Despite the fact that the competition is more than six months later, the works have already started!Finland got the respected artists from the biggest labels from the country, the list includes a metal band,Thunderstone,an old pop singer and a pop idol candidate.Norway declared the names of the songs and Ireland determined the artist for the stage.Established and well-respected traditional Irish musicians Dervish are RTÉ's internally selected representative for the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki. Some countries are to reveal the deadlines for submission of the songs

The theme of this years Eurovision has been revealed!True Fantasy in Finland. The first theme was used in 2002,and has been used since then. Here is a quick remind of those.

Tallinn 2002 - Modern Fairytale

Riga 2003 - Magical Rendez-Vous

Istanbul 2004 - Under The Same Sky

Kyiv 2005 - Awakening

Athens 2006 - Feel The Rhythm

Helsinki 2007 - True Fantasy

True fantasy

The theme is out!

YLE, the Eurovision 2007 Eurovision Song Contest broadcaster, the European broadcasting union EBU and T.E.A.M., who hold the commercial right of the contest, announced today during a press conference that the official theme for the 2007 event will be True fantasy. After Greece invited us to Feel the rhythm in 2006 it's another motto that leaves a big margin for your imagination...
It is confirmed that both EBU and YLE will be raising the stakes. The plan is to offer the global audience (as the Eurovision Song Contest is not viewed in Europe only anymore) an unprecedent experience. A real dream come true. This will be accomplished by amazing stage and TV events that will portray Finland's powerful diversity and intriguing contrasts.

We also want the Finnish theme to embrace Finland and Finnishness in terms of the polarities associated with our country: light vs. darkness, northern fells vs. islands in the south, our strong bond to nature vs. fast technological development, taciturnity against inner strength and creative madness, as showcased by Lordi in an original way, defines YLE's executive producer Heikki Seppälä.

Design agency Dog Design will be responsible for the theme design of the 2007 contest with Ilona Ilottu, Petri Salmela and Eeva Sivula as members. The set will be designed by a group of students from the University of Art and Design in Helsinki: Kristian Schmidt, Jenni Viitanen, Samuli Laine and Kalle Ahonen.

Greece has decided to send Tamta to Eurovision, - who so far has only had two hits in Greece, and one is Tornero, last year's Romanian entry as a duet with Mihai Trăistariu. She's not Greek herself and some people find her not a good choice for that reason.

Here's an article about the nomination and all:

Or is it gonna be a different style of song? Hip hop hasn't worked so far in Eurovision.

Morissey to Eurovision!!!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/news/20070109_morissey.shtml
Morrissey for Eurovision?

Star may pen and perform our track

09 Jan 07 - It does seem like an unlikely combination, but the BBC have confirmed Morissey is in talks over this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

They say he’s thinking of penning the track for our entry, but rumours are rife he may even step into the shoes of the likes of ABBA and perform it as well.

Last year Daz Sampson failed miserably and Moz piped up to let people know of his disappointment:
“I was horrified but not surprised to see the UK fail."
Morrissey
“I was horrified but not surprised to see the UK fail. Why didn’t they ask me?”

Now it appears they have. His record label say he received a letter asking him to get involved and we’re told he is a huge fan of the show.

There is no word yet from the man himself.

So what do you guys think about that?

Here in Austria it's top secret! An expert group will choose our entry somewhere in January. The organizers have come to the conclusion that the Austrian people is way too stupid to vote for a suitable candidate, AND THEY ARE COMPLETELY RIGHT. In our 'Starmania contest' the most talented performers are consequently voted out of the show. Is it only Austria or are other countries the same, that frustrated females choose their dreamboys in such votes and the really promising performers are dropped early in the contest?

So, Estonia will be represented by Gerli Padar and her song is "Partners in Crime"

The Norwegian candidate will be elected next saturday. Today we finished all the semi-finals, and next friday there will be a "last chance competition" for those who came third and fourth in the semi-finals ... and on saturday there will be 8 artists left to be elected.

Among the favorites is a dance-techno band called Infinity doing comeback. They were huge in the middle of the 90s here in Scandinavia. And then there's a shitty punkpop-band who won tonight. So yeah, it will be another say year for eurovision song contest on norway's behalf. But I'm hoping Infinity will pull it through tho. We'll know in a week :)

Is it only Austria or are other countries the same, that frustrated females choose their dreamboys in such votes and the really promising performers are dropped early in the contest?

The norwegian winner is horrible. This famous norwegian actress (stage actress, not movie) singing a happy latino song with an extremely bad english accent, and it's all just icky and disgusting. Check it out here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=rX2qNQbI0Jk
There were other songs I'd like to see instead of that specific song. I'm dissappointed over my own country. The two recent years we've actually sent the best alternative to the finals, but this year we've gone several steps back *sigh*.

And I actually think the danish song was ok. Not that I like the song, but the concept wasn't so bad. I'm getting some of the same vibes as Diva International, but that WAS something different. Hehehe. It might go far. As for the norwegian song; I hope it doesn't get through the semi finals!!

You can say that again! And I've been hating them every single year. I wish I was a dictator when it came to Eurovision in Norway. Hahahaha.

There were actually a song or two in the finals that I think could've been okay. I didn't like them either, but at least they were ... well, better. Hehehe. I think I actually would like to see Infinity (a dance/techno band) win, but they didn't make the super final. (we have a system of semi finals, final and a super final. Final and super final is done after eachother the same evening). Not a very good song for my taste, but the chorus WAS catchy and I think the concept was Eurovision material. Hehehe. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNHJWDXyw5U

The guy sounds like a dork, hehe, but he's actually quite a cool guy. Just that he could've done something else than making that voice.. but yeah, that and this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kYE3wGbrB0) would've been tons better (allthough this last one is a punk song, and I hate punk... but at least it's _better_ than the one that won!) :)

There... my eurovision rant for the year. Hehehe.

I'll wait to see the finished article ie the final selections and not the preselections because they don't mean anything.

I don't know if has been posted but Cyprus decided that Evridiki ( for the third time, I think ) will represent Cyprus. Not only that, but they decided that the song will be sung in French and also it's got a distinct europop flavour i.e. It's not bad! I think they might turn to pop/electronica this year which I prefer to the posing old-fashioned hard rock of the last 2 years.
I hope they don't change it a lot, maybe just the ending which is a bit abrupt to fit the 3 minute rule , but here's an early version:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=tQMtaNzYHDI

I'd like to see Evridiki ( or Euridice, more anglosised ) get revenge for Kate Ryan last year. This is what Kate should have done with her song ( not compromise it to fit the "eurovision" sound as she did ).
So, I haven't listened to the other songs, but is there anything to top Cyprus at all? It's funny how the Greeks have turned from zeros to heroes in recent years...total transformation

The song is written by Korgialas, he's a very promising new Greek singer/songwriter who had a very big hit last year in Greece:

Not only that, but they decided that the song will be sung in French and also it's got a distinct europop flavour i.e. It's not bad! I think they might turn to pop/electronica this year which I prefer to the posing old-fashioned hard rock of the last 2 years.
I hope they don't change it a lot, maybe just the ending which is a bit abrupt to fit the 3 minute rule , but here's an early version:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=tQMtaNzYHDI

...except for the Cypriot entry, which is really rather good. Singing in French is a very brave decision, though.

Just having the title in French was enough to prevent Kate Ryan advancing to the final, according to haku. Singing in French should guarantee 12 points from France, but nul points from a number of countries I can think of. I don't know that it was compromising to sound more Eurovision that did for Kate. Wasn't it still too contemporary for the audience? It took thirty years for hard rock to win Eurovision, it might take as long for the audience to feel comfortable with electronic music.

