.

look for "iefeatsl" see if that is in your programs list [go to start, settings, control panel, add / remove programs.]

let me know if this helps, if not i will do some more digging for you that does not involve editing your windows registry.

editing the registry is very much a "at your own peril" type of activity. if you feel comfortable editing the registry let me know and ill outline another procedure for you.

hey everyone, this is a VERY interesting link and VERY informative. i rarely type in caps so the added emphasis is definitely warranted :)

check out this link :

http://www.pchell.com/support/searchspace.shtml

it has info on how to get rid of most home page hijackers.

http://www.pchell.com/ in general is a really cool site with all sorts of info on just about any pc problem that could cause you some grief. little write up ... copied from their page :

"You've Been Here Before, but Now You're Just Visiting...

Everyone has been to PC Hell at one time or another. It's that place you visit when your personal computer is driving you insane with problems, glitches, and so on. To try to soothe the frustration, we'll provide some tips, hints, and troubleshooting remedies to help you get out of PC Hell. Be warned however, sometimes there is no exit...."

hehe a bit ominous :)

ok if anyone checks that webpage and has questions about certain procedures, as always i am more than happy to provide any assistance :)

Exactly, and it's not the only problem, actually it could even use the firewall itself to go through. I found this out after installing a trojan (PCAudit)that tries to access it's server, it's supposed to tell you if your firewall works. After spending a whole day trying to stop it from sending info (passwords, screendumps..) from my computer , without any success, i finally realised that it used the Zone alarm to access Internet, so watch out...Yeah, i'm getting paranoid alright :bum:

protoman2k1 do you have a pop up stopper to block the ads? I use Pop this! (http://www.mathies.com/popthis/) it works, it's free and easy to use.

you could use GoldWave... get it at www.goldwave.com
it's 1,5mb and fairly easy to use. just go to file-open and select the video you would like to extract the audio from. then the program itself reads only the audio from the video (:D) and there you have it! just save the file as .wav or .wma and that's it! ;)

Okay..i have a new problem: with my camera (Canon IXUS 400) i can make some little movies and i can see them on my computer without problem (at the origine , the software "Quick Time" was with the camera to see them on the computer).
But if i burn them on a cd , and try to see them on the tv with an [B]DVD-DIVX[I] player, I can't. I can see the pics with a DVD-DiVX player but not the little movies.

Would you know a software which could convert/change the format of these little movies in AVI. or in other things to allow me to see them with my DVD-DIVX PLAYER , please?

I was hoping someone could give me some advice cos my computer is acting up and I don’t know what to do.
As soon as I go online I’m bombarded by loads of pop-ups and when I try to close them I just get a “program is not responding” message. If I click “cancel” nothing happens and everything freezes and if I click “end now” all the windows close and I have to start all over again.
I know I could just leave the pop-up’s open but I’ve heard stories about how, somehow, leaving certain pop-up’s open can really run up your phone bill because someone is charging you money the whole time they are on your screen. I saw an article on the news about this one guy who ran up a phone bill of over £1,500 in this way!
I’ve had to type this message on Word while I was offline and copy and paste it here cos spending more than 30 seconds online is practically impossible for me since this problem started. Could someone please give me some idea of what’s going wrong and how I can fix it? I hope I’ll be able to come back to read any replies.

mossopp : install spybot and adaware and google toolbar

urls

adaware : www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

spybot : www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

google toolbar : toolbar.google.com

install the first two first. run them one after the other. they will rid your machine of spyware and other nasties

google toolbar has a handy feature that allows you to BLOCK popups.

Most of the pop-up's I get now all eventually end up saying "page not available off-line", but I'm still getting numerous pop-ups advertising free ringtones etc.
I've installed all the things you advised and ran them twice. I then deleted/quaranteened all the errors and abnormalities found but it's still making no difference. Is there anything else you could suggest I try?

Thanks, I appreciate this.
First off, I don't actually have an anti-virus. I've installed and ran both the programs you suggested numerous times. Last night they had apparently found and quarantined/deleted all the problems. But I ran them again half-an-hour ago and they discovered 6 new problems and I hadn't even been online in the interim!! I don't understand how new bugs can be appearing when I haven't been online in order to pick them up.
I also installed Google toolbar and have selected the 'block all pop-ups' option but some are still gettting though. It's always the same 2 ads and they appear at least once a minute.
Here's a list of all the stuff in my 'add/remove programs' list. I don't see anything untoward but maybe you'll be able to tell me if there's something here that shouldn't be:

Active Disk
Ad-aware 6 personal
CD Checker
Div X Codec
Div X Player
Google Toolbar
HP Deskjet
Iomga tools
Iomega ware
Microsoft Office
MSN add-in for windows messenger
Quicktime
SIS multimedia
Soundblaster Audio
Spybot
Windows SA
Windows SR
Windows XP uninstall
Winzip
wsem update

Like I said, I don't see anything unusual here.
Thanks again for your help. :rose:

You should also download an Antivirus as well Mossop and possibly a firewall as well.

Free antivirus at...

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php
I use this and the free version has detected more than Norton ever has.
Just go to Free Edition.

You can select a choice of firewalls at http://www.download.com/
You can also read the reviews as well.

OK, I'm in the process of getting Daz's wee anti-virus thing at the moment.
The two pop ups I keep getting are a giant one for a free polyphonic ringtone and the other one - which I get less frequently - is for some mortgage company.
I also get messages appearing on screen when I'm offline saying that I or some other program have requested information from 'such-and-such' a website and asking me which internet connection I wish to use to view it. I have no idea what's going on!

Mossopp

I downloaded, installed and ran the anti-virus. It found 18 virus's - 8 could be healed but 10 of them couldn't so I had to completely remove the infected files. The ones that I had to remove had all been infected with some kind of 'Trojan Horse' virus.
However, even after doing all this, I'm still plauged with pop-ups!
I think it's time to admit defeat... :(

check and see if anything is installed in program files lately since this happened. the program listing in add/remove programs isnt always complete.

see if theres anything new you dont recognise then tell us what you find

re-run the spybot and adaware.

I have done - several times. I delete the problems only to find that they have returned the very next time I run a scan!

secondly when do the popups pop up ?

The first one - which just says 'page not found' appears approx 30 seconds after I go online. After this I get the 'free polyphonic ringtone' pop-up appearing about once or twice a minute for about 10 minutes. After that I only get one pop-up about every 5 or 10 minutes.

This anti-virus I installed earlier this evening clearly isn't working. I deleted all 18 viruses that it discovered at around 8pm. It's now 11pm and I've only spent 10 minutes online in the interim, yet in that short space of time I've somehow managed to contract 8 new virus's!
If that anti-virus was doing it's job this wouldn't have happened!!!

I deleted my KaZaA a loooong time ago. First of all, when you download a file from KaZaA there's a 70% chance that it's corrupt or fake, and second of all... well the first reason is good enough. With mIRC available, who needs KaZaA?

By the way, if anyone has trouble using mIRC, tell me by PM, and if we have enough people I'll make a tutorial thread. That way we'll never have to download fake movies and bad mp3s!! :D

it is easier to try and sort out smaller problems for sure, but sometimes if it isnt possible to sort out the smaller ones ... then unfortunately a complete backup/format/reinstall is a better solution :(

speaking from experience tho, as long as your OS is still intact, then technically the machine is salvageable

Kate

I really am gonna have to go off to bed now cos I've been running myself into the ground recently and I need some sleep. Thanks to everyone who's tried to help me with this problem. It's greatly appreciated.
