As for me, in no particular order, here it goes:
Eminem
Natalie Imbruglia (...um, the first album... not so sure about her latest)
Jason Wade (from Lifehouse for those of you who don't know..)
Alanis Morrisette
Coldplay
and... Avril.. ok ok, before someone starts throwing rocks at me let me just say that she may be no poet, but she can write good songs...

Our time? What is OUR time? Do you think this generations time? That would be 80s, 90s and 2000s right?
80s- Freddie Mercury, Mark Knopfler, Bernnie Taupin, Axl Rose...
90s - Kurt Cobain, Linda Perry...
2000s- hmmm... V.Polyenko?

But the true masters of the trade came before that: Stevie Wonder, Bod Dylan, Roger Waters, Ray Davies, Don McLean ...

EMINEM

I agree.

Bjork, Tori Amos are also really great at writing. I think some pop acts are great as well, Pete Wentz (of FAll Out Boy) for example. I love listening to him talk about how he writes his lyrics and the reasoning behind the formatting of them.

I hardly follow western acts any more but I'd like to believe Shiina Ringo (currently of Tokyo Jihen) to be one of the bests.

I like that someone said Poe. It makes me giddy.

people will probably be annoyed on when i say this but on lindsay lohans "a little more personal (raw)" album her lyrics are deep, i think its an unheard album & i personally like her voice, & its not like i have bad taste bc i enjoy mariah carey, christina aguilera as well.

Someone wrote years ago:
ok john schaffer (iced earth)
And I totally agree, allthough his name is JON Schaffer

Besides Jon Schaffer you also have Lex Icon (The Kovenant) and Byron (Bal-Sagoth). Extremely good lyricists... people just haven't the ability to enjoy and cherish their skills because of their heavy/extreme choice of music - which is what their lyrics fit the most of course :D