It didn't take hard rock 30 years to win Eurovision it took them 2 years LOL ( if you know what I mean )
Electronic music is more accessible imo...I wonder if there any other similar songs this year or is it just Cuprus?
But if Cyprus is succesful this year maybe the next there will be more to follow.

I didn't know that "Hellas" hasn't picked the song that is going to Eurovision yet, but apparently the selection is now on Greek national channel NET and I ended up watching it ;)
I hope I last the full excrutiating 3 hours...I hear they will have a few special guests ( entries from other countries who will perform )
They got this guy from Romania's last year's entry now...how many times has he lip synched to Tornero? :p
The guy has some vocal range apparently - would rivar Mariah Carey easily

it's had been said that the next german popstars band "Monrose" want to anticipate for the eurovision 07 with the song "Even heaven cries"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAIRZM7CYWQ
(a performance from that song during a tv show)

but the audience have to decide in march or whatever who will go to eurovision...don't know which other bands want to be at that specific show.

"Monrose" are the new "No Angels" (most successfully german girlgroup in europe who splitted 2004 but are now back again*yeah**lol*) I don't like Monrose but "Even heaven cries" is the best song from their album.
I want Stefan Raab back on stage :p ("Wadde hadde du de da"!!*lol*)

DJ bobo from Switzerland "Vampires Are alive" is the official entry and they've just appeared in the Greek selection show, and it's another dance song with electro elements - it's even more threatrical than Cyprus, the group are straight from a freak show.

So yeah that is another strong candidate I think, and this is the trend of this year. I think lots of people who like electropop/dance will be pleased.

for me it was predictable, I was also thinking why it hasn't happened all this time...though I prefer cyprus to this one

The first candidate for the song for Greece is shocking, some Armenian dude
and Tapta is just a candidate but I though they picked her up already
And she sings some rubbish ballad with eastern elements and she's way off tune. 2 performers so far and neither is Greek

some freaking joke this

Greece will completely bomb this year jugding from this rubbish. If they choose this one I expect relegation ;)
Dantis is now on stage ( guy who wrote my Number 1 ) and sings a "rock 'n' roll" song "You're no Madonna" and it sucks beyond comprehension.

Now on stage the Belarus ( is it the first time ) entry , music by Philip Kirkorov :D
It's a Ricky Martin type of song, a bit weak in my opinion. Still better than any of the songs in the Greek preselection.

now the Bulgarian entry. They went for the ethnic disco , it's pretty quirky but cool actually ;)

So the surprise happened! It's neither Tamta or Dantes but the other kid, Sarbel with Yiassou Maria ( what a silly title ). The song is "shake It" part 2. To be honest the other two songs were even worse and this one is at least catchy.
I predict a very deserved flop for Greece this year. They need new ideas.
But perhaps it can grab a qualifying place for next year since this formula has worked before...and the guy's pretty comfortable on stage.

I thought your tastes in music were better. Wasn't impressed when I heard it a few weeks ago and I'm not impressed now.

The group is in Greece now where they presented the song ( got very good reviews by everybody in Greece ) and they're in talks with a Greek stage production company about their stage show. If they alter their stage show into something more spectacular this is going to cruise this year's contest. The song really deserves it so I hope they present it as it ought to be.
They need more people on stage.
As a song in itself, it blows Ruslana away everytime but it needs a better presentation.
She should come flying from the top of the stage on those angel wings ;)

The girl said yesterday on a Greek morning tv program that she feels "fantastic" being in Greece cause everybody has embraced them so I just hope they do something good about their song now.
This song has to win this year.

dont get me wrong, the girl can sing.... the song is a bit weird lyrically, though very bulgarian folky (and i mean real folk, not the new poop-folk chalga stuff), but mayby this is because i understand what she is saying.. kind of, since she moans a lot... and the drumming is great, but with such stage performance it will not even pass the semi.......the girl has NO presence....but if they work on some crazy performance, sure, at least its original... though her moaning will killl meeeeeeeeee listening to it

My comments on the entries

Belarus ( yeah I heard it on the Greek selection show - it doesn't do it for me and a little bit of this and a little bit of that but it's not powerful - it will fail in the semi stage imo )
Denmark ( oh dear, is that a transexual? never mind, very weak song, awful performance )
Norway ( truly awful and very kitsch disco/electro performance of old by a hapless duo )
Albania ( a duo singing some kind of quirky Balkan ballad - the singing is a bit annoying and the orchestration all over the place- choruses are nice though)
Armenia ( like last year's entry only a lot slower - another ballad in English with an Oriental touch - it's very mediocre and won't make an impression imo. They won't do it twice in a row.
Belgium ( haha, what the hell? a disco/soul ballad straight from the 70's? Motown? Tha style died 30 years ago! really incredible they feel they have to revive something like that in Eurovision - The music is more pleasant that the others, I guess. the whole group wears shades :none:
Bulgaria ( as I explained above my favourite song so far and I have discussed it in length )
Cyprus ( my second favourite - go Cyprus! )
Estonia ( another "rock" effort in a modern style that didn't quite catch up with ESC - mediocre song and static performances. Nothing special. They try but they're no Vanilla ninja )
Finland ( like Estonia's only a bit "heavier". Too serious for ESC. Unimpressive )
Fed Macedonia ( Balkan ballad - the usual stuff only this time sung by a woman. Big pompose choruses and long legs. )
Greece ( As I said I don't think Greece will do great this year. Rehashing the same ideas and choreography will get people tired of it. )
Iceland: Another one of those heavy rock ballads. I listened to the Icelendic version and it's decent. It might be better in English. However this type of song hasn't done well in recent years. One I like. They managed to fit a guitar solo there as well. Strong performance.
Ireland: Wow, very folkey this one, beware  - They're desperately trying to replicate their former glories but this is way too Irish and too folkey imo. I really can't see who will vote for this one, it's not Eurovision material, but Irish folk contest material. Certain FLOP.
Israel: The controversial Israeli song. (ok, they obviously have to change the lyrics - This is a bit of a farcical song, remember Lithuania last year? Well, this is even worse it's got a "rock" chorus and they change styles in the middle of the song singing in different languages etc. It's not eurovision, it's the comedy central.
Latvia Is the questa Notte? Really stupid this, like Il Devo or something similar. Semi operatic, semi pop. CRAP
Malta: This is a gypsy ballad, violins and all. Really dunno how the public will react to this, it might do well as the Maltese ballads ususally do. For me it's boring but I have to listen to a better version.
Moldova: A gothic rock song in Eurovision? yeah that's what it is! Very unusual for ESC to do well.
Montengro: AOR with a Balkan touch. Very limited.
Holland: Yet another ballad turn disco. Boring, unoriginal, no chance once again for the Netherlands. They're really bombing it year after year.
Norway: Disco/Latin style. She sings the chorus in spanish toi fit the style. Very trite. No glory for Norway this year, though with the absence of decent songs they might be voting for this one which is a shame.
Poland: American r'n'b style with rap.. There's no way they will vote for something like this one. Girl trying to sing like Beyonce. I changes halkfway into another rthythm abruptly and then back to the beginning etc. No coherence at all.
Romania: Proper kitsch. A guy wearing a taxudo and a hat like Abraham's Lilcoln' sings in different languages and different styles. Then another dude sings in Russian. Another shocker after Israel, wonder who votes for these ones. It's a disgrace actually.
Slovenia: Another Balkan ballad. Woman's voice is so out of tune it's difficult to listen. It then turns into an Il Devo style of song. RUBBISH but lots of cleavage.
Spain: Eurodisco by a Spanish boyband. It might actually get points due to the fact that there are so many rubbish songs this year - and they have to vote for something at the end of the day. It's got verve but of course it's totally unoriginal.
Switzerland[b]: I have commented on the Swiss before, they're trying to cash in on the Lordi success in a different way.
[b]Turkey: It's ok, it's got a good rthythm and might do well after all. Very repetitive though

Verdict: another rubbish selection of songs so far with the obvious exception of Bulgaria, Cyprus and Iceland which are the only songs I like.

I've now watched all the videos of songs selected so far on YouTube. I pretty much agree with spyretto about a lot of the songs. Most of them are really poor, extremely bad even for Eurovision. To avoid repetition, I'll only comment on the songs where I have a different opinion or something new to add.

Andorra A song that was selected very recently. It's a slightly punky rock song performed by an all-male band. I really like it. I love the lead singer's faux-cockney accent when he sings in English. My second-favourite song just from the sound. Listening to it again, I realised the lyrics are about protecting the environment. This one is definitely getting my vote.

Belgium Totally seventies, but fashion be damned, it's not bad at least compared to most of the dross this year.

Bulgaria I disagree with spy. It's good, but it's too Balkan for my taste. I expect it to do very well, though. Bulgaria is well-placed to benefit from both the Balkan and Slavic voting blocs and may be unbeatable.

Cyprus Wow! Electronic dance music with French lyrics. It's completely different from all the other entries. There hasn't been a Eurovision song I've liked this much since 'Take Me To Your Heaven' in 1999. But I thought Kate Ryan was the best for years last year and she was knocked out in the semi, so that's no guarantee of success. This one is better and more distinctive, though. I hope it's not too avant-garde or too French for the voters. Do I need to mention that it's my favourite song this year?

Iceland I find this one boring. Sorry, spy.

Israel It's so unbelievably bad it has to be seen - once. Don't say I didn't warn you if you develop post-traumatic stress disorder afterwards. Nuclear war is a difficult subject for a comic song, although the brilliant Tom Lehrer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Lehrer) certainly managed to do it well. These people have no talent. A potentially good idea, but lousy execution.

Netherlands I disagree with spy. It's certainly dated, but it's much more listenable than most.

Romania It had to happen after Lordi won last year. Romania enters with a Dracula song. It's very funny and wonderfully kitsch. I can just picture all the Romanians I know hiding their faces behind their hands when this one comes up, but I enjoyed it. This song has a big problem, though: the Swiss entry.

Switzerland Rather than use Switzerland's own export, Frankenstein's Monster, the Swiss rather unfairly decided to use the vampire idea that by rights belongs to Romania. It's more professional, not as kitsch as Romania's entry, and actually has rather good music. The Swiss are obviously going for Lordi-style comedy and the more low-key approach the Romanians take in the video has more charm for me. I have to admit this is the better song, though. Actually, this is one of the ones I like most, although it's not as good as last year's Lordi.

Thanks for mentioning us twice, however, I can't help but agreeing that this year's song from Norway sucks a lot. Hehehe.

There were a couple of other alternatives which I think would've done much better than this one in the the international finals. So it's not that we don't have the alternatives ... (well, actually I guess that might be the problem... None of the songs were GOOD!) but the norwegian public seem to vote for the most fucked up song each year. Allthough, last year was actually fair enough - the best song won and it was pretty decent, but not what europe wanted of course :D Nothing could beat Finland. But this year we're screwed all over either wait. We won't make the semi with this one, I'm sure. Hahaha.

spy, ok so i re-listened and i have to admit that i now really like the song.... though, i have to agree its a bit too balkan and most likely too much balkan for westerners and people up north.

But i am happy to see people that can actually sing and professional performers.... i looked them up on youtube and i found an interwview for Eurovision that they gave - their english is really bad, but i can tell they are genuine and nice people. Elitsa also reminds me of Alanis Morissette  must be the jaw, the eyes, the hair, and they body type .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTQdIN_Ss-k&mode=related&search=

Stoyan yankulov looks like he came straight from the 80s  but i know him from before, he is the most famous bulgarian drummer/percussionist - and man, he is good.
Elitsa is almost my age - born in '77 and studied in Special Music schools since 1st grade! first for folklore and then for percussions.

oh and i wanted to add that they should invite 3 female folk singers to acompany her in the chorus.. which makes it really like bulgarian folk (the mystery of the bulgarian voices for example, where the women's voices are layered and few franctions apart so it sounds like an echo) - i thought of it because in the original (the studio recording) you can hear in the chorus more than one voice - and it sounds SO much better than the life performance

The songs from Georgia and Lithuania have now been selected. All the songs so far are listed here (http://eurovisionfan.blogspot.com/) and mp3s can be downloaded from links there.

Georgia A decidedly mediocre song, but the singer is very pretty.

Lithuania A pleasant slow ballad, but nothing special or memorable.

Romania's song has been disqualified because a fragment of it had been performed before. That's good news for Switzerland.

Listening to the better ones again, I think I was too unenthusiastic about Belgium's song. It's actually fairly good. It will probably bomb, though, because that sort of retro song usually does badly in the voting.

I watched the Romanian final like two weeks ago and the best song for me was the Spanish one,the guy in 2002 was singing. The winner was not impressive.

Greece has a normal song this year, can be improved by the stage act.

I agree with many of you about the Bulgarian song,i like it.

ok, let me go back to listen to Bulgaria's song a 100th time now, do I still like it? :p
get the mp3 version, it's good.

Greece has a normal song this year, can be improved by the stage act.

The guy got stage presence and if you think about it, song's better than that horrendous "Shake it" that won 3rd place 4 years ago. Aren't the Greek songs a bit overrated in general?
They're really getting cheeky in Greece now thinking 1) they will win or at least get top 5 with this one because europe voted this stuff before and will continue to do so, so they got eurovision by the balls now :p 2) put some more elements of kitsch to "enhance" the stage presence to give more Greek than oriental flavour, how about 100 bouzuki players in the middle of the song..oh wait they're not allowed.
What about 2 gigantic pots oozing tzatziki and taramosalata on some equally gigantic pitta bread replcas made of plastic?? that would be pure aphrodisiac delight ...ta ra ram Yassou, Maria, Yassou spyretto yassou everybodyyyy, yasou, yamas, yia harantan, moussakaaaa!!

Thanks for mentioning us twice, however, I can't help but agreeing that this year's song from Norway sucks a lot. Hehehe.

Yeah, I thought I made a mistake there...did I confuse Norway with somebody else? that horrible horrible song, the electrokitsch duo? oh well, yet another kitsch song then :p

So Holland is good, simon? Don't you find it excruciatingly unoriginal and boring? Yeah maybe it's gonna make it to the final by the sympathy vote. That or Iceland...

Now for the other ones

Georgia sounds pretty cool for first entry. not sure if it's gonna make it to the final but it's definitely interesting and she's got a good voice. I hope I don't hate it after a few listening sessions.
Lithuania Sounds overall pleasant but the way I see it it might be passed unnoticed.
Croatia So no Balkan ballad for Croatia this year but a "Carlos Santana" type of song. Oh man, that live version is really BAD :p

Hmm, the Belgium entry is not bad after all, despte horribly dated. Jamiroquay does that for years ( only with better songs of course ) But they can make it to the final with this one, I guess? Would spread even more embarassment. So which ones of the kitsch songs will be a blast? Romania? Israel? Denmark? another one? the vampires perhaps?

I can envision mid Europeans voting for the Israeli entry like mad if it's allowed to compete. I probably would

I think they do and they have a sense of humour too. It's called "Love in a French way" or similar and it perfectly represents the country. LOL. This rubbish has very good chances to score high... really... really high.

you're having a laugh there forre!

Lets add this to the rest of the "cool" songs, so we have Denmark, Israel, Romania, and France so far..4 songs(!) twice as many as last year's, and it must be a record for the ESC...and there still might be more! So who will step into Lithuania's shoes and win the battle of the jokers this year?
and will we see a joker win the whole contest one day?

Soooo

8 points to Denmark!
9 points to France!!
10 points to Romania!!

and the 12 points from spy go to:

yeaaah!!! Israel! push the button you ayatollahs!!

I forgot to mention the maths sign in front of those points..it's the MINUS sign

( feels so exciting to watch Eurovision to see if any of those 4 sods will score high this year...it might be all 4 of them ..oh yeah, so exciting indeed :hooligan:

With all the Slavic and Nordic countries, it's become impossible for a song in French to win Eurovision, so we can really send any crap we want, it'll make little difference on the final result.
Fatals Picards' song is essentially a joke and a mockery of the dominance of English actually since it's in horrendous Franglais.

Fatals Picards (http://www.fatalspicards.com/) is a band mainly based on parodic humor, here's another of their songs 'Goldorak Est Mort (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKWWTOlhVoc)' to get an idea.

That's about right. None of the winning songs were sung completely in any other language than English since 1991. The last winner singing fully in other than English language was Carola in 1991(Swedish) and maybe Dana International 1998. Though Dana's lyrics were kinda international "Viva-la-viva-viva-victoria-afrodita-cleopatra..." You want to win - you go English. :coctail:

I part-agree with spyretto! Serbia always had a strong, nice song (it's not that I live in Serbia, the quality is what I'm talking about), but it's the first time Serbia is on her own on Eurovision... (it was Yugoslavia, Serbia & Montenegro, and now we're alone), so our time is yet to come, and we're not legends so far.

Gosh, I remember 2004. when Zeljko Joksimovic was representing Serbia & Montenegro with "Lane moje". It was such a hit, and just to remind you, it was second (and also btw, we showed up after 15 years)...

People from Balkan, really sing with emotion. And if the song is not produced well, or mixed, I really forgive the artist... couse I really feel so "in the song".

Edit: dradeel, I believe you're talking about Sertab Erener and "Every way that I can"... I still love that song! ;)

Yeah as crazy malchik says Lane moje anybody? Wasn't it 2nd or 3rd? I think it was 2nd...and those kids from Serbia/Montenegro two years ago?

I'm telling you if you add up what Serbia+Turkey+Greece ( not to metion Romania ) have done in the last 5 years they're real legends compared to the pitiful Frances and the Uks.
The only reason Serbia hasn't won the ESC already is because of the language barrier.

Secret Garden? Katrina and the Waves? that's anciient history dradeel How old are you to remember all that, 55? :p

That's right. Wasn't that in the early 80s? Or was it as late as 1990? I'm getting different flashbacks. No, I didn't see it at the time, but I've seen it later. Hehehe.
Yeh, I remember those ethno years.
They were the best :D A funny detail about Secret Garden in 95 is that the same guy making that song (and playing the flute if I'm not mistaken) made the song "La Det Swinge" that won 10 years earlier. That's also the only 2 victories for Norway. Hehehe.

spyretto
09-03-2007, 18:54
There weren't any ethno years, common. Secret Garden was TOTALLY out of the ordinary when they won. It wasn't even a single song that resembled theirs and came after them, it was a one-off, don't you remember?

(what you might mean by "ethnic" is the Celtic/Nordic years? )

But that song is now legendary, I don't know what prompted the Norwegian representatives to make such a bold and great move, it wasn't the only time that Norway won but it's been downhill for Norway since then. This year's song is the lowliest point of that downward slide.
In that sense Norway is no better than France, the UK, Ireland etc. Just a sad journey into Eurovision obscurity.

Ethno years are the ones that started in the last few years with Ruslana and Sertab... and they continue to be very influential with Eurovision.

By the way, I said to coolasfcuk that Turkey will not win...I take it back now in the light of this new song.
One can see that certain countries don't care anymore, easy to see who. Others have won it but still care. And there are the ones who care too much. I know for a fact that the Russians are dying to win this ;)
and they will soon - politics? nonsense, who cares wins :p

The Brits always say oh we need to try better next year and they always blow it when the crucial time comes. For them making an effort equates to sending someone famous. Don't know about the other 3.

Look who won it in this decade: 2 Scandinavian countries and the rest 5 from Eastern Europe. do they need even more proof that the game is lost?
It's not politics, if it's politics then how the hell have Turkey and Greece won? nobody likes them. It's just making an effort and sending the right song. I know for a fact that the rest are "dying" to vote for the UK, France and all the other losers...

dradeel
09-03-2007, 19:28
It wasn't even a single song that resembled theirs and came after them, it was a one-off, don't you remember?
It resembled Secret Garden's music. They had released stuff before that date that are in the same vicinity. It's just that they mostly do instrumental stuff... vocals had to be added because of Eurovision rules :) The year after there were some ethno songs coming off after Nocturne. People understood that they could take another turn on things - but none won as it's really a stupid idea to try and copy off something like that. But yeah, true what you're saying that the real ethno years is what we've seen in the later times. Allthough it's not "true" in terms of the use of accoustic instruments and so on. It's mostly popish computerized stuff... (I'm talking especially about the drum beats. Hehe.)

Norway has had its ups and downs. The late 90s were pitiful, indeed... but the last 2 years have been quite okay from Norway's side imo. You can't say that Wigwam wasn't a new vitamin-injection to a boring competition -- even if you disliked them. Hehe. It's just good that people try out something new. :)

So I will highly disagree that there has been nothing but a downward slide for norway. But I agree that this year's song has really hit the bottom. I can't see us vote for a song worse than this... if not Jahn Teigen or Tor Endresen sends another song to Eurovision just to get 0 or 1 point. :D They've been there like 3-4 times each, and neither have gotten more than that one point I think. Hehehe. Well, more or less.

Last year must've been the best eurovision in extremely many years. I'd say that between the mid 90s and to last year there haven't been a better eurovision. Actually there hasn't been anything good in that time (Well, I shouldn't forget the year when t.A.T.u. played. They were the only song that year. 2003 was it?). The lovely recent few years you talk about - except last year - has been miiiiserable. The music has been extremely bad. Every single year I sit and watch the telly and wonder "Wtf am I sitting here and listening to this crap for?!" - but I never learn. Lordi winning was excactly the reason why I've survived all the years I guess. Hahahaha. Cause sometimes there is a jewel among the mountains of garbage.

As a sidenote: throughout those year I haven't been happy about the norwegian representation either. I'm not sitting on any high horse thinking Norway is a great Eurovision nation. We had 85, 95 and kinda 05 and 06... So yeah, Norway pretty much suck big time. Hahahaha.

But I guess the fact is that it's not single countries that suck really ... it's the whole competition that has been weakened.

spyretto
09-03-2007, 19:44
ok, maybe it's not a total downwards slide...hm I forgot about Wigwam and that drunk guy :p
They paved the way for Lordi...
But to me, watching Eurovision in the 90's Norway was HUGE...It was all Norway and Ireland.
That's why I referred to recent years as a downward slide. Last year the song was good but it did very poorly.
I mean, if you consider that Finland and Denmark won it in this decade, Sweden at the end of the last and that the Scandinavians are doing well, Norway is the last cog in the Nordic machine right now. But are they really considered Western Europe or something else? Is Finland really western Europe?

Before Eurovision was limited to a few countries ( 15-20 or so ) mostly from Western Europe and the poor countries like Greece had to sing in their own language and we'd be hammered every time - no matter the song - the only points we'd get was from Cyprus ( because of the politics )
But hey in this decade EVERYTHING changed, everybody wants to go to that contest now, we're talking over 40 countries, and they had to relegate some countries if they didn't do well, but then they came up with the fantastic idea of having the semi final on Thursday and the final on Saturday and now everybody is in, and they sing in English if they want and wow
Eastern Europe is getting their revenge for all these years of winning nothing.
Isn't it awesome? I think the same will happen this year as well, Eastern European countries just care more

Oh, I just wanted to say: Secret Garden are still releasing albums, they're legendary, they released an album last year that did very well in the Greek charts. it was on the top 20. Nocturne is considered a classic song, you can hear it in documentaries, random programs, stuff like that ;)

dradeel

Nonoo... of course not. I wasn't commenting the western europe-thingie. I was commenting the norwegian downward slide and your opinion of things getting better. Hehehehe.
Secret Garden are still releasing albums, they're legendary,
I know. Hehehe. If you take Rolf Løvland in particular he's sold millions of records as he's made a dozen of famous songs with other people (latest example I guess is "You Raise Me Up" which is originally a Secret Garden song, aye?). And yeah... Secret Garden is still a winner too. But we don't hear much of him here in Norway actually. There were no commercials for their last album, no nothing. I can't remember hearing about them for years at least... I think they've moved the offense above the norwegian market ;)

2 times in a short while. You have that one singer-guy that sang it all alone and made it super famous, and then Westlife covered it just a little while after... and then you have the original song of course (might be other covers I don't know about, but those two are more than enough money-wise imo ;)). I've been away for a week and so many new songs have been selected. Here's my take on them:

Croatia A pleasant, though not very exciting song. It should get a lot of votes from the Balkans.

France Spyretto said they would be this year's Iceland rather than this year's Lithuania. I'm not sure. Silvia Night's mistake was that the joke was too subtle and you needed to understand the lyrics to get it. Eurovision audiences don't do subtlety. The actual joke is way too subtle, but the performance makes it very clear it's a joke entry.

Germany really doesn't get Eurovision. It's a genuinely good song which will presumably be performed in English, but it's probably far too sophisticated and surely far too old-fashioned for the audience.

Romania The Dracula song was sadly disqualified. Its replacement is really dreadful, but is sung in several languages in a blatant attempt at pandering to strategically important nationalities.

Serbia This is an example of Serbia, the Eurovision superpower? It's a typical Balkan Eurovision song. Nothing to get excited about.

Sweden really is a Eurovision superpower. They usually do well, although they haven't won since 1999. This entry is amazing. Rather than another Abba pastiche, this year it's Rocky Horror. It blows the Danish drag queen completely out of the water. It must be one of the campest entries to Eurovision I've ever seen, which is saying something, but it's backed up with a really strong crowd-pleasing song. This is the sort of thing that wins. It's good to see Sweden back on form.

Turkey It's one of the better entries, but it's really repetitive.

To recap, I actually like the entries from Andorra, Cyprus, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland.

Cyprus remains my personal favourite, but I can't picture electronic dance music with French vocals winning or even performing particularly well. Top ten or even top fifteen would be good. It may well not get through the semi.

I really like Andorra, but it's far too cool and alternative for Eurovision. It will probably go out in the semi.

I also really like Sweden, which is nice because I have a suspicion it will win. If Dana International could do it, surely this guy can. If it doesn't win, I'll be gutted.

Switzerland has hands-down the best joke song. It should reach the top ten, but I don't think they can do a Lordi as Switzerland isn't in a voting bloc.

Germany will finish a long way down the table, but I think they're resigned to that.

ok, so I finally saw Turkey's live performance - its like almost 1:1 with Elena's win couple of years ago - in english, catchy, dancy and with a little ethno throw in in the middle... though i think i enjoyed Elena's better, this one could as well be a winner... though i still like the turkish song that i thought was the finalist more :D

Sweden.... well, i enjoyed the Ark live, but their own songs seemed a bit better, thats a little too much for my taste, but you can tell they are good musicialns/entertainers, so who knows...

I also just saw Andorra, its like one of those Chemical Romance groups...jeez, they made it into the Eurovision as well, we just cant get rid of them, eh? LoL... anyways, good effort though, in fact i prefer those to the monsters of last year

The running order is very important. Last year, most of the countries in the second half of the semi-final qualified for the final, but only one of the countries in the first half. Similarly, most of the highest scoring songs in the final were in the second half. Eurovision voters not only don't do subtlety, they have goldfish memories too.

It seems the only country taking part that hasn't yet selected its entry is the United Kindom, which decides tomorrow, 17 March.

Here's my rundown on the other entries that haven't been commented on so far:

Austria rejoins the contest with Eric Papilaya performing a rock song. It's better than most of the entries, but it doesn't grab me.

Czech Republic joins the contest this year. The entry is a number growled by an all-male rock band. It's actually fairly good.

Hungary is another new entry. It's a blues ballad performed by a solo female vocalist. It's fairly good, although her voice is rather throaty.

Portugal is going Latin American. It's a pleasant, upbeat number, much better than Norway's Latino effort.

Russia usually does very well thanks largely to the Russian minorities in several countries. This song is a break from the usual Russian entry because it sounds very American. It's performed by a trio of uberbabes. There's no video yet on YouTube, but judging by the lyrics, the performance will probably be very sexy. It's definitely one of the most competitive songs and combined with the sexiness and the fact it's the Russian entry, it has to be one of the favourites to win. It's not one of my personal favourites, though - it's more Britney Spears than Britney herself and I prefer a less manufactured style.

Ukraine has gone for a joke entry with a guy who looks like Dame Edna Everage wrapped in tinfoil. It's really awful, but it will probably end up in the top ten.

It seems that only countries in Europe not participating this year are Italy, Slovakia and Luxembourg (I don't consider Lichtenstein, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City to be real countries, although I'd love to see the Vatican try Eurovision).

My tips to win: Russia, Sweden, Turkey, Greece or Bulgaria. Bulgaria is handicapped by the fact it's the first song in the semi-final and may be just too Balkan for western Europeans. If it gets through, it'll have the big advantage that people will have heard it before in the semi.

Cyprus and Andorra remain my personal favourites. Cyprus will now probably get knocked out in the semi because of its early placing. Andorra is near the end and so has a decent chance of getting through to the final, but I have no illusions that it'll be properly appreciated by the Eurovision audience.

Not bad but I can't make any prognosis at the moment. Everything is hanging on the live stage performance and we know that. Even a good song may end up at the bottom 10 if performed poorly.

The Russian entry is AMAZING!

- It's good but...it's in English??

The last time I checked this was EUROvision - not EnglishVision. The entire point of the contest was to spread music from all of Europe all over, how can you spread music from your country if it's all in English? That's rediculious! I'm just glad t.A.T.u. sang in Russian when they went to Eurovision. Who cares if you win! At least you put on a kick ass show! Dima Bilan was the ONLY Russian contestant after t.A.T.u. to even reach near their scores from 2003, and his song was in English. Singning in your own language is much better.

Other than that...

The song is very catchy, and extremely poppy/rockish. It's got that certain vibe we haven't heard from Eurovision before. I think the song is exactly what Russia needs to show that they're not just a reminant of the U.S.S.R., and that they're their own independant state with extreme opportunity. The song's lyrics - if looked at in terms of talking about the country - make sense. It's a perfect song, amazingly inclined for a Russian win as long as the performance stands up to the studio version.

It’s a dirty money track, Yeah,
Girls kick the flow!

Listen to me
All my girls get ready
We’ll make it easy

When I catch you picking me
You better get a chill
Boy you wanna take on me
Cuz I’m your killing pill

Can’t you see the way I move
My dress my flashy skin
Listen up you know I got
The place you’ve never been

Slow down
Boy you don’t wanna let me down
You better stop you know what!

Oh! Don’t call me funny bunny
I’ll blow your money money
I’ll get you to my bad ass
Spinning for you
Oh! I’ll make it easy honey
I’ll take your money yummy
I’ve got my bitches
Standing up next to me

So come and check it
So come and check it
So come and check it
My bad ass spinning for you (2x)

Watch out!

Keep on taking over you
It’s kinda getting free
Baby boy you know I still
Got sexy freak in me

Gotta tease you nasty guy
So take it don’t be shy
Put your cherry on my cake
And taste my cherry pie

Maybe I’ll take you
With me tonight
Maybe you’ll show me another way
And find a reason for me to stay
But something I must tell you!

Feel my vibration
Get it!

The rule about singing in your national language was changed after Ireland won the contest four times in five years and the next year the UK won. The contest was no longer a real competition.

There was less nationally distinctive music when the 'own language' rule applied because non-English-speaking countries desperately tried to have international appeal by singing generic Europop. Now they feel freer to have more nationally distinctive music because they know they have a chance. Turkey and Ukraine have even won that way. They'd never have won if they'd had to sing songs in Turkish or Ukrainian that nobody else could understand. The rule change has led to more musical diversity, not less.

Terry Wogan, the UK's Eurovision commentator and host of the qualification show, seems to have had a cunning plan. It had been narrowed down to the last two, Scooch and a rousing ballad sung by a young Frenchwoman called Cyndi (which Wogan had already made clear he favoured because it would be much more distinctive in the competition). Wogan announced Cyndi had won, but a few seconds after people had erupted in cheering, his idiot co-presenter screamed, "No Terry, it's Scooch!". So much for Terry's attempt to save his adopted nation's blushes. :p

To be fair, there were also worse ones. The first two eliminated (ex-Atomic Kitten Liz McClarnon and ex-East 17 Brian Harvey) both sounded like hell, real nul points entries. Hawkins & Brown (Justin Hawkins, ex-The Darkness) were the favourites and she was good, but his contribution really spoiled it and made it sound incoherent. Big Brovaz were actually quite good, although they didn't sound as good as they do on YouTube. The 'experts' were completely shocked when they didn't make it to the final two, but rap always bombs in Eurovision anyway. At least we'd have made the mistake of being too cool for Eurovision.

I have no idea why people are still missing all those languages in Eurovision. At least now, you can get a general idea of the song during the broadcast, which is better. As for me, I'm not a fan of languages. I'm quite tired of them and my big wish for future generations is to speak one language. I'll give them 1000 years for a complete dominance of English. Yessssssssss...

Eurovision was started a bit for fun, like "Let's make a competition and find the song, which Europe can enjoy during the summer". Great idea! Pity that I can't bet this year since I'm sitting in a hole where betting civilization didn't fully reach yet. :bebebe:

Singing a song in English in Eurovision isn't the same as giving up your national culture. France will remain French even after performing a Eurovision song partly in English. God help us if Eurovision represents European culture anyway.

It's going to get slaughtered. That sort of entry is incredibly old and unimaginative. It's like the British public hasn't actually watched Eurovision since about 1990, still less in the last few years. Entries like that don't do well these days. And this year is insanely competitive after Lordi has liberated people to try something different. As a joke entry, it can't compare with Switzerland. As a camp entry it can't compare with Sweden. As a piece of pop music it can't compare with Russia. Why should anyone vote for it? It joins the crap entries that lots of other countries are putting forward, but unlike most of them we can't rely on friendly neighbours to give us some sympathy votes.

Both my parents were graduate linguists: my mother in French and Spanish, my father in French, German and Russian. He went to Spain for a year and became fluent in Spanish too. They both later regretted it, said they wished they studied something more useful and strongly advised me against studying languages. And my father was a professor of languages! It really discouraged me working on them, although I can speak a little bit of French I learned at school.

The only foreign language that's particularly useful for an English speaker is Spanish - it's the only one I wish I could speak. French is okay because it's understood in a lot of places. Russian is of very limited use. German is pointless because most Germans speak English quite well.

I married a Romanian who'd studied English and French at university because she was an extremely talented linguist. She also came to the conclusion that being a linguist was of little use even though she was so good at it. She said you need to be able to speak English, but you also need to be able to do something else. She decided to become a psychologist instead.

In the last four years it's been all about the performance of the song, rather than the song itself - and the year before that in 2002 it was all about the performance on stage with Marie N doing a lesbian kiss and a striptease.:p Maybe Russia will do something similar this year.

The one that we can see already has a performance to win with is Sweden. Maybe Turkey or Bulgaria can step up their performance (as Ruslana did compared to what her pre-contest video was like). At the moment, I think Sweden's the one to beat. It's a tongue in cheek entry like Lordi's.

Not sure about that. The Ark have a very strong stage presence and a huge experience of live singing (at least 6 years of continuous touring) but there are better songs and I'm sure some of them will be performed strongly.

Have not seen Sweden yet but I've seen the UK and it's really horrible...if that is the idea of having a stage act to win Eurovision then I know nothing.
Song's rubbish too ( so it might get points from muppets in other countries who vote just for kicks ).
Though it deserves the classic nil points UK are accustomed too lately.

ok, I've seen Sweden, another case of plagiarism from the glam era. What's the name of the song they're copying from?
Edison Lighthouse: - Love Grows ( Where My rosemarry Goes ), same exact notes.

Pathetic - and so obvious. It would be a shame to win Eurovision with this type of old-fashioned song. Lordi's song had unique elements, Sweden is just a bad copy - can't win.

ps: I received some spam from Elitsa Todorova ( is it really her email ? lol ) who requested that I go to a site and vote for their song :p
I think they tracked my email when I visited her website
You can send her your spam - or to whoever sent that email - to lolazaza@abv.bg

Oh the site to vote is http://www.escforever.com/charts.html
At the moment the first three on that site are Cyprus, Greece and Bulgaria. It'd be cool if either Cyprus or Bulgaria won - instead of any of the other muppets with "a show" for a change but it probably won't happen.
Cyrpus should be the fav with the bookies but at the moment it is Sweden - which makes no sense but anyhow.

top 5:

1. Sweden
2. Russia
3. Switzerland
4. Ukraine
5. United Kingdom

It seems like those odds were made according to whoever has the most BS happening on stage - who cares about songs now. I'm hoping that the odds will change as people get more informed of the trends. Ukraine must be the most ridiculous of all, it seems. Is that really a song?? :p

forre why so neutral all of a sudden? I mean there are some really crappy songs this year but you always find something nice to say about everybody :p
For me it's possibly Romania and Israel to win the war of the jokers....but there are so many this year and it's not funny anymore.

Oh Russia, have they really approved these lyrics? lol
The song is wicked, I love it. Haven't seen the performance but how could they go wrong , lol
A song with modern sound that works, not some lousy retro nonsense. Kinda like Girls Aloud but with more bite and attitude. Didn't I say that Russia are taking Eurovision seriously? Their time is coming soon...

It's funny this year there are quite a few good songs around so the bad ones really seem badder :p

We see what happens, but Russia, Bulgaria, Switzerland and Cyprus should cruise from the semi to the final.

ok, I've seen Sweden, another case of plagiarism from the glam era. What's the name of the song they're copying from?
Edison Lighthouse: - Love Grows ( Where My rosemarry Goes ), same exact notes.
I have the same opinion. It's a ripoff. I wonder if the case will be taken up at EBU. I know that Swedish press have discussed it.

Nice songs don't win Eurovision and there's no point for me to even think if the entry is good or not because tastes are different. It's more of a game for me each year trying to predict the winner.

It's a rip off but now that I listened to it again, it's not all that bad. The thing is, a band that has a stage presence that reminds of those slease rock n' roll bands of the 80s but has a song straight from the 70's can really win Eurovision?
The history of the last few years of the contest has proved that it can't.
It's such a fine line between providing a fresh take on a popular style and simply copying that popular style. The Ark are doing the latter...
Nice songs don't win Eurovision and there's no point for me to even think if the entry is good or not because tastes are different. It's more of a game for me each year trying to predict the winner.

You're right as last year's Romania and Sweden who had the best songs didn't win. Not that Lordi's was bad.
Winning Eurovision aside, which ones do you like? I like Cyprus, Bulgaria, Turkey, Russia, Switzerland, Iceland aand I need to listen to some a bit more because there is potential in other songs too.

I think it's a bit pointless to judge based on the performance, those videos are low quality and the performances can change on the night. So the first port of call are the songs themselves...I'm against turning the song contest into a parade of kitsch as some are trying to do this year. It's still a song contest , never mind the "visual" aspect of it.

PS Poor ballads have been slaughtered this year, is there any other ballad except Iceland's? you can't have a "performance" with a ballad, so nobody wants to sing them anymore...what a shame :(
I still remember that guy from Norway with the piano in 2003, what a beautiful song...but it only managed 4th.

I didn't find Sweden's song any good at all. Sweden repeated themselves (and Carola disgusts me... not that it matters tho. Hehehe). I guess Romania's song was a nice one. Not quite my style, but the melody was super catchy... and it was popular too, just like Sweden's. They recieved alotta votes. But imo Lordi's song was by far the nicest, and also far from the best Lordi have made :)
I still remember that guy from Norway with the piano in 2003, what a beautiful song...but it only managed 4th.
But wasn't it a little fast to be classified as a true ballad? But it was a calm and okay song indeed. Hmmm.... I'm trying to remember how it went. That guy had the worst english accent tho

Absolutely agree,it was so much over-rated in the show.I think last year Romania had the best song and i did vote for the very first time in this televoting era for them.I dont think i will vote for any countries, but of course i can change my opinion as some of the songs get better in performance.

I think after this year they might take a U-turn and realise the contest is getting into a joke, so we might see a more traditional approach next year. Yes, I know it is a joke but there are also those who take it seriously :p
I think the whole thing will backclash this year. ( I'm talking about the Ukraine/Israel/Romania/France/UK/Denmark trend... am I forgetting someone?
Sweden always repeat themselves or ridiculously rip-off some style and I don't like Carola either but I think the song itself was very good, the fact that it was Carola who sung it doesn't change it dradeel.

But wasn't it a little fast to be classified as a true ballad? But it was a calm and okay song indeed. Hmmm.... I'm trying to remember how it went. That guy had the worst english accent tho

Are you sure we're talking about the same song? I'm talking about this one Jostein Hassegaard - I'm Not Afraid To Move On (http://rapidshare.com/files/21981718/Jostein_Hassegaard_-_I_m_Not_Afraid_To_Move_On__Norway_.mp3.html). That's classified as a true ballad to me.
Oh the next year -2004- I remember Cyprus had the best ballad.

Anyways, ballads are no good. I always yawn when they play the ballads. Agh... The age of Eurovision-ballads are over for now imo, but they might return..?

I disagree, like in all kinds of music there is good and bad, so there are good ballads and bad ballads. I'm not particularly fond of ballads either but I don't want them to disappear completely in favor of some prank songs.

In retrospect, there wasn't much good about Setrab's and Ruslana's songs , they were weak and a bit embarassing in my opinion to listen to today, and not original in the least - Sertab's was a poor woman's Turkish Shakira and Ruslana's song weak and her voice is irritating. Those songs without the "drama" of the performances are nothing...oh wait, Greece was no good either but great performance...and finally, I think the most classic example is Marie Naumova from 2002 - that was 95% performance 05% song - what song? :p
We did like the performances on the night but hey, you can't change the fact that the songs were not very good.

So The Ark is contemporary? Are you kidding me? Carola's song was more from the 90's than the 80s imo the 80's was all electronic pop and heavy metal The song the kind of Carola's used to triumph in Eurovision ( remember Katrina and The Waves? )
The Ark's style used to be good in 1971 ( have you ever heard of T-Rex, Edison Lighthouse, they like them so much so they decided to rip them off. )
They didn't add anything new, they just copy them. so if they win it will be about the performance again... so the guy takes off his shirt big deal. He's not even attractive :p

About Carola winning last years swedish selections I kind of felt the same, haven't we sent her to ESC enough times already? And the wind in the hair - yes, I had a laugh at that too. She did the wind in the hair thing when she won in 1991 (I think) with a song (Fångad av en stormvind, "captured by a stormwind") in similar style to last years, so yes, it was quite surprising to see she did it again. Or perhaps that was the point, scoring votes for nostalgic reasons.

When it somes to The Ark you will be horrified to know it was by far the best song in this years swedish final. It was bad this year.

Yeah... 91 is correct. And yeah, the same wind-thing. Hehe. She has done that wind-machine thingie a bunch of times in music vids and stuff too. Even when performing the song on norwegian television she was singing with no extras on stage ... except the wind machine. She was made fun of because of it. But the wind in hair is classiic camp, no matter how many times you do it can't get enough of it :p
wind machine is like big hairdos, extravagantly tasteless clothes, dodgy machine drums, etc.
Carola really though she was gonna win with all that.
ok, maybe if I listen to the Ark about 50 times and forget everything I know I'll like it. won't be doing it though, there are better songs around.

Hey, dradeel you liked Norway's 2003 entry or was it too quiet for you?

I think we are going to have fun this year at Eurovision with so many bizarre entries and performances. Yeah!

Yeah, it's gonna be interesting, you really don't know what to expect this year, unlike the previous two. I doubt we'll have a clear favourite beforehand and if there is one, it won't win. Will be unpredictable this year. We have such an insane mix of different songs and styles.
I'm sensing Turkey might be an early fav, the song is actually better than Sertab's when she won and it's got the same touch of cheese with a contemporary sound and Turkey always give attention to the performance, so it could go far...other than that, I don't know, I still like Cyprus and Bulgaria' songs very much but I doubt they'll be favs because they're "small" Eurovision countries. But so was Greece and Turkey a few years back and now they're massive. You always start from somewhere. There's gonna be stiff competition this year but I believe the title will rightly and hopefully stay in the East. the Eastern alliance is just too strong :p
And I've prepared myself of watching some untalented muppet who shakes it well on stage beating all competition...wouldn't be the first time and it won't be last.

I remember I was struggling to find 1 or 2 songs to like in the past but this year I like at least half a dozen. So that means it's getting better ( at least for me ).

Hmmm... "I'm nooot afraid to mooove on". Not the worst song, no. Actually, that year I think that was my fav from the Norwegian finals. I guess it was in 2004 that I was a little pissed (with reasons), but oh well... Hehe.
The bad thing about Jostein Hasselgård (or what his name was, I think I'm right tho. the dude in 2003 anyways) was the awful english accent. Hehehe. Other than that it was okay. A little too ballad-ish for my taste I guess, but not too bad at all.

So do we want a retro Eurovision or a Eurovision with contemporary music, or a Eurovision with kitsch songs? I think people need to decide but coolasfcuk doesn't seem to be happy no matter what happens, you're always complaining cool :p

the Balkan song is old
the ballad is dead
rock is so "monstrous"
those contemporary bands we don't need in Eurovision, they're changing the tradition.
the kitsch songs are just kitsch

Well decide what we want people! Maybe next trend will be arias and operettas.
And for those who say the Swedes will win , well if they do, I'll eat my ravoili.

hmm, Russia's song will be a wake-up call for Britain if it does well, other countries getting kudos with British style of contemporary pop now.
If that isn't a wake up call for them nothing will be.

ok, this year, I'll be voting for Bulgaria, Cyprus and Russia..songs rock, in fact they're actually better than anything in ESC 2006 or 2005. Everyone of them is a bold decision. I also like Turkey but I won't be voting for them. They're genna get the points anyway, it's not as bold a song, they're treading on explored and succesful territory already.

well, video is good, but then you listen to them sing live and  here you have to scroll to the end of the video to hear them sing a little: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-W7irX5WUkw&NR=1 oh la laaaaaaaaaaa .... i like their attitude during the interview and the main girl is really charming. :) .. oh and they said the Eurovision performance will be their first concert, so .... that isnt that great! oh and for those who do noto understand Russian: the blondie paints, the main one doesnt have any hobbies, she just :lives: and the one in the green shirt is sporty .... and then they try to say they arent manufactured, pleaaaaaase

Kris, they actually said nothing about them being manufactured or not. It was the host that said as far as he knows, the band was created rather randomly without special castings and stuff and Lena just said 'I met Fadeev 4 years ago, we were working together and now u can see this band as a result of this all'. With everything I saw and heard about Temnikova and other girls before, looks like it happened this way:

Lena was born and grew up in some far russian city Kurgan (Fadeev comes from there as well). She was quite an 'interesing' kid: got proper music education, was proclaimed 'the master of singing of Kurgan' at the age of 17 but at the same time was quite wild and was in police papers as a 'young hooligan'. Then she went to Moscow in hope to get into one of the universities here but heard about the casting for Star Factory and jumped in the project in the last moment.

She didn't have it easy in the project as she was her wild-self and 'teahers' didn't really like it. Like when they found she's eating too much and scary voice from above said 'Temnikova, stop eating like a pig!', she came up with her famous rap 'Imagie is nothing. Food is everything. Temnikova, don't let yourself to get thin. Yo!' or was grabbing the biggest box of food she could find and run around the house mocking that 'scary voice' of producing team. They kept nominating her for being 'kicked out' but audience kept saving her, so she made it to the end and came 3rd with 2 good vocalists (and much less problematic ones) higher than her.

After the project ended, Max didn't know what to do with her but insisted she stays in Moscow and provided her some job to make living with. She did tour whole country as a part of SF project (talking about performing experience), probably did some other singing-related job for producing center, took part in Last Hero show (where they send people to the Island without food and stuff). And at the same time they were trying to come up with the idea for her solo career. But at some point Max came up with Serebro name and decided another couple of girls would be a great help there.

Olga (sporty brunette) was on the same concert tour. She's a professional ballroom dancer (cha-cha-cha and shit) and she was doung backing dancing and vocals for Irakli (guy from same Star Factory who got quite popular here). That's where Lena met her, made a video with her cell-phone and showed to Fadeev thinking it would be a good choice for the band.

Marina (the blond) read about the new project being formed in the Internet and sent her photos. She got invited to producing center but they said she had to come vith a video of her singing. She said 'ok', went out of the room, recorded herself with the cell-phone cam and left it on reception. Later she called her own number and Fadeev said 'they can try'.

So one was there from the start, another one was found by the first one and third showed up with the help of internet. Not the case where people play in the same band from school years but at the same time not your usual casting. They admitted they all found each other rather bitchy from the first sight but then got along pretty well and now wouldn't want anyone else being in the band.

Here's my top 10 from the semi(the ones i want them to qualify-in no specific order)

Belarus
Turkey
Andora
Moldova
Bulgaria
Georgia
Iceland
Estonia
Czech Rep.
Cyprus

Despite being among the favourites to win the contest,i dont like Switzerland and Serbia much. But its very likely that they will qualify from the semi. After i see the dress rehearsals,i can take a prediction to who will make it to the final. So everyone, post your predictions!

My favorites are Macedonia, Greece, Croatia and maybe England. But I didn't hear a lot of song so I can't tell you for sure.

I know that Serbia's representor is freaking ugly and you get scared when you see her, but she has really good voice and for me the song "Molitva" is quite good.
However, I can't "prognose" what's gonna happend, but I think we'll certanly get to final.

Second dress rehearsals finished and here are some some comments on the performances.I'm quite surprised.

Bulgaria - Absolutely excellent beginning . This went down a storm in the hall. Great vocals

Israel - A few changes to the backdrop but no major changes to be honest. the main change seems to be the addition of a rolling set of countries on a map. The camera work when looking at the screen in the arena seems to be the manic camera work that was in the Israeli Final/preview so this is what the Israeli delegation wanted. Reaction was ok in the hall, but less positive than Bulgaria

Cyprus - Evridiki is getting better with each performance in my opinion. This was an excellent performance and this also went down well in the hall.

Belarus - Again, a good performance by Koldun and a great reaction, but surprisingly, the reaction for Cyprus semed to be better.

Iceland - Good performance and an average reaction in the hall

Georgia - The dancers are in grey and this was also a good rehearsal except So´pho's vocal in a few places was a bit shouty which was not the best. A decent reaction from the audience.

The presenters then welcome Georgia and Czech Republic to the show by saying hello to them in their languages.

Montenegro - Stepen looks like he left his pajama trousers on , his vocals were good as was the performance. The reaction was ok.

Switzerland - This was a very polished performance from DJ Bobo, the vocals were the best of the week. I still think that it lacked something but it got a good reaction.

Moldova - Excellent performance, great vocal and also a great reaction.

The Netherlands - Well, Edsilia knows how to see her song. This was an amazing performance. the song is still not strong but the perfoance is lifting this up my ranking. Crown loved it in the hall.

Albania - A nice perfomance , female backing singer in a gold dress, good vocals but a quiet reaction at the end from the audience

Denmark - fabulous performnance from Denmark except for DQ's vocals at many of the high parts of the song which he will need to sort out. Crowd loved it. Red dress used and a final costume change near the end of the song.

Croatia - Good performance from Croatia but , without doubt, the quietest crowd reaction to any country in the semi today.

Poland - I thought this was a good peformance but the crowd reaction was only ok for this one.

Serbia - Vocally brilliant but presentation has got worse. She walks on stage with her hand in her pocket and this looks really bad to me. It is a great song and the crowd reaction was really good but it did not bring the house down.

Czech Republic - A good performance of the song from Kabat and an average crowd reaction

Portugal - Now, this was performed well by Sabrina and it got a good response from the crowd.

FYR Macedonia - Good performance, backing singers on chairs looks bad to me though. Average crowd response

Norway - A great performance from Guri which got one of the best responses from the audience.

Malta - One of the best visual presentations of the semi and a great performance with a really good crowd reaction. Really want to see how it comes across on camera though.

Andorra - Excellent performance and excellent crowd reaction. If this does not qualify I will be so surprised.

Hungary - Now I love this song but I'm not sure if the Bus Stop on stage is a good idea. An excellent performance which got a good crowd response but maybe not a wide enough appeal to get enough votes?

Estonia - Another good performance with an average crowd response.

Belgium - Now, this has also gone up for me. Great performance and a great crowd reaction.

Slovenia - This was a good performance but I'd say she was holding back this afternoon. Personally, I think that the dress is awful but the vocal was great and the crowd reaction was really good.

Turkey - Loved this. This has jumped up for me as well. A really excellent performance from Kenan and the crowd in te hall loved it also.

Austria - Now , the presentation and performance for Austria was also excellent , much improved on anything that they have done so far this week but the crowd reaction was average.

Latvia - Best crowd reaction of the night (closely followed by Bulgaria). Vocally and visually strong. this would be another surpise if it didn't qualify
